Dance Will Aid Accident Victim Benefit Will Be Held At Concordia Saturday For Joe Wilson Misfortune stalked into the home of Joe Wilson, Santa Ana photographer and motion picture operator, during the early morning hours of March 30, but on next Saturday evening a silver lining will be weaved into the cloud. On that evening a benefit dance will be held in the Concordia club here through the combined efforts of photographers, motion picture operators, members of the Anaheim Young Ladies' Institute and numerous friends of the crippled man. Wilson is confined to his bed in St. Joseph's hospital, suffering from injuries received in an automobile accident March 30. How long he will have to remain there is not known yet. Known throughout the county, his many friends banded together recently and planned the dance to be held Saturday evening, proceeds from which will be used to defray Wilson's expenses. Music for the dance will be supplied by Frank Neimann's popular orchestra. Other entertainment also planned, it was declared by Robert LaMori of Anaheim who is heading the group arranging details of the benefit. The winners of this competition will be sent to the national event at Akron, Ohio, to compete against boy champions from practically every state in the union and from Hawaii, Mexico, Canada, and South Africa. The All-American Soap Box Derby took form in the mind of Myron E. Scott, a newspaper photographer in Dayton, Ohio, early in 1933 when he came across a group of young boys scooting down a Dayton hill in home-made miniature automobiles. Scott took a few minutes off from his assignment to watch the fun, and the eagerness and enthusiasm of the youngsters fired his imagination. He went back to his office and sold his managing editor the idea of sponsoring a L. W. BLODGET and THOMAS H. The event attracted wide interest in Dayton and surrounding cities. Its popularity convinced Scott of the possibilities of a Soap Box Derby on a national scale. It took his idea to Chevrolet, whose officials were immediately interested. The event has been held annually since then and interest is growing. Approximately 45,000 spectators gathered at the track to watch the miniature racers. Robert Turner, of Munice, Indiana, won first place and a $2,000 university scholarship offered by Chevrolet. One of the greatest crowds in the history of amateur sport is expected to be on hand for the running of All-American and International Soap Box Derby races on August 15 this year.
