Railway Express Agency Ready To Deliver Packages Promptly Anticipating a season of holiday buying, this year, that will outstrip all previous records, agents and employees of the Railway Express agency are now making preparations for the rapid movement and expeditious handling of a huge volume of gift shipments. With 50,000 employees stationed in more than 22,000 cities and towns, in contact with the public at their offices and in their homes express service has become an increasingly important medium in the distribution of Christmas packages. Despite pleas to "Shop early and ship early" many families hold off until ten days before Christmas Day before getting holiday gift shipments on their way. During this extremely short period, the peak of this family-to-family business is reached, at a time when the commercial traffic is also running at high tide. But the expressmen take this situation in their stride, since express appeared to fast transportation by passenger train and plane, with collection at the shipping point and delivery at destination. In order that no family will be disappointed because of tardy arrival, deliveries of holiday packages sent by express will be made even on Christmas Day. Thus, in every city, even though gift shipments do not arrive until Christmas morning, the expressmen will bring them to the home to which they are addressed, before the day is over. To assist senders of such packages, special holiday address labels can now be obtained at any Railway Express agency office. Sending shipments by this modern system is a simple matter. A telephone call to any nearby Railway Express office will start an express vehicle to call for them. If more convenient, a telephone call to Western Union will bring a messenger to pick up the express packages and start them on their way to any destination, without additional charge. For those who wait until the last moment, there is the Air Express service to make up for lost time. Through this high speed facility of Railway Express, packages turned over to it as late as Christmas Eve, can be sent overnight to destinations even 2000 miles away, with delivery on the day itself practically assured. California Citrus Growers and Farmers Hear Report by Brock Reporting to the sixty-ninth convention of California Fruit Growers and Farmers at Bakersfield 1937 session of the legislature to correct or amend existing farm laws. This department has adopted California Citrus Growers and Farmers Hear Report by Brock Reporting to the sixty-ninth convention of California Fruit Growers and Farmers at Bakersfield Monday, State Director of Agriculture A. A. Brock indicated that the gross income of California agricultural producers in 1936 will probably be about $600,000,000, the most since the depression and one of the best years for agriculture in the history of the state. The director indicated that the gross and cash incomes of California farmers have shown substantial increases every year since 1932. Directing his attention to the accomplishments of the state department of agriculture in meeting the many perplexing problems of agriculture in 1936, Director Brock indicated that no doubt there will be many attempts made in the 1937 session of the legislature to correct or amend existing farm laws. "This department has adopted the policy of not sponsoring or initiating bills regulating the industry," he said. "We believe that agriculture is well represented through able leaders and that the industry is competent to propose needed legislation for the purpose of improving conditions. The director devoted considerable of his report to the enforcement and operation of new agricultural marketing laws. He also reviewed the progress made by the department, in cooperation with the federal government, looking to the control of bovine tuberculosis. He also cited the progress made efforts to eradicate the citrus fly, saying that in Orange county no white fly has been and for two years. Brock also declared that tinkering with California's plant quarantine laws so that they will continue more to the ideas of tourists visiting the state might prevent the state from doing a thorough job of protecting agriculture from new insect pests and plant diseases and the money spent for that purpose might be wasted and new plant pests could more readily be brought into the state making additional burdens for the farms of the state to contend with.
