MUCH RUBBER USED More than 885 million pounds of crude rubber were consumed by the motor vehicle industry in the United States last year, it is reported to the Automobile Club of Southern California. FLASH! FLASH! Lose Ugly Fat "Eat sensibly and drink Welch's Grape Juice," says Irene Rich WILL you do only two pleasant things to get rid of your ugly fat? First, eat sensibly. Second, mix 1/4 of a glass of Welch's Grape Juice with 1/4 of a glass of water and drink before meals, and at bedtime. No strict dieting, exercising, or taking drugs. Yet!—weight losses of 7 pounds a month have been credited to this Save method. Use only Welch's—made from the finest grapes grown; always full strength. Certified Pure. Welch GRAPE JUICE Dons To Tangle With Freshmen The junior college gridiron spotlight in Orange county will be turned on Santa Ana's municipal bowl tomorrow night when Coach Bill Cook's Santa Ana Dons face the U. C. L. A. frosh in a non-conference engagement. Fullerton jayssee journeys to San Bernardino in a league fray with high hopes of gaining its first victory. The Dons walloped San Bernardino last Friday evening, 47 to 0, while Coach Al Clayes' Citrus Owls were taking advantage of Fullerton's miscues to roll up an 18 to 7 victory. The Hornets outgained Citrus by a wide margin, made 16 first downs to 6, but ended on the short end of the count by strategy that backfired three times. Santa Ana is facing its toughest opponent of the year in the Bruin frosh, who last Saturday turned back the Stanford pea-greeners. Kenny Washington, negro halfback, is the ball-carrying star of the California squad. LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP If those guys go monkeying with the stream flow up the Santa Ana river some of the folks are wondering what would happen to the city of Anaheim's water supply. JAMES H. Smart Orange county Republican, political managers and observers will admit in back rooms or in whispers that Governor Landon is a mighty ineffective campaign speaker, but they are insisting the visit of their Presidential candidate to California has raised a hope he may actually carry California. Professional politicians say the average person can never be made to realize how many voters like to "play a winner." It was for this vote the G. O. P. high command was angling when it sent the candidate to Los Angeles. And some Orange county observers are insisting the strategem worked. They say this incredibly large class of voters whose wish to vote for a winner is paramount to all other considerations is reasoning Governor Landon would not have come to California if he thought there was a pretty good chance of winning the vote of the state and this has helped to turn the tide in Landon's favor. These same Orange county Republicans say that early in the campaign the National committee had so thoroughly given up California as lost to the New Deal that California committees could not even get any literature from Chicago for distribution in this state, to say nothing of prominent speakers or money. Recent studies have changed the National committees attitude sufficiently to make campaign literature available, and more recently both the Presidential and vice-Presidential candidates have visited the state. But the G.O.P. managers add, Chicago headquarters hasn't yet become hopeful enough to put any money into the fight. So far the campaign in California has been conducted almost exclusively on California money. The contests in both the First and Third Supervisorial district have generated enough heat late-ly to incubate whispering campaigns. COLLINS TO CONGRESS CITRUS GROWER RANCHER ATTORNEY Two terms as Congressman places him in a position of seniority that will be of value in serving the people of this district. He advocates tariffs to preserve American markets for American farmers and adjustment of tariff restrictions to develop and maintain foreign markets for farm surpluses. Election Tuesday, November 3 COLLINS FOR CONGRESS COMMITTEE All Right, Mr. Riley, Here Are The Answers 1. The tax collector is sole authority for mailing tax bills. Nov. 1 is the date set. If tax bills are higher in some districts it is because of local taxes, not county taxes. Could you as a supervisor reduce school taxes? 2. The per capita cost of government is lower as it applies to items controlled by the supervisors. The records prove it. What items would you cut in order to further reduce county taxes? 3. No such statement was made. Mr. Lyon helped appoint the county librarian and the head of the juvenile home—both women. 4. No. That would mean $6,000 a week. Most of the few people working are contributing their time. Are your's all working for nothing? 5. Most contributions to this campaign have come in small amounts from people who joined the Good Government League, of which L. P. Nichols is president and Frank Tausch secretary. Who has contributed to your campaign and of whom is the Riley-for-Supervisor club composed? 6. Absolutely no promises of any kind have been made to any... 5. The contract for this road oil was let to the lowest bidder by the purchasing department and as delivered is checked by the road department. The law specifies that contracts go to the lowest bidder.
