Sportsmen of California Spend Millions Yearly, Survey Shows
The results of a statewide survey determine annual expenditure of California sportsmen are public by the Fish & Game Department association, state wildlife conservation body, with its president, Carl F. Johnson. Conducted over a four-year period and in each of the counties of the state, the surveys that more than $63,000 was spent in California in 1935 by anglers and hunters based on total license sales of at least less than 400,000 sk-down of figures reveals that sportsmen spent $16,916,215 for lures and wearing apparel; approximately $10,500,000 for mobile transportation costs piling up the surprising total age of 316,000,000 miles. Sportsmen travelled another 11 million miles by airplane, boat, train.
Hotels, inns, resorts and camps lived a total of $11,248,323 in the sportman, while the fishing goods dealer sold $24,-203 worth of firearms, rods, lee, ammunition and similar equipment. Dealers in automobile accessories and repairs reed approximately $10,000,000 their share of the 'melon' disrupted by the sportsmen.
fishermen and the hunters of California have a total investment $128,984,728 in equipment. Evangelist in the state spent on average of $116.80 last year, be the hunter, for the sameod of time, spent $115.58. The angler spends $1.22 every year more than does the hunter.
Last year 235,000 license holders bought both hunting and angling licenses, or 58% of the total licenses sold. The ratio between hunting and fishing licenses purchased is 56.3% for fishing and 43.7% for hunting.
Hunting and fishing clubs have an average investment in land and equipment of $36,995, while annual expenditures of both types of clubs is $2,495. The fishing clubs spend on the average of $1,573 each year for operating expenses and the hunting club $2,906.
In summarizing the results of the survey, Johnson had this to say:
"The Fish & Game Development association makes a major contribution to the state of California as a whole in the completion of this survey. As far as is known these reports are the most accurate, comprehensive and painstaking ever compiled. The original cross-section of names was fairly made and selected at random and individual returns, compared one with another, show a fairly even expenditure for a large and widely separated group of men; after making any reasonable allowance or adjustment for any cause, the grand totals still present an astonishing and incredible estimate of the value of the sport angling and hunting industry to the state of California.
"Fishing and hunting by the sportsman rank as one of the

state's greatest industries and distributors of money, and they take their place among the four leading industries of California in annual financial return. From this report it is obvious that the betterment of hunting and fishing conditions automatically increases the number of license purchasers and in like ratio increases the expenditures by sportsmen.
With a total of approximately one-half million license sales—an approximate increase of 25% over the number the above figures are based upon—the annual total expenditure will in like ratio be increased approximately 25%. Indications are that during 1936, more than one-half million licenses will be sold in the state, which means that approximately $80,000,000 will be expended this year in California by hunters and anglers."
All compilations were made by one of the national agencies, it is pointed out by Association officers.

Acts and Facts of Townsendism
By Walter R. Robb
(This is a non-political, non-partisan column dealing in Townsend news and views, and written by a prominent Townsend leader. Any opinions which are expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Gazette).
The acts and facts of Townsendism are of interest to all the world today. The Townsend plan when presented two and one half years ago by Dr. Francis E. Townsend of Long Beach, was a new adventure in economic thought. Its theories of economic practice were so revolutionary and different from what was being advocated by the accredited economists as to be startling.

language in which it was present-
ed was at once so simple and yet so profound with new thought that it resulted in the capturing the interest of economists, journalistic writers and that of the common people almost immediately. Like a prairie fire, that starts with a single small flame, but spreads with rapidity over the countryside, so the thought of Townsendism swept over the state of California and across the nation. Almost overnight, the before unknown Dr. Townsend became an important personage. Today his daily mail includes letters from all over the world.
It is not astonishing therefore, that the editor of this paper concluded to give opportunity to its readers to read of the acts and facts of so interesting and importa-tive a movement as Townsendism has turned out to be. Any idea, newly created, which demonstrates so great a power in so short a period over the thought and aspirations of a great people as has the Townsend plan, is surely worthy of being presented truthfully, honestly, and accurately, to the attention of the readers of any paper, be it great or small. The editor of your paper has so concluded, and arrangements have been made, whereby the writer will present to your consideration from week to week, the acts and facts of Townsendism, which he considers to be of especial interest. The news presented in this column will include happenings both local and national, so that the interests of all its readers may be served.
The material used in this column will be selected with the idea in view of presenting in clear and concise manner the theories of Townsendism and the probable effect the application of its truths would have on the business interests and occupational pursuits common among the readers of this column. The writer was an early believer in the Townsend philosophy of economics and is qualified to present with sincerity the truths of the Townsend plan. His experience as a Townsend organizer, Townsend speakers' bureau manager and Townsend speaker during the last two and one half years enables him to write accurately and with the slant of a believer, the acts and facts of the Townsend movement and its leaders.
He recognizes that the Townsend plan when enacted into the law of the land, must give proof through its workings of being beneficial to the life of the people in general. Otherwise it will not remain upon the books of the nation as permanent legislation. Those of an age who will remain among the employed of the nation, must be accorded benefits that will be on a par with those received by the Townsend annuitants or it will not give satisfaction. It must result in the absorption of the now unemployed into the business and agricultural life of the nation, and at wages sufficiently large that the new high standard of living contemplated can be enjoyed by this present unfortunate class, along with the rest of society. It must destroy the present inability, prevalent at this time among business concerns to realize proper and adequate profits from their business ventures including legitimate interest returns from capital invested. It must give to agriculture a like opportunity to that suggested for business concerns. Profits must be realized by those engaged in agricultural production, which will enable them to compete in the markets with industrial concerns for the services of labor necessary to carry on the work of their fields. All this and much more, must be and will be,
