Vords of Appreciation:
I desire to express my appreciation to my many friends and supporters and to the Newspapers of Orange County for the endorsement given me in my candidacy or state senator.
Such a testimonial of confidence impresses upon me more than ever the responsibility that will rest upon me should I be eventually successful.
Yours sincerely,
THOMAS L. McFADDEN.

UNITS BUILT HERE SENT TO WENATCHEE
One of the complete, all-metal Brogdex machines just shipped to Wenatchee, Wash., by the Brogde company of Pomona, for use in processing apples, is shown at top. In this machine, about 14 feet long, apples will be treated to reduced scald, decay and shrinkage and to maintain crispness, fresh flavor and juice content. The washing section is the long portion on the right; center section is for rinsing, and the waxing section is at the left. Lower photo shows one of the units being loaded into a freight car on the Southern Pacific's spur track near Garcy avenue.
SERIES STARTS TODAY ON STATE MOTOR VEHICLE CODE SUMMARY
Beginning today the Gazette will publish each week a portion of the summary of the California Motor Vehicle code. The purpose of this series is to aid drivers of automobiles to do their share in reducing the death and casualty rate on the highways. Editors note.
"The automobile you drive can become an instrument of death. Whether or not it does so depends on you. More damage can be caused by your car in 10 secs."
Each of the wax applicators being sent to Wenatchee has a capacity of 250 to 400 boxes, or bushels, an hour.
The company has opened a laboratory and warehouse at Wenatchee, but all of the equipment is being manufactured in Pomona. Ten men are being sent from Pomona to install and operate the machines.
Wenatchee is to be headquarters for the states of Washington, Oregon and Idaho, Northern California and Southern British Columbia.
The company is continuing its research work with the idea of making the Brogdex process applicable and practical for other fruits as well as vegetables, including tomatoes and canaloupes. Experimentation is constantly under way in the main laboratory in Pomona.

Processing of more than 1,000-000 boxes of apples in the Pacific Northwest this year by the Brogdex company of Pomona was in prospect today, following shipment of four complete units of Brogdex company machines to Wenatchee, Wash., as a part of the equipment to be sent there for inauguration of the Brogdex process in the gigantic apple industry. All equipment is manufactured in Pomona.
The shipments mark beginning of another major development by the Brogdex company, which has its general offices, shops and main laboratory in Pomona. Four more complete Brogdex units are to be shipped within a few days to supplement the first machines, in processing apples to reestablish superiority of this Northwestern grown fruit.
The units shipped to Wenatchee, which will be headquarters for the Northwest, are from three to five feet in width and are about 14 feet long. The units are combination flood-type brushing machines designed especially for processing apples. They will wash, rinse and wax the fruit, the thin coating of wax, as tests have shown, materially reducing scald, decay and shrinkage of apples so they can be more profitably marketed.
Exhaustive Tests Made.
Exhaustive tests in processing of apples were made last year by the Brogdex company, resulting in the development of a washing machine, utilizing a sodium silicate or sodium hydroxide solution for removing the residue left from use of poisonous sprays, without injury to the skin of the fruit. A combination silicate and acid wash has been used to remove that by use of the new principle of brushing in the majority of cases the silicate solution alone is sufficient to remove the spray Borax principles used in

the Brogdex company, resulting in the development of a washing machine, utilizing a sodium silicate or sodium hydroxide solution for removing the residue left from use of poisonous sprays, without injury to the skin of the fruit. A combination silicate and acid wash has been used to remove that by use of the new principle of brushing in the majority of cases the silicate solution alone is sufficient to remove the spray residue. Basic principles used in cleaning oranges were followed in designing machines for washing, rinsing and waxing apples.
The Brogdex company entered the Northwest field, conducting complete demonstrations on a large scale with intention of proving or disproving the following points as to the value of wax on apples:
Value of Wax Shown
Scald control without use of oil wraps, brighter appearance of fruit so it would be fresh and attractive in dealer displays, and partial sealing of the apple to check evaporation, to check loss of flavor, to retard ripening and development of mealy condition, and to slow up internal breakdown.
Tests showed on Jonathan apples that the Brogdex wax reduced scald from approximately 25 per cent to 8.38 per cent; decay, from 6.16 per cent to 5.13; shrinkage, from 2.22 per cent to 1.50. On Delicious apples the decay was reduced from 6.15 per cent to 3.77. Other varieties also were in better condition as a result of the waxing process.
Many individual tests were made to ascertain whether or not the wax treatment had any effect, good or bad, on flavor of the fruit.
Helps Retain Flavor
These tests were made with De-
hicle Code Sec. 252).
A nonresident over the age of twenty-one years having in his immediate possession a valid chauffeur's license may operate a motor vehicle in this State without obtaining a California license, but he must obtain a California chauffeur's license before accepting employment as a chauffeur from a resident of this State (Vehicle Code Sec. 252).
Nonresident drivers are extended the same privileges and are subject to the same penalties as resident drivers. (Vehicle Code Sec. 295).
Applications for operator's or chauffeur's licenses must be made on the form furnished by the department. Vehicle Code Sec. 265).
Every application for an operator's or chauffeur's license must be signed and sworn to by applicant before a person authorized to administer oaths. (Vehicle Code Sec. 266).
It is a misdemeanor to allow any unlicensed person to drive your motor vehicle upon a public highway. (Vehicle Code Sec. 335).
It is a misdemeanor to allow your minor child, ward or employee to drive a motor vehicle on a public highway unless licensed to drive. (Vehicle Code Sec. 333).
For the purposes of the issuance of an operator's or chauffeur's license, any person under twenty-one years of age shall be deemed to be a minor (Vehicle Code Sec. 350).

PULLING HERRING
ACROSS THE TRAIL
One man rises in the back of the hall to say if they passed the pension plan some of the big businessmen would bootleg, this is, wouldn't give an account of all they took in.
WATCHFUL WAITING
This idea to give everybody over 60 years of age $200 a month to spend has got the old folks on their tiptoes, but it will be quite some time before they hear the sleighbells ringing.
CLINGING VINES
The way the ring masters of the side shows try to hook up with the pension plan it looks as though the old folks have a look-in.
STEPPING ON THE GAS
The way people are shaping their plans it looks like the Voters are going to pile up a good workable majority for the Grass Root governor from the prairie state who is conducting his campaign from the methods employed during the horse and buggy days, with a balanced budget to point to with pride, which opponents view with alarm.
ARROWHEAD SURFACING
Grading and surfacing of the road between one mile northwest of Lake Arrowhead and Lake Arrowhead Dam have been finished, states a report to the engineering department of the Automobile Club of Southern California.
