mendous job of rehabilitation is the advertising success limited to the depression and post-depression period, insofar farm cooperatives are concerned. The most successful Calavo Growers of California "baby of the California industry," and the Cal-Fruit Growers Exchange, largest farmers' fruit cooperations in the world, both afforded example of the power of paper advertising in aiding general marketing accommodations.
Styly "baby," the avocado represented by the Calavo Growers' co-op, has skyrocketed years from "one lone tree ten pounds of avocados" to immense acreage, returning Calavo Growers MORE THAN A MILLION DOLLARS IN PROFITS during the past.
Calavo Growers of California reports: "The advertising season was divided equally among the three items—news-space, materials for advertiser and dealer service. Cost of advertising was 26 per cent of total cost of marketing. The increase directly reflected the rising effort in the various territories, the greatest ims being gained where the advertising was done. In addition, advertising was the principal in securing a premium on the local market average. The advertising budget has increased, the unit cost of ading has been reduced to microscopic figures..."
BURNING THE MIDNIGHT OIL
The present administration has passed the word that all the undistributed profits held by the big financial corporations will be heavily taxed—or the money must be handed out to their stockholders.
The corporations counter with the statement that those profits are held in reserve for emergencies. That strengthens the stock held by the stockholders. It seems the idea is to tax that money to help balance the budget. If the stockholders got hold of it they might blow it in.
BRUSH FIRE
A brush fire on West Broadway, which threatened to get out of control was extinguished by the Anaheim fire department last Friday before any damage was done.
And during the depression, with purchasing power at low ebb and every industry fighting for its very existence, the per capita consumption of oranges and other citrus fruits kept right on booming. Prices dropped, to the sure, but not as heavily as in most commodities, and the California Fruit Growers Exchange weathered the storm with a healthy financial rating and still fighting for new business. The Exchange advertising program—although one of the most extensive farm ad budgets in the country—COSTS LESS THAN ONE CENT PER YEAR PER CONSUMER!
Other California farm co-ops have similar stories to tell regarding the part which newspaper advertising has played in building their respective industries. And when the final chapter of the post-depression era is written, California cooperatives, assisted by the California press, might well do a bit of advertising for advertising!
