OLDEST PAPER IN ORANGE COUNTY
Anaheim, Calif., Thursday, June 4, 1936
Our Neighbors
In these strenuous days it is not always possible or wise to keep up with our neighbors; but when it comes to the welfare of our children, we are obliged to take note of what others are doing.
Since the earthquake of '33, nearly all the School Districts in southern California have taken to heart the safety of their school children and have brought their buildings up to the code established by the State, or are engaged seriously in the task at present.
Anaheim is one of two Districts in Orange County that have not as yet gone at this job of rebuilding.
The list in southern California is a long one. In our own County—Fullerton, Santa Ana, Laguna Beach, Seal Beach, Huntington Beach, Loara, Brea, Placentia, Etc. In Los Angeles County—Los Angeles, Glendale, Pasadena, South Pasadena, San Marino, Long Beach, Lynwood, Compton, Santa Monica, Claremont, San Dimas, Redondo, Beverly Hills, Culver City, and others.
Can we, as a progressive community, lag in this exceedingly important matter? Think it over then register your desire. Don’t fail in this important duty to vote, June 9th.

SYNOPSIS
Jack Gordon, crack air pilot, comes to New York on vacation from his western division duties. He is called back to Salt Lake City to fly a ship to San Francisco. He balks but changes his mind when he sees pretender Felice Rollins, society heir, board the west-bound plane. Felice treats him cold until they reach Chicago where a gun-toting foreigner med Stephani attempts to stop Felice from continuing to San Francisco. Gordon saves Felice. In Salt Lake City, Stephani attempts to bribe Jack offering him five thousand dollars to make a forced landing before they reach the coast. Jack refuses and locks Stephani a closet a few minutes before the plane leaves. But when they take off, Stephani is in his old at the plane!
ething about him—complain—he held here? He'd do anything to keep me from getting it.
Don't worry about him." shed Jack. Then, as he notice Stephani standing morosely at door of the station, a bright struck him. "Wait a minute." started toward the Count.
Come on inside the station," whispered, ignoring the latter's look. "I've just got the latest "I won't stand for it." The Count was becoming more and more excited. "It's suicide." He turned to the other passengers. "There's no sense taking such chances. We should insist they turn back."
After fixing the safety belts, Freddy returned to the cockpit only to be followed by Ann a moment later.
"Jack, come here—quick," she gasped. "This fellow Stephani's gone crazy."
"Here—keep her on this course and keep climbing so we won't kiss a mountain," Jack commanded Freddy. "I'll fix that cockroach."
"You gotta go back!" Stephani was screaming as he stood in the aisle, his eyes wild and his hair tousled. "You'll kill us all . . . I can't stand it . . . I'll jump out if you don't go back!" He looked like a man gone completely insane and panic was beginning among the passengers.
"Cut the comedy,' snapped Jack, starting toward him.
"Comedy!" Stephani's scream was as convincing as if he really had been insane. "You're trying to kill us and you call it comedy."
Before the pilot could reach him Palmer entered the situation. For a second there appeared on his face the cold expression of the killer who kills for the love of it. He rose quietly, struck Stephani on the jaw and then, before the money is to pay for them. I would car, a refrigerator, many things but not till I get Debt have ruined my man and even nation plunge so madly on. vide a means of gett Let's put the Townser operation, get the circulation, start the commerce, bring back then vote school bond we will have the money which to pay. I am 1 best schools money or fact any and all publications.
Many is the man who very threshold of even our Nation is in condition today.
Stop, look, listen, while going. There is no doubt we need repairs and provided for our children favor of all that, but we are other consideration fellowman that is about his home and his life that he has struggled hard and seemingly world to acquire a place in his reclining years of breath of contentment, thought haunting him day that he will soon vacate to the overlord we sacrifice our old for young and rising genera have many, many lur Dad and Mother have themselves of that might be provided with best that even they co-ford.
The high school, who...
Don't worry about him." Sheed Jack. Then, as he noticed Stephani standing morosely at door of the station, a bright struck him. "Wait a minute." Started toward the Count.
Come on inside the station," whispered, ignoring the latter's look. "I've just got the latest on the weather—naturally I must play straight in the office."
Yes..." Stephani followed eagerly as he slipped into the room.
"I've got nothing to lose," conceived the pilot, putting on a set air of conspiracy. "I'm not take you up on that offer."
Well, now that's more sensitively.
Wait here a minute!" whispered starting as though he had a sound. Pretending to be med he stepped out into theidor, then quickly locked the behind him. Humming a gay he sauntered out to thee.
Stephani doesn't live here any more," he winked at Felice as he his way forward to the pit. "He accidently locked self in the—in the Little Boy's an."
Recall? Her face lighted hap-" You don't know how read I am."
Ten-thirty weather reports just in—no change," said Freddy. Had been warming up thers.
All set," answered Jack, taking the controls. "Are all the passers abroad?"
Keep," answered Freddy as he led through the rear window. Skek gave her the gun and soon had left the runway and were going toward the cloud-wrapped attains. After they had level-ff Gordon pressed the button on summoned the stewardess. As gonna be bumpy up ahead," he said as she struck her in the door. "Better keep me on things."
I right," she answered. "And, he way—Mr. Stephani said to you he'd decided not to go by after all—he'd much rather with you."
Stephani!" Jack twisted in his seat until he could
"Cut the comedy,' snapped Jack, starting toward him.
"Comedy!" Stephani's scream was as convincing as if he really had been insane. "You're trying to kill us and you call it comedy."
Before the pilot could reach him Palmer entered the situation. For a second there appeared on his face the cold expression of the killer who kills for the love of it. He rose quietly, struck Stephani on the jaw and then, before the latter, completely knocked out, could fall to the floor, struck him again with terrific force.
Then he stood looking down at the unconscious man, his lips curled back in a vicious smile, as though the blow had given him a definite physical thrill.
"That second blow wasn't necessary," Dr. Evarts remarked coldly as he came and knelt beside the injured man.
"What'd you want me to do—kiss him?" sneered Palmer.
"What happened?" inquired Freddy when Jack returned.
"Stephani got funny — Palmer knocked him cold."
"Hadn't we better land and get rid of him?"
"Land, my eye! If we have to get rid of him we'll push him overboard." He switched on the radio and called Salt Lake.
"Elko closing in rapidly," came Pete's voice. "Return to Salt Lake or land at the nearest emergency field."
"Now wait a minute, Pete," protested Jack. "This looks like it might clear up a bit."
"Return to Salt Lake or land at nearest emergency field!"
"Okay." The pilot became resigned to the inevitable. Then to Freddy. "Hang on, we're heading for home." He tilted the plane for a curve. Hardly had he done so when the door opened and Felice entered.
"You're turning around," she cried. "But you can't do that."
"Please—you'll have to get out of here." Jack was all business. He turned back to banking the plane through the blinding snow storm which now surrounded them.
You promised you'd go through!
"I said I'd Try to get through. It can't be done. I can't risk killing everybody just to satisfy you."
"You're yellow!" she raged as she went out and slammed the door.
"What's the matter with Beulah?" Freddy inquired with We have spent, without the thought of tomorrow, without the thought of a day of reconing when our obligations should and will have to be met, even though we will be compelled to sacrifice, that we may balance our budget.
Now the question arises when are we going to take heed of where we are so madly rushing. We have gone on and on spending money, not so much our money but the other fellows money not stopping to figure, this must all be paid back, yes it is true, that some of it at least is federal money, the government's money but who are the government, not the governed as most of us would like to believe, but the overlords who at will can cause depressions and force collections to the extent of bankrupting the government as a people. Are we going to go madly on using our failures of the past as an excuse to farther our reckless spending. How long are we to allow this mad orgie of spending the other fellows money to continue. Does no one seem to think of where this is leading us to.
Does no one stop to think our very nation is being jeopardised. "When a nation's life's, at hazard we've no time to think of men" of of their own selfish gain.
When we so madly plunge ourselves into bonded indebtedness burdening our furture generation with debts they themselves will not live long enough to repay.
We are not only putting ourselves into the hands of the money power who, at will can crush out our very existence as a peace loving nations, but are dooming our children and their posterity to slavery worse than that our fathers fought, bled and died, to free the black man. Are we to forget what price was paid for our freedom only to plunge ourselves into a worse condition, are we going to allow that.
There is no one who believes in advancement and education more than I, and I also believe in paying for just that very thing. There are lots of nice things I would very much like to have but before getting them I first want to know
After they had levelled Gordon pressed the button on summoned the stewardess, she got be bumpy up ahead, he said as she struck her in the door. "Better keep me on things."
Jack twisted in his seat until he could cast Ann into the passenger apartment. The Count was in regular seat, smiling mocking-How did he get abroad." Just came running up at the second. What's the matter?" Better? The tone was bitter. Nothing's the matter—everything simply splendid!
Gordon three four two to Salt Lake—Jack was speaking into radio. "Gordon three four to Salt Lake—Three miles of Wendover—clear here heavy overcast ahead—what soo?"
Lake to Gordon three two," came the reply. "Elko ing zero—heavy snow—visi-zero—wind northwest by five."
So hot," muttered Freddy, the message as his pilot did it on a pad. He glanced the window and studied the snow-laden clouds which blotting out the landscape.
It's going to be pretty dry," said Gordon. "Better back and help Ann get the rigers into their safety you're going right on into storm?" Stephani demanded as the co-pilot entered everything is perfectly all soothed Freddy. "There's likely no danger."
He turned back to banking the plane through the blinding snow storm which now surrounded them.
You promised you'd go through!
"I said I'd Try to get through. It can't be done. I can't risk killing everybody just to satisfy you."
"You're yellow!" she raged as she went out and slammed the door.
"What's the matter with Beulah?" Freddy inquired with a grin.
"Her name's Felice," was the curt answer.
"Well then—what's the matter with Felice?"
"None of your darned business!"
If they start naming planes like Pullman cars, they'll call this the Squirrel Cage, grunted the other.
She's a pain in the neck," Jack started muttering, more to himself than to Freddy as he peered through the black blizzard outside. "Yellow, eh—because I won't risk nine people's lives—including her own—Well, all right—so what? But," he added as if reasoning with himself. "I can understand how she feels—once I start I hate to turn back ... Evarts won't get to save someone's life—and Waldemar's ma will sue for a million dollars and Felice won't reach that girl on the train."
He reached a sudden decision. "Wonder if I could sneak through to the South?" As he spoke the ship broke through into clear weather and both pilots heaved sighs of relief. Then Jack switched on the radio, and banked the ship.
"Gordon three four two to Salt Lake" he called. "Three miles south of Shafter — weather's breaking to the West—going to try it again."
(To be continued)
where the money is to come from to pay for them. I would like a good car, a refrigerator, many, many things but not till I get the money. Debts have ruined many a good man and even nations, so why plunge so madly on. Let's provide a means of getting money. Let's put the Townsend Plan into operation, get the money into circulation, start the wheels of commerce, bring back prosperity, then vote school bonds knowing we will have the money with which to pay. I am 100% for the best schools money can buy, in fact any and all public improvements.
Many is the man who is on the very threshold of bankruptey, even our Nation is in just that condition today.
Stop, look, listen, where are we going. There is no doubt but that we need repairs and protection provided for our children, I am in favor of all that, but insist there are other considerations. Isn't our fellowman that is about to loose his home and his life savings, all that he has struggled through a hard and seemingly heartless world to acquire a place when he in his reclining years can take one breath of contentment, without the thought haunting him night and day that he will soon have to vacate to the overlords. Should we sacrifice our old folks for the young and rising generations, who have many, many luxuries that Dad and Mother have deprived themselves of that their children might be provided with the very best that even they could not afford.
The high school, when the tax-
the children now going to Fremont, just across the street. The Broadway school still has room to spare for more students. Why not use the facilities we have, until we put the Townsend plan into a law. Folks do you know the Townsend plan would save over one million dollars to Orange County alone, in one year's time. If you don't believe it get the auditor's report for the fiscal year 34-35 and read it for yourselves and be convinced.
In closing I wish to say I have thoroughly analyzed in my own mind with this finding this citation. We are told by the students that teachers have lectured against the Townsend plan and then take straw votes as to the effect. This information has been given out as authentic altho I was not at the lecture or election yet we read in the papers where students are expelled for taking sides in political issues, against war, etc. This was not in Anaheim perhaps yet it exists in the California schools. My idea is not to try to influence the faculty or its co-ordinates to join the Townsend movement but to enlighten the voters as to the impractability of going farther in debt until we first know where the money is to come from with which to pay for said bonds again, I wish to say I am 100% for the bonds when we get the Townsend plan.
The tempting plum of Federal money to help build our schools, is being dangled before our eyes which is only a delusion and a snare. Our secretary of labor tells us only 40 cents of every dollar contributed by the government ever reaches its final destination.
Our secretary of labor, Mrs. Frances Perkins as she chooses to call herself is receiving $15,000 per year. A foreign car to drive, and all her expenses paid while her own husband, Mr. Wilson receives $25,000 per year, and their two sons $10,000 each, and yet she seems to think $1.00 per day is ample for the working man and $200.00 per month is entirely to much. I got this information from a man who worked in the office with her.
There is so much the voting public should know yet I do not want to tire the patients of our good Editor who has been so kind as to print that which I feel the public should know.

The high school, when the taxpayers money was squandered like a drunken sailor is now almost complete, a splendid, magnificent structure, when occupied will leave ample room for many of our breath of contentment, without the thought haunting him night and day that he will soon have to vacate to the overlords. The tempting plum of Federal money to help build our schools, is being dangled before our eyes which is only a delusion and a snare. Our secretary of labor tells us only 40 cents of every dollar contributed by the government ever reaches its final destination and that 40 cents is absorbed in transit. This must all be paid back in taxes but the tax will be on $1.00 and not on the 40 cents actually received. Think it over.
