Musical Treat Is Enjoyed
By Audience at
Salem Evangelical Church Friday
A real treat for the music lovers of Anaheim was the vocal recital at the Salem Evangelical church Friday evening when Madame Rosemary Rose of Hollywood presented a group of her talented Orange County students. Singing before an audience which filled the auditorium the vocalists gave a splendid performance of selections from great operas, the latter part of the program being comprised entirely of excerpts from the beloved Il Trovatore.
Two large flood lights lighted the stage and brought out the beautiful colors of the many flowers that had been so artistically arranged, with digitalis, coreopsis, sophoglossos and snapdragons as the basic blossoms. The grand piano which the Danz Music Company had provided for the occasion was draped with a cloth of deep orchid hue and the setting completed with a large vase of rosebuds.
Playing the piano accompaniment for the entire program, Madame Rosemary presented as the first number Miss Mildred Marchant of Tustin who sang as a soprano solo, "The Doll Song" from "Tales of Hoffman." Miss Faire Virgin of Garden Grove sang the "Waltz Song" from "Romeo and Juliet," followed by Craig Grainger of Fullerton singing "Caro Mio Ben". Miss Kathryn Belle Bolton of Santa Ana gave a beautiful soprano interpretation of the "Jewel Song" from Carmen, and Mrs. Margaret Elsner, also of Santa Ana sang "Queen of the Night," in a clear colorature soprano voice.
Mrs. George Sloop, Jr., whose name is also well known throughout the district sang a duet from "Norma." Arras Bugge of Sahta Ana brought the first part of the program to a close with his wonderful base baritone solo "Andre Chenier Aria."
The "Flower Song" from Carmen, in a tenor arrangement, was the number chosen by Haydn Bolander of Fullerton who opened the second part of the program. Miss Gladys Miller had selected a number from "Queen of Sheba" for her lovely soprano solo.
Special selections taken from the opera "Il Trovotore" were chosen for the finale numbers of the program. Stanley Berkey of Fullerton sang "Aria of the Duke" in baritone voice. The "Mantico and Lenora Duet" was beautiful as song by Miss Gladys Miller and Hayden Bolander, who was accompanied by a men's chorus singing the "Miserere" from offstage. A most inspiring musical. In the male chorus were Lyman Harpster, P. C. Browne, E. A. Collins, E. H. Elsner Edgar Elsner.
Ebell Study Group
Hear Talk On Foreign Trade
Mrs. H. A. Johnston, leader of the Bible Study Section of the Anaheim Ebell club, was hotess to a group of about forty-five members and guests at her Los Angeles street home Monday afternoon. As a special guest speaker for the afternoon Mrs. Arthur Kemper presented Gerald A. Glasscock of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce who gave a very interesting and informative talk, entailing his subject "Self Containment versus Foreign Trade."
Mr. Glasscock, who was introduced to the club by Frank Tausch, gave many surprising statistical reports on materials which are imported from various foreign countries. For example "metals used in the manufacture of automobiles are imported from eight different countries." While United States is presumed to be a self-sustaining nation, most people do not realize the great amount of manufactured articles and food materials that are brought into country from foreign shores.
Mrs. Louis Hoskins and Mrs. F. F. Collins conducted the study hour, covering chapters 10 and 11 of the Book of Genesis. Concluding the study hour the club adjourned until the beginning of the new term in October.
On the hostess committee for the afternoon, besides Mrs. Johnston, Were Mrs. Arthur Kemper, Mrs. L. C. Herron, and Mrs. R. N. Ashley, Mrs. Leo J. Friis, President of the Ebell club, and Mrs. Kemper
