The Golden Text is from Isaiah: "Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils; for wherein he to be accounted of?" One of the Bible selections in the Lesson-Sermon cites these words of Paul to the Romans: "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service." Another selection contains Paul's words to the Ephesians: "And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness." The Lesson-Sermon includes also these passages from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy: "The real man is spiritual and immortal, but the mortal and imperfect so-called 'children of men' are counterfeits from the beginning. Jack Gordon, crack pilot for the western division of Consolidated Air Transport, stormed into the office at Hap Waller, general traffic manager of the company, andammed the door behind him. "I come to New York on vacation and no sooner do I land here in Newark than I'm handed a wire telling me to go back West!" "Jack Berger just pancaked," answered Waller as he slipped on his horn-rimmed glasses and surveyed the rebellious visitor seriously. "Washed out?" Jack's face set firmly and he ran his fingers through his shock of curly black hair. "Broke his arm . . ." "The old potato can't take it any more." The pliot's handsome ice broke into a relieved grin. The bones grow brittle with ice. "That puts them in a spot on the Salt Lake-San Francisco can," continued Hap inexorably. You've got to go back. You now they wouldn't ask you to do this, Jack if it wasn't an emergency." "Sure, I know, Hap—but I got my own emergency." Gordon sat down on the corner of the desk and twirled his cap sheepishly. "I ate one round trip a year and is it. I've got one foot in Miami right now. Not a chance of taking that run." Now listen, Jack, cried, the waiting west-bound plane. When her slim figure and neat ankles had passed quite out of sight, Jack turned thoughtfully back toward Waller's office. "Thought you were over North Carolina by now," snorted the latter as his pilot made a contrite entrance. "You misjudged me, my boy," beamed Gordon. "Think I'd turn an old pal down? I just got to figuring that when two fellows have been kicking around this crazy business together as long as we have . . . I'll ride out to Salt Lake on the midnight tonight, then fly the rest of the way to the coast myself. You better wire 'em." When Jack reached the plane Felice was preparing to climb aboard. "Do you think we'll get to San Francisco on schedule?" she was asking Vi Johnston, the trim stewardess. "Sure, we'll get you there. Don't worry," interrupted the pilot. "We ??? Miss Rollins lifted her eyebrows slightly. Why, last year we completed . . ." "Yes, I know—97 and 6/10% of flights on schedule." She turned her back on him and asked Vi: "Have I time to send a telegram?" "You have five minutes. Plenty of time," answered the stewardess. "I'm going all the way through." Jack made one more stab at establishing cordial rules. time, and Mrs. Pitt is always bringing suit for contempt of court and so Mr. Waller says you are to take charge of us. Waldemar, come here, please." She looked wildly around and found Waldemar getting himself nicely greased by crawling under the plane. As the boy crawled out again, his face a black smear, and came to them, she continued: "This is Mr. Gordon." "Glad to meet you, young fellow." Jack extended his hand. "We'll . . ." (To be continued) LEGAL NOTICE NOTICE INVITING SEALED PROPOSALS FOR ADVERTISING NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that sealed proposals will be received by the City Council of the City of Anaheim at the office of the City Clerk of said city up to eight o'clock P.M. of Tuesday, the 12th day of May, 1936 for furnishing of all advertising for the City of Anaheim for the year commencing May 24, 1936 and ending May 24, 1937 all of said publishing to be done in conformity with the specifications for advertising, which specifications are marked and designated "Specifications for Printing and Advertising of the City of Anaheim, Series of 1933" on file in the office of the City Clerk, such proposals to be received as follows: You've got to go back. You know they wouldn't ask you to do this, Jack if it wasn't an emergency." "Sure, I know, Hap—but I got my own emergency." Gordon sat down on the corner of the desk and twirled his cap sheepishly. "I made one round trip a year and this is it. I've got one foot in Miami right now. Not a chance of my taking that run." "Now listen, Jack," cried the traffic manager as his pilot startled out the door. "You go down Florida, see some dame in a thing suit, and in a week you're flat broke and up to your neck in trouble. Now you know how strapped we are for pilots. A good..." "Not a chance. Not a chance." Gordon slammed the door again. In the ticket office of the airport, which lay just outside Walts's office, Jack almost bumped into a beautiful girl with honey-dropped hair who was arguing patiently with the clerk on city. "I've already explained that I just arrived from Europe this morning and that I have to get to San Francisco by the first plane," he was saying. "I didn't have me... I'm sorry, Miss, but I can't face your check without proper identification," answered the man mind the wicket. "It's a comfy rule." He glanced at jack as for confirmation. "Anybody in New York can tell you that I am Felice Rollins," the girl began impatiently. Then other idea occurred to her. Cruelly she stripped a hand-me diamond ring off her finger and tossed it on the counter here! Perhaps this will be sufficient security." "I'm sorry," the clerk shook his hand positively. "Is there anything I can do?" Jack plunged gallantly to the floor at this appropriate mommy, "I'm Pilot Jack Gordon." "I'm Felice Rollins." A note of most frantic appeal came into voice. "I simply must leave San Francisco tonight. It ans everything to me, and..." I'll vouch for Miss Rollins," said grandly to the clerk. I endorse her check." But you must take my ring," girl replied. Oh, no," Jack was still being launted. "I don't want that." Please," she insisted. "This is her eyebrows slightly. "Why, last year we completed..." "Yes, I know—97 and 6/10% of flights on schedule." She turned her back on him and asked Vi: "Have I time to send a telegram?" "You have five minutes. Plenty of time," answered the stewardess. "I'm going all the way through." Jack made one more stab at establishing cordial relations. "Any questions you want answered, sound off—I know all the answers." "Thank you," Felice smiled at Vi and hurried away. "Get wise, big fellow," the latter remarked cynically when she and Gordon were alone. "Girls don't fall for dashing aviators any more." "Listen, egg—I'm getting a little tired of wise-cracks. Everybody on this air line seems to think that the moment a good-looking girl comes along, I'm going to rush up and bite her on the neck." "Well, it has happened." "Where did you hear about that?" Jack flushed. "Anyway, that was seven years ago," he added lamely, then, his honor lat stake, he continued. "Two bucks is saying I'll take La Rollins to dinner tonight in San Francisco." "Sold," cried the girl. "Pardon me, please," interrupted Felice, who had returned just in time to hear the bet. She gave no indication that she had eavesdropped, however, but climbed indifferently into the plane. "How am I going to know you took her to dinner?" Vi demanded. "I'll send you the menu with her signature... or the two bucks." At this moment the bus from New York drove up and disgored its passengers at the airport. The driver lifted out a package of the latest newspapers and Jack hurried over to get one. The first thing which caught his eye was a bold headline reading: DARING JEWEL ROBBERY Beautiful girl bandits and 2 men companions store $50,000 diamond theft. Anxiously he read on: "A beautiful girl, wearing a brown fur coat, and two men companions, held up and robbed the jewelery firm of..." 12th day of May, 1936 for furnishing of all advertising for the City of Anaheim for the year commencing May 24, 1936 and ending May 24, 1937 all of said publishing to be done in conformity with the specifications for advertising, which specifications are marked and designated "Specifications for Printing and Advertising of the City of Anaheim, Series of 1933" on file in the office of the City Clerk, such proposals to be received as follows: First; for all advertising to be done by said city, required by law to be published in a daily newspaper published within said city; Second: for all advertising not required by law to be published in a daily newspaper; Third: for all advertising not required by law to be printed in a daily newspaper, but required by law to be printed each issue for a definite period of time. Jack glanced at Miss Rollins' brown fur coat, which could be seen through one of the windows of the plane. Then he felt in his pocket for the ring she had given him, pulled it out surreptitiously and glanced at it in dismay. "Oh, Mr. Gordon," Vi's voice jerked the pilot out of his reverie. "Will you come here a moment." When he arrived at the door of the plane she introduced him to a fluttery little governess who was gripping an imp of a boy of nine by the hand while she gazed at the plane in dismay. "This is Miss Harkins," began the stewardess. "I'm Waldemar's governess," the newcomer interrupted breathlessly, "and this is Waldemar—Waldemar Pitt, III." She exhibited the youngster, who was wearing cream trousers, an Eton jacket and a derby hat. "Mr. Waller says you are to take care of Waldemar and me on the plane. We've never flown before and it's imperative Waldemar arrive in San Francisco precisely on schedule. If sonny boy isn't there by tomorrow night, well, I shudder to think of the consequences." She suited the action to the word. "His mother probably will sue for a million dollars—she always has in the past." "Sue the air line?" Jack was trying to get all this straight. "No, no—sue Waldemar's father. You see, Mr. Pitt is forever getting dates mixed and forgetting to deliver Waldemar on law to be printed each issue for a definite period of time.
