SOCIETY CLUBS MARYWOOD HIGH SCHOOL 50-50 Club Enjoy Country-Club Supper-Dance The Lakewood Country Club of Long Beach was the scene Saturday evening for the supper dance of the Southern California 50-50 club. Large bowls of yellow snapdragons on tables spread with yellow linen made a most attractive color scheme. Among the special guests of the evening were Mr. and Mrs. Bob Miller of Santa Ana, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wolecott of Long Beach and Mr. and Mrs. C. M. McCoy, Mr. and Mrs. Ewald Lemcke and Mr. and Mrs. William Grafton. After the supper program, dancing to the strains of Lacy Swaine's music, was indulged in to a late hour. Those in charge of arrangements were High Edwards, V. B. Anderson, Merrill Gregory, Clyde Hill and Hume West. The next business meeting of the club is scheduled for May 9th at the Merrill Gregory residence, 130 Hillcrest, Fullerton. The ladies bridge party will be held in the McCoy home at 600 W. Union, Fullerton; while the next party date is set for Saturday evening, June 13th, at the California Country Club in Los Angeles. Ebell Club Sets Reciprocity Date hall has been set aside as Reciprocity Day by the club. The Luncheon program of which Mrs. Frank Tausch is reservation chairman will open at 12:30, to be followed by an afternoon program and business meeting. Co-chairmen on the luncheon hour are Mrs. J. W. Walls and Mrs. F. A. Yungbluth. Mrs. Ellen McEuen of Riverside, who is a state and district officer, will be the principle speaker. The program of entertainment will be of Scotch hue, featuring Mrs. John Stewart in costume, who will review "Mary Queen of Scotts." Robert Brown will sing a group of the old Scotch ballads and Miss Virginia Lee Peterson will give several readings in her usual talented manner. A continuous afternoon and evening program will mark the May-Day Festival of the Marywood High School Saturday next, with Miss Kathleen Burkhard of Anaheim as reigning Queen of the May. The program, from which the proceeds will go toward the completion of a swimming pool, will open with a bridge party in the social hall at 2:00 P.M. At 4:00 P.M., the coronation program, which will include musical and dance numbers by many of the talented students of the school, will be presented. The girls chosen to act as attendants to the queen are the Misses Mary Katherine Pipp and Virginia McIntyre, of Anaheim; Dion Rivers of Fullerton; Lucille Kramer and Mary Melaine Lypps of Placentia; Mary Ann Maag of Orange; Barbara Yard of Long Beach and Wedding Nuptials for the club is scheduled for May 9th at the Merrill Gregory residence, 130 Hillerest, Fullerton. Miss Winifred Hapgood attended her sister as bridesmaid while Willard Winsor, Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy and stationed at San Diego attended his brother as best man as Reverend Earl C. Bloss of the Episcopal church performed the eight o'clock ceremony. To complete her wedding ensemble Miss Hapgood wore slippers and hat also of navy blue long white gloves, and carried an arm bouquet of gardenias, lilies of the valley and orange blossoms. As "something old" she wore a gold locket that was a betrothal gift to her great-grandmother about ninety years ago, and had "borrowed" a beautiful lace handkerchief made by her grandmother, Mrs. Stella Hapgood, from her aunt Miss Grace Bailey. The bridemaid's frock was likewise of navy blue, and her accessori pink. She carried a bouquet of camelias and forget-me-nots. Only members of the two families and a few intimate friends were present at the ceremony, and later guests at the Hapgood home where a wedding supper was served. For the occasion the bride's mother had chosen an informal gown of ceru lace, and wore a corsage bouquet of Talisman roses. Pink and white predominated in the home decor. Group Mrs. Eva Craven Wheeler of Hollywood, state president of the W.C.T.U., was the principal speaker at the Frances Willard anniversary banquet Thursday evening at the Presbyterian church with women of the W.C.T.U.as hostesses. Outlining a five point program of education culminating in 1939 with the 100th anniversary of the birth of Frances Willard, Mrs. Wheeler urged continued education concerning the effects of alcohol and stated that a law has been passed providing for explanatory teaching on the subject in public schools. Mrs. Wheeler especially asked the cooperation of church people in working for better laws and needed legislation such as local option in the control of the sale of liquors. Individual cases were cited in their high damage to property and persons as illumination of the need for more strict actions in dealing with such offenses. A third speaker, W. O. Mendenhall of the county superintendent's office, discussed "The Temptations of Youth" with neglect of duty, disrespect for parents, cigarets, drunk driving, illicit sex relationships, and a sustained interest in the cheaper things of life as the factors in the creation of wayward youth. Program numbers included vocal solos, "Homing," "My Little Banjo," and an encore, "Shortin' Bread" by Charles Bush with piano accompaniment by Miss Romona Mulligan. Mrs. Richard Wise presented a selection from the opera "Il Trovatore" as a piano solo. The opening prayer was given by Dr. Ray C. Harker of the White Temple Methodist church. Mrs. Lola Grim, county W. C. T. U. president, conducted the program. Tables were appointed in pastel shades with bowls of spring flowers in the prevailing color theme. A chicken menu was served. Worthy Matron Jesse Seward and Worthy Patron Ralph Seward presided during the official meeting of the order. As the distinguished guest was escorted to the East she carried a beautiful bouquet of yellow roses. Later she was presented with two lovely gifts from the chapter. As another special guest Past Grand Treasurer Eva Boyd was escorted to a chair of honor. As official soloist of the chapter, Mrs. Pauline Houck sang a group of solos, as well as entertaining the guests during the dinner hour with a clever humorous song. Special business of the order was the completion of plans for the Masonic school week program to be held at the Fremont school this evening at 7:30. Also, the last card party of the series of four was postponed from May 5 to May 19, due to election.
