The Arcadia Land and Water company is the name of a corporation that was organized in Anaheim on Tuesday. There are 500 shares of stock in the corporation, all of which have been taken by the following gentlemen: Ex-Governor Samuel Merill of Iowa, President; George L. Joy, vice-president; R. B. Taylor, treasurer and superintendent; W. A. Witte, secretary; A. Rimpau. The last named three gentlemen are well known citizens of Anaheim, in whose success a lively interest is felt. Arcadia, the felicitous name given the proposed new settlement is a part of the Sierra Rancho in San Bernardino county. A narrow strip of land of the San Jacinto Rancho separates Arcadia from the well known city of Arlington. The company owns 14,000 acres of land, all of it irrigable and fertile. They have secured by purchase all the waters of the Temescal canyon, giving them a flow of 2,000 inches of water—quite sufficient for the uses of the settlement. The subdivision of the tract will begin at once, a hotel is to be built and other improvements will be pushed to completion with all energy. Applications for a number of tracts have already been placed on the books which was guaranteed to them. Anaheim is anxiously waiting to be proposed to. The ugliest old maid who ever received an offer of marriage never jumped at the chance with half the alacrity that Anaheim will exhibit when she is "asked" by the R. L. A. and P. A. R. R.
Rev. John Marquis has sold his Westminster home to George Johnson, and will move to Los Angeles. He is one of the oldest residents of Westminster and has seen the county grow up from a sheep pasture to a settlement of a thousand persons. His small orchard and vineyard for raisins have been very profitable to him, but his seventy-seven years warn him to cease from such labors. He and his wife have been mainstays in Westminster society and they will be greatly missed by their friends of every class.

Private advices received from interior points in Mexico state surrectos are gaining strength many places and that the government is doomed to be thrown. An Orange county recently returned from the seashore.
Senator Fair, of Nevada has written the following letter to the secretary of the interior setting forth a plan for the settlement of the Apache question:
United States Senate,
Washington, April 10, 1886:
The Hon. L. Q. C. Lamar,
Secretary of the Interior.
Dear Sir:
I beg to enclose the phamphlet of which I spoke to you yesterday. By examining the map you will see the exact position of Santa Catalina Island. It is isolated and too far from shore for any ordinary boat to reach it. My idea is that if the Apaches were put on this island, they would require no guards, and all that would be required would be a small steam tender and crew to run between the island and Wilmington for the purpose of communication and supplies. This would, in my opinion set the Apache question at rest forever, would save the country many valuable lives, and the government millions in money. The title to the island is perfect. As near as I can remember the price asked by the owners is either $3 or $4 per acre. Owing to the location of the island the climate is as mild and salubrious as can be found anywhere in the world. If you should look with favor upon my suggestion as to the value of this island for the purpose named, I shall be glad to go more into detail with you upon the subject.
Very truly,
JAMES G. FAIR.

The final day of free city delivery of mail on Monday passed off smoothly without a hitch. Business men who were late getting down town found the mail carrier had preceded them into their offices. He brought stacks of letters upon each of which one cent was due. Uncle Sam does no credit business and while heretofore city correspondence could have been carried on at penny postage, now free mail delivery is in vogue the old gentleman raises the price and the cost in the future for all sealed letters will be 2 cents.
