OLDEST PAPER IN ORANGE COUNTY
Anaheim, California, April 23, 1936
THE REAL QUESTION
After decision had, apparently, been made that the blight of a state's prison would not fall upon Orange county, there comes this week the unwelcome announcement that some people residing here, for reasons which should be apparent to all again are commencing the similarly unwelcome agitation to erect a bastile within the county's confines.
The question is one of high importance and should not be determined upon the benefaction which the building of a prison would bestow upon a relatively small number of people who would profit from such an enterprise if it came here. The harvest which a few landowners, and some real estate operators could reap by selling properties to the state upon which to build a prison, is definitely beside the point; the profits which might go to a minority of citizens within the county are all just as definitely not an issue in this controversy.
Is it, or is it not, to the welfare and the future of this county, the garden of the southland, to locate a penal institution somewhere within its confines?
If building a prison here would add to the welfare and the future of the county, then the prison should be a welcome addition. But if, upon the other hand, its location here would be detrimental to our best interests, would constitute a public nuisance, and be productive of nothing but scorn, and prove a hindrance to ourWith the passing of years, Orange county will become, in an ever increasing degree a mecca for tourists, and a resort for neighbors from all parts of the land. On a few days ago, the announcement made that, within twelve months, an enormous hotel and watering place will be built within the vicinity of Laguna Beach.
Imagine the effect of a prison erected few short miles from a resort. Concern of a prison upon our beaches and our beach Ponder the publicity which Orange county would receive when a jail break occurs or some notorious felon would be released after his inevitable parole.
It would be just as logical, and just reasonable for someone to advertise an island near San Quentin as a pleasure resort. And the success of such a resilient laboring under such conditions, may be due to the readers' imagination,
If another prison needs to be erected the state to care for the overflow of the now in existence, of course it must be located somewhere within the borders of California. But why Orange county, peaceful, renowned Orange county, should be considered as a possible site is beyond the imagination of the overwhelming number of its people. There's just one thing to your representatives in the legislature should be contacted. Your own opinion in the matter will bear much weight.
Your own future, in no little degree, is
southland, to locate a penal institution somewhere within its confines?
If building a prison here would add to the welfare and the future of the county, then the prison should be a welcome addition. But if, upon the other hand, its location here would be detrimental to our best interests, would constitute a public nuisance, and be productive of nothing but scorn, and prove a hindrance to our growth, then a state's prison ought not to be built here. And if the people of Orange county feel that the latter would be the case, this is the time to bring to bear whatever pressure they have upon an urgent situation.
Fundamentally, whatever the morrow may bring to this county depends upon its basic industries, and upon its far-flung agricultural interests. The citrus markets of the future, and the oil consumption in the years to come, will govern the progress that Orange county will make. In a comparison to that, the increase to business which a state penal institution might bring is negligible.
Federal receipts on March 25 for fiscal year were $3,035,727,926, which is an increase of 8 per cent over the same year previous. However, there is small fly in the ointment. On the same day the deficit for the year was about seven million dollars greater than it was on the same date in 1935. It seems that the money comes in, the more goes out.
A driver in New York lost his license because he was a moron. Well, there several people around here who had their cars like they are in the same class.

AFRICAN IN THE WOODPILE
The big oil concerns want the oil from South America, from Columbia and Venezuela, because of the rich by-products derived from those oils, which are cheaply produced. The oil wells here are shut down in consequence and American oil drillers are thrown out of work. A good stiff tariff would stop that.
