WAS JIM UTT
CROSSED UP?
While a good many who keep an eye on politics took it for granted that Tom McFadden's hat filled the state senatorial ring so for as regular republicans were concerned, Jimmy Utt, assemblyman from the south end of the county refuses to take it that way. He may be a candidate anyway, although all the insiders supposed that he would drop his ambitions when the support of the regular ring was thrown to McFadden.
The fact is that Jimmie feels he has received a touch of the well-known double-X. The story is that he was told if he would be a good boy at Sacramento he should have the backing of the Orange big shots for Nels Edwards' place this year. He did pretty well in the assembly, but occasionally he used his own judgment instead of that which was furnished him ready-made.
Still and all, he was lined up with party bosses in Orange county in what appeared to be a satisfactory manner. Then it gradually leaked out that Tom McFadden also was a creditor who had the call on boss support. That came as a result of the deal by which Leon Whitsell got the inside develop a case of real indigestion or whether enough of the usual soothing syrup will be administered to kill the pain remains to be seen. Someday, though the lid will be blown off and the inner workings of the Orange county republican machine will come to view.
NEW IDEA OF NEWSPAPERING
"Why not a newspaper that would tell the good things about Orange county?" queries one of the old-time officials. "We have a surplus of papers which are continually pointing out the things that are wrong," he continued. "If an outsider were to have formed his opinion of Orange county solely from the newspapers during the past few years he would not be very apt to want to come here to live."
This official, expanding his theme, declared that far too much publicity has been given the water and flood conditions in the county. He pointed out also that for several years one editor harped upon county government manners in such a tone as to make a stranger believe the supervisors were all crooked and that the entire county administration was run solely in the selfish interests of a few ring-
EPICS HAVE A LITTLE PAPER
A new free distribution made its appearance in the city seat last week. It is a small beginning but it advenience itself as been published in the terests of the Epic movement of that wing of the demos party. Another and older th

Still and all, he was lined up with party bosses in Orange county in what appeared to be a satisfactory manner. Then it gradually leaked out that Tom McFadden also was a creditor who had the call on boss support. That came as a result of the deal by which Leon Whitsell got the inside support for reappointment to the railroad commission, when McFadden himself was a candidate. Tom is said to have been bought off by the promise of that same support for something next time. Tom decided the senatorship was what he wanted, so the big boys had to drop Utt and line up for Tom, trying to put Jimmy off with a promise for the future it is presumed.
All of which doesn't sit well on Utt's stomach. Whether he will

He pointed out also that for several years one editor harped upon county government manners in such a tone as to make a stranger believe the supervisors were all crooked and that the entire county administration was run solely in the selfish interests of a few ring-leaders.
From time to time, he said other matters have been brought up in which the whole publicity emphasis was put on weak points, and little attention paid to the strong ones.
"Suppose that when the automobile industry was in its infancy the manufacturers had put out advertising which told the bad things about their cars. Would the use of autos increase as it did? Instead of doing that they kept telling the good things about their
