Farmers to Hold 2-Day Conference
A two day conference for farmers and engineers to consider problems of underground water supply and irrigation pumping will be held at the University Farm, Davis, January 9 and 10, according to Farm Advisor Harold E. Wahlberg. The program is in charge of the Agricultural Extension Service and the Division of Irrigation Investigations, University of California.
The general lowering of groundwater levels in California during the recent series of years of subnormal precipitation has greatly stimulated interest in possible measures of underground water control and in means of reducing irrigation pumping costs. Furthermore, the recent decision of the California Supreme Court applying the new rule with reference to riparian rights is recognized as having an important bearing on rights to underground waters in California. All of these questions will be taken up in the conference, with special reference to matters in which farmers have a practical interest.
Among the subjects to be presented are:
"Resume of Present Status of Underground Water in California" by Frank Adams, Professor of Irrigation Investigations; "The Riparian Doctrine in California and the Significance of the Recent Decision by the California Supreme Court in Peabody et al vs. the City of Vallejo, with special reference to underground water" by Harold Conkling, Deputy State Engineer; "The Federal Policy on Agricultural Resettlement, with Michigan Folks Will Have Picnic"
The official picnic reunion for the Wolverines is announced by President E. E. Haring of the Michigan Association of Southern California. It will be held in Sycamore Grove Park, Los Angeles, all day, Saturday, January 4th.
The County Registers will be open all day, hot coffee served and silk badges supplied. The program will follow the dinner hour and will include music and addresses.
All former residents of Michigan, including tourists, are invited. Ask questions of C. H. Parsons, MU1918, or call at the Seaboard National Bank, 6th and Spring Streets, where you may see all the state registers at the Federation headquarters.
PADDLE YOUR OWN CANOE
Many conservative citizens believe the only thing for Orange county to do is conserve water would be to figure out some proposition and go it alone. A good sensible plan, not costing too much money, it is believed would meet with unanimous approval. Although elections are a good deal like a horse race.

There's an old saying that when the farmer is prosperous everybody else is getting along all right. But when a government fixes the price of a commodity, and if it sells on the open market for less, and the government pays the farmer the difference, the butcher, the baker and candlestick maker believe there should be a New Deal. And lo and behold if the Mae West Offer Sponsor Big Benefit
Mae West phoned Mount Sinai Home for Invalids Christmas Eve to state that she was on too glad to lend her name sponsor for the gigantic Jake Benny-Dick Powell "All Stars Show" to be presented by the mammoth Shrine Civic Auditorium stage. Saturday night, January 25. With the addition of Miss West's world famous name the list of notables sponsoring the worthy benefit show has swelled to the enormous total of 550 persons—leaders in the stage and screen realm; merchant princess newspaper publishers; producer directors, doctors, lawyers, radio executives and radio stars. It understood that Mayor Frank Shaw has wired President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on behalf of Mount Sinai, of which institution he is a devout helper, endeavoring to complete arrangements whereby the President will press a button in the White House to ring a gong in the Shrine Auditorium officially opening the Jack Benny Dick Powell show, January 25.
The Western Union and Telephone companies are to make arrangements for the execution of this magnificent gesture.
Ticket headquarters have been established at 737 So. Hill Street, Los Angeles, according to Max L Mark, Director, and all branches of the Southern California Music Co. ticket offices throughout Southern California. Mail order from out-of-town are filled at the main box office of the Southern California Music Co. Ticket office.

THIS WAY OUT
Before we went off the gold standard you could take a five dollar gold piece into Mexico and get 18 silver pesos for the five spot. If a Mexican came to the U.S. and bought a five hundred dollar car, he would have to bring with him 1800 silver pesos to pay for it. Now, if all the countries who do business with each other, would put gold and silver on a parity it would straighten out this bugaboo called depression.
Church To Show Movies, Buena Park

IT COSTS LESS PER WEEK TO COOK YOUR MEALS WITH NATURAL GAS
The dime you pay for a cup of chocolate seems a trifling expense. Yet even this small amount is more than the cost of Natural Gas to cook the meals you eat in a week.
Figures for this region tell the story. They show that the average family using gas for cooking pays about a cent per person per day.
If you are not enjoying all the benefits of modern gas cooking, you are missing a convenience that costs little. The newest gas ranges, with clock control and many other refinements, give far more leisure and better results.

Well, here I am way up in the big city . . . where the fog is supposed to "rain" supreme and the sun is always shining . . . that is except when it's foggy or raining . . . anyway .
Last Monday evening (or maybe twere early Tuesday morning in the wee early moments when I took the Fliver and we started out for a little jaunt. Was truly surprised however, that there were so many cars on the road and yet didn't see anything that resembled an accident anywhere along the line not even a "weaving" car . . . must've been the speed cops were dressed like dummies in a bridge game and the well known speeder hesitated to take a chance . . . or maybe many of them had dolls (the china kind you know) in the car and didn't want to break them and as a consequence didn't even fracture or bend the traffic laws.
Well Boss . . . here I am sitting at a typewriter in a newspaper office and it's the day after Christmas and I'm well . . . I'm feeling fine . . . if you know what I mean.
Rate Reduction By Gas Company
"Thousands of customers of Southern Counties Gas Company in Anaheim and vicinity will benefit through the voluntary reduction in gas rates just announced with the approval of the California Railroad Commission," according to a statement issued recently by Fred Merker, district manager of the company's properties in this vicinity.
"All of our customers whose homes are equipped with an automatic natural gas water heater and who use a gas range as well as gas heating equipment of certain minimum standards will obtain a fifteen per cent reduction or discount on that portion of the monthly bill between $2 and $25," continued Mr. Merker.
It was pointed out by gas company officials that the lower rate will bring the convenience of modern, natural gas service for the lower rate will bring the convenience of modern, natural gas service for the many household uses for which it is unusually well adapted, into more general use in Southern California homes and at lower cost than ever before.
Extensive exploration and development of new oil and gas fields in California in recent years together with the already existing supply in older oil and gas fields assures an abundant supply of this modern fuel for many years to come.

Tell K. B. that on the way up I noticed a sign at Selma which would indicate that the Rotary of that fair city needed some visitation . . . the sign on the highway looked something like the "Old Wagon Wheel" (not the one they're singing about now . . but the one they threw away to put on a new one and the side is about worn away to the hub. . .) Terrible I calls it.
Well, the Chief says it's time for lunch and you know me . . I don't like missing the meals . . so until later . . I'll be seeing you.
O, o, and they told me that lunch is not quite ready so I'll tell a little bit more .
Every town along the road reported . . not to me but I got it from the secretaries of the chambers of commerce . . that things were better in each of the towns than in the one further back (south). Of course Los Angeles might ignore such statements . . but anyway . . I know chamber of commerce secretaries—haven't we one of our own?—and I know they ALWAYS state facts . . that is sometimes they might . shall I say . . elongate . a little, but they hit the point occasionally . . and I believe they told the truth. .
The mayor of San Francisco didn't meet me at the Golden Gate but then he was busy with bridge . no, no, not playing the dummy had, he's playing a wise hand and watching the men at work spinning cable across Oakland, and Angelo (That's Mayor Rossi's front name) he's keeping a weather eye on that cable to see that San Francisco gets its share . then too, he has a bridge tying him up with Marin County . so you see the old boy is pretty busy and I guess that's the reason many of them had doils (the china kind you know) in the car and didn't want to break them and as a consequence didn't even fracture or bend the traffic laws.

"Gas rates have steadily declined since 1913," said Mr. Merker, "although the cost of other household commodities has steadily increased. This decrease in the rates for modern natural gas service is due in some degree to the widespread conviction throughout Southern California that natural gas is the most economical and most dependable of all fuels for cooking, water-hearing, house-heating and for automatic refrigeration. The great increase in sales of modern gas ranges, water-heaters, refrigerators and furnaces by up-to-date dealers in every city and town has attracted nation-wide attention during the past few years. We attribute this noteworthy increase in sales to the efficiency and the dependability of modern gas appliances which are the choice of thirty and discriminating families everywhere."

but then he was busy with bridge ... no, no, not playing the dummy had, he's playing a wise hand and watching the men at work spinning cable across to Oakland, and Angelo (That's Mayor Rossi's front name) he's keeping a weather eye on that cable to see that San Francisco get's its share ... then too, he has a bridge tying him up with Marin County ... so you see the old boy is pretty busy and I guess that's the reason he couldn't meet me ... but I had a motorcycle escort ... the sucker led me all the way into town and naturally I couldn't run away from such an escort so I stayed down to 45 miles an hour ... and when we got to the city limits he turned me loose but forgot the key to the city (I don't believe he had it anyway. . . )
And here's one for the book ... and I had proof that it really exists ... In San Francisco the traction people got kind of tired of having the motormen alibi about the heavy traffic conditions making them late ... so they have taken the tracks away from them and now street cars ... that is some of them ... can wander all over the street ... looks like a bus but it has two trolley poles and two trolley wires ... talk about weaving ... well if a traffic officer of the south is ever put on duty up there ... well he'd be run ragged trying to figure out who the heck that drunken driver is anyway. ... When you want to get off the derned thing all you have to do is signal the motorman and he politely dumps you on the curb and goes back to the middle of the street merrily singing his song of next stops. ... If a car gets in his way ... he don't have to stand and cuss the driver ... all he does is circle around him and go on.
Well, anyway, I drove back
