The Golden Text is from the Psalms: "Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; . . . For thou art great, and doest wondrous things; thou art God alone." Among the Bible citations in the Lesson-Sermon are these verses from Matthew: "And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. . . And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease." A correlative passage from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy, states: "Divine Truth, Life, and Love gave Jesus authority over sin, sickness, and death. His mission was to reveal the science of celestial being, to prove what God is and what He does for man." CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE Cypress & Claudina W. I. Gough, Pastor 403 E. TAYLOR Executive Secretary Agricultural Council of California Leading the Nation in the march toward farm recovery, California agriculture has more reason to say "Happy New Year" at the start of 1936 than at any other time since the dawn of depression. When the books are closed on the year 1935, according to all reliable indications, the gross income of the California farming industry for the Old Year will probably total approximately $500,-500,000—a gain of some $70,000,-000 in twelve months. But even more phenomenal, the 1935 gross income record, if it measures up to present calculations, will chalk up a remarkable increase of $178,000,000 in three years, indicating that the California Farmer is definitely on the road back to better days. Looking ahead to the New Year, California agriculture must expect a "leveling-off" process, with steady, but more moderate advancement, if normal price levels are maintained and serious labor troubles are avoided. A conservative estimate of the 1936 gross income gain over 1935—barring initiation—places the expected increase at 10 per cent, or a jump of some $50,000,000! And with that expectation, plus the indication that agriculture is achieving greater stability and solidarity, the California farmer has much to be grateful for—and much of promise ahead. If he has profited by some of the bitter lessons of the depression, however, the farmer has learned to take nothing for granted. Low operating costs, more efficient produc- California agriculture, on the other hand, will be compelled to exercise "eternal vigilance" during the New Year to hold its advantage and forestall developments which might place the industry at serious disadvantage. Chief hazards of the New Year, from the standpoint of the farmer, lie in new tax proposals which, if successful, would place a disproportionate and ruinous share of the tax burden directly on the forming industry. If a special session of the State Legislature is held during the year, agriculture must guard against an ad valorem tax, which would throw the load on real property, and against any attempt to initiate the even more dangerous transactions tax, which would pyramid and multiply to such an extent that California farm produce could not be offered on highly competitive world markets at a fair price. Even more dangerous, because it has already qualified for a place on the general election ballot next November, is the so-called "single-tax," designed to place the entire burden of governmental support on real property—taxing improved and unimproved property at the same rates. And linked in with the single-tax," as bait for the untinkling voter, is a proviso repealing the sales tax. Although the state sales tax may be far from perfect, it repeal at this time would play into the hands of tax dodgers who escaped any share in government- WHAT OTHERS THINK FOR THE RECORD President Roosevelt (at Atlanta) made a remarkable assertion about his conference with bankers in the spring of 1933. "I asked them," he said, "what they thought the maximum national debt of the United States could rise to without serious danger to the national credit." They replied, according to the President, "that the country could safely stand a national debt of between fifty-five and seventy billion dollars." Mr. Roosevelt followed this announcement with the comment that at that time the bankers were "ready to put the country far deeper into debt than I shall ever let it go." For the historical record, if for nothing else, the names should be divulged of those bankers who were willing to have the public debt increased two-fold or three-fold. There exists in some other countries a loose and easy philosophy about the national debt—the idea that those who buy the bonds will pay the interest as well as earn it, and that the size of the debt is relatively negligible. That notion has not prevailed here. Our most conservative bankers applauded the great reduction of the debt in the first ten years after the war. If any bankers worthy of the name, even in tax,” designed to place the entire burden of governmental support on real property—taxing improved and unimproved property at the same rates. And linked in with the single tax,” as bait for the untinkling voter, is a proviso repealing the sales tax. Although the state sales tax may be far from perfect, it repeal at this time would play into the hands of tax dodgers, who escaped any share in governmental support until it was enacted. And more important, it would plunge state finance into hopeless enaos, leaving the man with real property—the farmer, the homeowner and the business man—to carry the burden for the entire State. California agriculture, from an industry standpoint, has good cause to say Happy New Year. But from a political standpoint, it must prepare to follow prize-fight rules and protect itself at all times. GOOD ENOUGH "Prisoners at Lynn, Mass., are fed chicken instead of pork." Bravo, say we. The costly pampering of our malefactors has gone on too long. Atlanta Constitution. MISLAYING No wonder a hen gets discouraged at times. She never can find things just where she laid them. Independence (Kans.) Reporter. Owing to the overcrowded condition of our columns,” says this week’s Podunk News, “a number of births and deaths were unavoidably postponed this week.” THE DOCTORS ARE RIGHT Women should take only liquid laxatives Many believe any laxative they might take only makes constipation worse. And that isn't true. Do what doctors do to relieve this condition. They use a liquid laxative, and keep reducing the dose until the bowels need no help at all. Reduced dosage is the secret of aiding Nature in restoring regularity. You must use a little less laxative each time, and that's why your laxative should be in liquid form. A liquid dose can be regulated to the drop. The liquid laxative generally used is Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin. It contains senna and cascara—both natural laxatives that form no habit even with children. Syrup Pepsin is the nicest tasting, nicest acting laxative you ever tried. The CRUSADES (Continued from page 4) in hell. For we fight again tomorrow." "What's left of us," the minstrel muttered. At this time it was not distant—a man from the Christian camp stood before Saladin. The man said: "My master, Conrad of Montferrat, offers you victory." "Tomorrow I shall win it." "While Richard lives," the man said, "'victory is not certain." Saladin looked at this man in silence for a moment. "And how can Montferrat aid me?" "My master will join his fortune with yours, Lord Sultan." "Yes? At what price?" "Only a little, great Sultan! He asks the kingdom of Jerusalem, which he will rule under you. He knows that the Crusade is broken." "And what does he offer me?" The man stepped closer, and his voice was low. "He offers Richard's death. Within the hour, if you agree, Richard will lie on the battlefield among the slain." "Get out," snapped Saladin. "I'll have no traffic with assassins!" He turned away, as scuffling guards hauled the Montferrat messenger away from his presence. And he faced a woman, who starred at him with wild eyes. In spite of her yashmak, he recognized her. "Berengaria!" "I had to come. In the garden I could hear the battle. Does—Does Richard live?" Saladin bowed a little. "He lives, fair one. But not for long. Traitors are hunting him, out there." "I must go to him! Oh, you will not keep me from him now?" "Princess," he said sadly, "you came to me. You belong to me." She whispered: "You can save him?" "Your Lion King," Saladin said, "is a tempest that has shaken Islam. My men have died beneath his sword. If he were here—as you are—my captive—then I would spare him." "For a ransom?" "Yes." "Then I will be his ransom! Take me—Take me to be your wife! But let him live! Send men to aid him. You can save him. You are powerful. Warn him, before it is too late!"
