All the way from green hills of Delemont, Switzerland, has a letter to the city authorities from Joseph Anaheim, who has been reading accounts in the papers concerning the fire at Brea, and has seen a reference to this city in condition therewith. He expresses regret because of the fire he asks for information regarding the origin of the name of this city. The origin of Anaheim is unknown to me,” he writes, “and I old very much like to know etymology of it.” He asks if he is some scholar or old settler who will be kind enough to help him with the information. He shall try to supply this information for this seeker after knowledge concerning a subject which must be of particular interest to him, as it is to all of readers. This city obtained its name from members of the Los Angeles Boyard Society, which was organized in San Francisco, in 1857, a colony of fifty German-born American citizens, who purchased land whereon this city is located, for the purpose of providing homes for themselves and allies. These men were engaged merchandising, engineering, in other gainful pursuits, and all were doing measurably they felt that, rather than in a city, they would go into country and engage in farm- and fruit raising. They felt they could better their condition so doing. They desired to plant yards and orchards and eshish themselves in a rural dis-tincted area. Vineyards were planted, fruit trees set out and reservations made for dwellings and farm buildings. A drawing occurred, and those gaining lots in the center of the colony reimbursed those obtaining lots further out. The first colonists came to Anaheim in 1858 and 1859 and were followed shortly by others until all of the original fifty shareholders had arrived. After the organization of the society, and when purchase of the land had been made, a meeting was held in San Francisco, at which the colony was named. There ensued a spirited discussion and several names were proposed, among them Anaheim, Anaberg and Anaheimgau, in all of which the etymology of the Santa Ana valley predominated, as the land was situated in the Santa Ana valley watered by the Santa Ana river. Anaheim meant a home in the Santa Ana valley. Anaberg referred to the Santa Ana valley and the mountains of the coast range in plain view, and while some suggested Anaheimgau, the etymology of which is obscure, yet the meeting decided the name was cumbersome, and it was dis-covered robbed and citizens murdered. They saw Casey and Cora nanging from Fort Gunnybags and, for ought we know, did more than act as mere witnesses. As the wells of Starr King’s church tollled for the funeral of James King of William, the city’s leading editor, who was assassinated by Cora, these men were swung into eternity. The men were taken from the county jail by the vigilantes, given fair trial, were found guilty and executed. Many another culprit was strung up. San Francisco was cleaned of its lawless element and the Vigilantes disbanded. THEODORE (SEAL) Sworn to and submits this 8th day of homes for themselves and villes. These men were engag- in merchandising, engineering, in other gainful pursuits, and all were doing measurably they felt that, rather than in a city, they would go into country and engage in farm- and fruit raising. They felt could better their condition too doing. They desired to plant yards and orchards and esi- sh themselfs in a rural dis- tictory. A surveyor was employed, with a party of assistants, the hither, surveyed the lands, out fifty lots, with streets inecting the colony. They had lady had a committee of their members looking for an advantage site in Southern California. My selected land in this valley, ore soil was found to be richly productive, where water for irri- ion could be had in abundance, where climate, it appeared to be, the best they had seen in their travels. Another reason for selecting particular site was that it at the crossroads of the routes between Los Angeles and San Diego, north and south and even tidewater at Wilmington the west to the San Bernardino loin on the east. For many years, until railroads took the place of the stage coach, mails andengers north and south pass-through Los Angeles street, in center of town, the thorough-being, likewise, El Camino of a century before. Anaheim meant a home in the Santa Ana valley. Anaberg referred to the Santa Ana valley and the mountains of the coast range in plain view, and while some suggested Anaheimgau, the etymology of which is obscure, yet the meeting decided the name was cumbersome, and it was disregarded. Each of the two remaining names had its adherents and supported and it was not until several days thereafter that a vote was taken and the name Anaheim selected. Like true sports and good citizens, the Anabergers moved to make it unanimous. From that moment on the colony was known as Anaheim, meaning a home in the Santa Ana valley, or, as some of the shareholders put it, a home by the Santa Ana river, which since the days of the original occupation has furnished water to irrigate these fertile fields. There never was a scintilla of doubt about it, there is not now, and never can be. It is not generally known, but it is nevertheless a fact that many of the Pioneers were members of the Vigilance committee which cleaned up San Francoscio of its murderous thugs and robbers in the 50's. They joined with the best citizens of the town, which was overrun by the lawless element. The courts and city officials seemed powerless to act, and a reign of lawlessness swept the town.
