Active support and cooperation can benefit every citizen of citrus districts
WITHOUT such a growers organization as the California Fruit Growers Exchange, the citrus industry could not have survived the conditions existing at the time of its founding in 1893.
Today 200,000 people are directly dependent on the industry for their livelihood. Hardly a resident of this region is unaffected by its prosperity. Over half a billion dollars is invested in groves and packing houses in California and Arizona.
These facts measure the responsibility of the Exchange in a leadership made inescapable by the will of three-fourths of the industry.
The Exchange cannot act on snap judgment or resort to opportunist tactics. Too much is at stake. Its course must be determined by careful weighing of the facts.
The Exchange cannot be content with the market as it finds it. It must do what no small marketing agency can attempt. It must make markets.
Hence Exchange distribution is constantly expanded and improved. Sunki advertising is employed to keep demand in harmony with production.
Exchange growers govern directly the policies and administration of their organization. They know that its destiny rests wholly upon the service the Exchange renders the industry and the community.
Today, more than ever, the Exchange merits and needs the active support of growers, bankers, business men and the public in general. From united effort we result better control of distribution, more energetic selling, increased consumer demand and a furthered welfare of every citizen of citrus districts.

County Seat When Territory North of Coyote Creek, Cut From County Lines
Ana and Anaheim in Political Battle For Court House County Offices; Bitter Fight Carried On During Campaigns to Start County.
Heim missed an opportunity to become the county seat range county in 1889 when the third and successful lot was made to withdraw from Los Angeles county and what is now Orange County. First move for division came in 1872 following the delay the oldtimers of a $1,000,000 bond issue by which Los County attempted to get give as bonus for railroad action. The assessed valuation the county at that time was 1000. The issue met a front of opposition in this county. The move for state county at this time was ended.
In the Los Angeles synidicate that they would again the bonds a bill was put in the assembly to create a county under the name Anaheim, which territory take in what is now Orcounty and extended north of San Gabriel river. Los defeated this bill and the were forced to stay in Los Angeles county.
In 1876 a bill was introduced in the Assembly creating the county of Santa Ana, embracing virtually the same territory as the first bill. Many of the leaders came out against the bill, however, and it was defeated. A big factor in this defeat was the emissaries of the Los Angeles railroad interests who bitterly fought the division idea.
Nothing more was attempted until 1889 when leaders in Santa Ana proposed the formation of Orange County. A bill was introduced into the Legislature in January of 1889 with the plotted territory taking in what is now Orange county and extended north to Coyote Creek and excluding all the territory extending northerly for many miles.
Los Angeles with its powerful organizations fought the third attempt as bitterly as they did the first two. They would have been successful had it not been for the San Francisco delegation which swung to the ranks of the proponents and the bill was passed.

Don’t Entrust Your Own or Your Family’s Well-Being to Unknown Preparations
BEFORE you take any preparation you don’t know all about, for the relief of headaches; or the pains of rheumatism, neuritis or neuralgia, ask your doctor what he thinks about it — in comparison with Genuine Bayer Aspirin.
We say this because, before the discovery of Bayer Aspirin, most so-called “pain” remedies were advised against by physicians as being bad for the stomach; or, often, for the heart. And the discovery of Bayer Aspirin largely changed medical practice.
Countless thousands of people who have taken Bayer Aspirin year in and out without ill effect, have proved that the medical findings about its safety were correct.
Remember this: Genuine Bayer Aspirin is rated among the fastest methods yet discovered for the relief of headaches and all common pains ... and safe for the average person to take regularly.
You can get real Bayer Aspirin at any drug store — simply by never asking for it by the name "aspirin" alone, but always saying BAYER ASPIRIN when you buy.

First Marshal Able To Care For Self; Handy With Gun
Accounted for Two Desperadoes And Possibly a Third Defies Crowd
One of the picturesque characters of the early days in and around Anaheim is said to have been City Marshal David Davis, familiarly known as "Dye" Davis.
It is said that he never drew his gun unless it was absolutely necessary and when he did he knew how to use it.
Among other stories that are told is that he accounted for two desperadores with the possibility of the third, although little or nothing was told of the third incident.
Another story of his devotion to duty and upholding of law is told of an attempt to build a bonfire at the corner of Los Angeles and Center streets when a crowd of the oldtimers, all native born Germans, though naturalized citizens of this country decided to celebrate the victory of the Pursians over the French in 1870.
Davis warned the crowd that they could not build a fire on public property. They appealed to Mayor Max Strobel, who granted them permission to hold their celebration and fire. However, Davis, when informed of the order told the crowd that he would "take care" of any man who attempted to light the fire.

Davis warned the crowd that they could not build a fire on public property. They appealed to Mayor Max Strobel, who granted them permission to hold their celebration and fire. However, Davis, when informed of the order told the crowd that he would "take care" of any man who attempted to light the fire.
One big man, husky and hard, decided he would touch off the fire. He was rapped across the head with a club carried by the marshal and carried away unconscious.
The ultimate result was that the celebration was held in back of where the Bank of America is now, on private property.
Davis was a mild mannered and courteous man until he was stripped and then he was an officer of the law and ready to act.
The enmity he arsued through his fracas with the crowd defeated him at the following election. He was succeeded by Dick Barham, who proved to be a worthy successor.
We take this opportunity of publicly extending to the Anaheim Gazette our most cordial greetings on this its 65th Anniversary.
We glory in the stability and honesty of purpose that has marked the lifetime of the oldest publication in Orange County and wish it continued success.
