OVER 700 ATTEND CITRUS INSTITUTE
HELD IN SANTA ANA LAST SATURDAY.
(Continued from page 3)
during the past decade. Today the growers are more soil conscious than they have ever been before. Very little subsoulling is done and shallower cultivation is practiced. Ten years ago, according to the cost study, the average cultivation costs per acre was $22.00. The average cost today is $10.00 an acre. The speaker pointed out the harmful affect of stirring orchard soils while they are wet.
CONSERVATIVE PRUNING
Pruning practices today in Valencia oranges has to do largely with the removal of dead wood. Pruning costs have been reduced practically 60% in the past decade. On normal lemon trees it was shown, a light pruning, consisting of a thinning out process, is more productive of heavy yields than the old-fashioned heading back system. Only on weak lemon trees should heavy pruning be done.
A better knowledge of disease control measures is now appreciated by growers in general. The recent discovery that Scaly Bark is caused by a virus has cleared up a question of long standing as to the cause of the disease. More care in the selection of budwood for citrus tree propagation was made by the speaker. It is possible, he said, that the future generations of nursery and new plantings will show a considerable less amount of Scaly Bark infestation if full use of our present knowledge of the disease is exercised. Budwood should only be selected from old trees of proven immunity to Scaly Bark as well as the important characteristics of fruit yield and quality.
Considerable significance can be attached to the recent discovery by the Experiment Station of Zinc Sulphate spray as a remedy for mottle leaf control. This material has been used extensively in Orange County and other citrus producing areas in California with very satisfactory results.
The propagation of lemons has been practically revolutionized in the last few years. In the first place the root stock used today is almost entirely sweet stock in contrast to the sour stock formerly used. There is a tendency today also to select the more vigorous strains of lemon trees, tending to a longer productive life. Formerly the more precocious types of trees were selected, which has resulted in premature decline and generally weaker trees. In the use of the sweet rootstock, however, the Farm Advisor pointed out, growers must be careful with the irrigation practice in the control of the moisture condition adjacent to the crown of the tree. Sweet stock, when used for either lemons or oranges, is considerably more susceptible to the gum disease and to the soil gungi which commonly attack citrus roots.
The morning session featured economic and marketing problems of the citrus industry, the speakers being Paul Armstrong, General Manager of the California Fruit Growers Exchange; D. D. Waynick, Anaheim; Edson Abel, California Prorate Commission; and C. Anaheim Couple Last Monday.
A very pretty wedding was last Monday evening at when Miss Mary Beebe, Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Beebee to John Kelsey, also of Ante The wedding ceremony at Melrose Abbey with Rev. Walker of the Presbyterian officiating.

WAKE UP YOUR LIVER BILE—WITHOUT CALOMEL
And You’ll Jump Out of Bed in the Morning Rarin’ to Go
If you feel sour and sunk and the world looks punk, don’t swallow a lot of salts, mineral water, oil, laxative candy or chewing gum and expect them to make you suddenly sweet and buoyant and full of sunshine.
For they can’t do it. They only move the bowels and a mere movement doesn’t get at the cause. The reason for your down-and-out feeling is your liver. It should pour out two pounds of liquid bile into your bowels daily.
If this bile is not flowing freely, your food doesn’t digest. It just decays in the bowels. Gas bloats up your stomach. You have a thick, bad taste and your breath is foul, skin often breaks out in blemishes. Your headaches and you feel down and out. Your whole system is poisoned.
It takes those good, old CARTER’s LITTLE LIVER PILLS to get these two pounds of bile flowing freely and make you feel “up and up.” They contain wonderful, harmless, gentle vegetable extracts, amazing when it comes to making the bile flow freely.
But don’t ask for liver pills. Ask for Carter’s Little Liver Pills. Look for the name Carter’s Little Liver Pills on the red label. Resent a substitute. 25c at drug stores. © 1931 C.M.C.

As part of its program in observing 20-30 Safety Week, the 20-30 Club of Anaheim joined with the other clubs of Orange County in a joint meeting in Orange last night.
The speaker at this meeting was Deputy Chief Roy E. Steckle of the Los Angeles police department. Following the talk by Mr. Steckle Mrs. Semelmyre and Mr. Johnson gave an interesting demonstration of difficult pistol shots. Mrs. Semelmyre is one of the best women pistol shots in America and has many medals which she has won at various matches.
The local organization is one of more than 130 20-30 Clubs in seven western states engaged in the stressing of safety during the current week, reported President Charles Bush. Elaborate plans have been made to stress the importance of abiding by traffic laws, both on the part of the driver and the pedestrian.
Windshield stickers now are being circulated by the local 20-30 Club to assist in calling the attention of the public to the necessity of curbing accidents, injuries and fatalities caused by traffic by making the citizens of Anaheim safety-minded.
Among the important phases of traffic safety being emphasized are proper speed, turning, passing and signaling, observance of right of way, maintenance.
