Junior Ebell Club Entertains Mothers Members of the Anaheim Junior Ebell Club paid tribute to their mothers Tuesday night when they presented a program at 7:30 in the Elks' club house. Hawaii was the theme for the evening with Hawaiian music and entertainment made famous by the Islands. Mothers and members of the senior Ebell club were the guests of honor. The club bulletin reveals that the riding section is planning a paper chase for the night of Thursday, May 9, and rides for May 13 and 23. The contemporary history and literature section will hold a dinner meeting at the home of Mrs. E. E. Smith, 631 North Clementine street on May 15. The dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. and Miss Wentz will be the speaker. Daphne Goss Hellerman will present the final play study group Thursday, May 16, in K. P. hall. Holders of season tickets may bring a guest to this event. The contract bridge section will hold a tournament at the home of Mrs. Charles Harbeson on Thursday, May 21. Play will start at 7:30 o'clock. Paving the way for legislative action to protect California farmers from the forced payment of extra-legal and unjustified brokerage fees, the Progressive Merchants Association of California—representing chain food stores throughout the State—has agreed to give vigorous support to legislation prohibiting the payment of brokerage by a seller to a buyer. The new legislation, outlawing sharp trade practices which have cost farmers many thousands of dollars, will be sponsored by state-wide farm organizations, with the backing of the chain store group. The action of the chain store group in placing themselves on record against the buyer-owned brokerage system closely followed adoption of a resolution by the Agricultural Council of California, representing the major farm cooperatives, condemning the policy of certain wholesale, retail and chain food distributors of operating brokerage offices to secure brokerage fees which, in effect, constituted accessions. The proposed legislation drafted, will prohibit brokerage, rebates, etc.,buyer, the buyer's age, subsidiary, directly or indirectly effect, the legislation w fair price concessions to buyer as opposed to a go far toward stabilizing justice to the chain g be stated that only one multiple-unit organization guilty of employing the brokerage system. And the chains to back against the practice material assistance in sec of the remedial legislation. The Agricultural Council, went on record at its relative meeting as being extortionate and discredit store tax bills, designed ing power of the state great chain organizationness. It is the position of operatives that any bad which may have sprung the mushroom growth should be eliminated by corrective legislation. And the Council, mind that the great distributor chain stores are all the marketing of California has consistently opposed this and previous legislation any attempt to prevent complete elimination of the selves. Neither inheritance materialized. While one "banked" on his own resources, saved his surplus and was able to take advantage of opportunities which advanced him to the presidency of a large corporation—the other spent as he went, even accumulated large debts, and at this most critical point, found himself out of a job. The proposed legislation, now being drafted, will prohibit the paying of brokerage, rebates, etc., by a seller to a buyer, the buyer's agent, employee, or subsidiary, directly or indirectly. In effect, the legislation will eliminate unfair price concessions to one class of buyer as opposed to another and will go far toward stabilizing markets. In justice to the chain stores, it should be stated that only one or two of the multiple-unit organizations have been guilty of employing the buyer-owned brokerage system. And the decision of the chains to back the present drive against the practice should be of material assistance in securing enactment of the remedial legislation. The Agricultural Council, incidentally, went on record at its regular legislative meeting as being opposed to all extortionate and discriminatory chain store tax bills, designed to use the taxing power of the state to force the great chain organizations out of business. It is the position of the farm cooperatives that any bad trade practices which may have sprung up, incident to the mushroom growth of the chains, should be eliminated by agreement and corrective legislation. And the Council, mindful of the fact that the great distributing systems of the chain stores are a vital factor in the marketing of California produce, has consistently opposed, both during this and previous legislative sessions, any attempt to prevent abuses by complete elimination of the stores themselves. Prior to the heavy summer traffic of this arterial each year, the city fixes up the driving and parking stripes. SMITTY SAYS... Now that the bonus bill has been passed, wonder what we're gonna do with all that money... you know the average world war veteran has been broke so long that... well you may know how it is... While driving out the highway south of Anaheim the other night I discovered a resting place that Ananias should have discovered when making his mythical trip looking for an honest man... that is it looks like maybe he should have. There is a small place there that has been for sale for some time I understand and the owner, either through error or perhaps on purpose has an ornament in front of it... a small white elephant... Wonder what the significance could be... or should I say inference... Oscar Waldorf (Ed Ludwig to his family) chef de gare of Al's Lunch room says that this column would be better if the writer thereof ate more humph... could say something right mean about that... but, well maybe Oscar's right... Al PLACENTIA PLANS IMPROVE STREETS The Placentia City Council met at the Chamber of Commerce rooms last Monday night and it was decided to start work immediately on a street improvement program during which about $2500 will be spent, according to C. R. Young, mayor who presided at the meeting. The work will be done with the allocation of gas tax money coming to Placentia, and will be on the rough places on all streets of the city. Gus Barnes, street superintendent, is in charge. Lots and parkings were posted for weeks Tuesday, with a three-week period in which taxpayers may do their own work, after which the lots will be cleaned at city expense, with charges made to the owners. This is essential, it was pointed out by the councilmen, since the weeds are a fire menace. Routine business, including payment of bills, occupied the balance of the session. clining position K. B. Rigby would have tussled with the berserk cop and probably have gotten the gun away from him... But when he fell over "Kenny" Kendrick and then was tripped by Joe Elliott who was chasing a rabbit across the floor, his efforts were turned to saving his own equilibrium. Ray Smith remained in his seat... cool calm and collected... well anyway he had collected two or three members of the post and naturally could not move... When the lights were finally turned on again, Jimmy Heffron was seen calmly sitting at his desk writing up the minutes of the meeting, while Commander Earl Fulfer, stood at his station... the only sign of disturbance he And the Council, mindful of the fact that the great distributing systems of the chain stores are a vital factor in the marketing of California produce, has consistently opposed, both during this and previous legislative sessions, any attempt to prevent abuses by complete elimination of the stores themselves. As a matter of fact, the frequent charge that chain stores take money out of the State and the community, is entirely unfounded insofar as California is concerned. In California, according to a recent report of the Federal Trade Commission, purchases of farm products by chain food stores last year exceeded their sales of foodstuffs to California consumers by more than $90,000,000, due to the fact that purchases were made here for their stores throughout the Nation. Both the farmer and the storeman will be on the path to better days if a policy of fair dealing is maintained in the future, and to this end all groups must devote their best efforts. Everyone in town is having a good laugh at the expense of Doc Kertsen this week. Doc proved his ability to "get out from under" last Monday night—that is after the lights were turned on following "the shooting". Understand that Tex Middleton has been approached by a movie magnate with a contract if he will just show how he got out of his shoes without untying the laces. Also understand that one of the universities has offered Charley Eaton a place on the track coaches staff to coach the mile-a-minute men. Imagine Doc Kersten's surprise though, when he found that Ken Peck had beaten him to a place under the bench. Ken was sitting in the front row in the hall and Doc was sitting on the bench but...well...Ken got there first. The shooting scrape was not without its hero, however. Had it not been for some of the members occupying a re-der what the significance could be or should I say inference... When the lights were finally turned on again, Jimmy Heffron was seen calmly sitting at his desk writing up the minutes of the meeting, while Commander Earl Fulfer, stood at his station...the only sign of disturbance he showed was that he had a mop instead of his gavel. Yeah...It proved a thrill. INSTANT blade change The Schick INJECTOR Razor gives you a new convenience in shaving. Mrs. Emily Freeman, manager, today urged patrons to make early reservations to avoid disappointment in obtaining the best locations for the remaining performances. The natural beauty of the Ramona Bowl, alive with wildflowers, the spectacular vistas from the amphitheatre of snow-crowned peaks in the distance, the brilliant new costumes of the players and the stellar performance of the idyllic love story of the Indian maid by the cast of 200 all have contributed to make the 1935 presentations outstanding in the twelve years the play has been produced, in the opinion of annual visitors. Schools, churches, chambers of commerce, clubs, fraternal and patriotic organizations all have sent huge delegations to view the colorful play in groups. Saturday the San Bernardino High School, Deaumont High, Spanish classes from the Pasadena schools and the Colton Union High students all will occupy large blocks of seats in the bowl. Gorgeous rancheria flestas of the days of the dons, thrilling episodes in which Southern California's finest saddle horses are seen pursuing the villain of the play at break-neck speed, quaint Indian ceremonials of Ramona's day, and other spectacular features enliven one of the most dramatic love sagas ever written. Victor Jory, famed stage and secern star, as the Indian hero, and Jean Inness, former New York actress, in the title role, are supported by more than a score of principals with speaking parts in unfolding the poignant story of undying devotion. Such was the enthusiastic reception of rollicking street flestas with public dancing staged in Hemet and San Jacinto the first two Saturday performances that the management is planning a final crowning festivity on Saturday night, May 11, in Hemet to entertain visitors here for the pageant. Many choice seats are still available for the final performances. Reservations may be made at Lloyd Mitchell boxoffices throughout Southern California, or by writing or phoning the Ramona Pageant Association at Hemet. The bowl seats 6,000 with 3,000 reserved seats.
