SERA REMOVES 900 FROM RELIEF ROLLS AFTER PROTEST BY AGRICULTURISTS (Continued from page 1) to SERA rolls providing that: 3. Every honest effort has been exercised by the worker to secure a job and that by the class of work he performs he demonstrates every effort to hold same. The provision for a minimum earning wage was made to insure that the agricultural workers will receive a living wage. Out of the mass meeting of farmers a committee consisting of C. L. McComber, sugar beets; V. C. Hell, lima beans; Jack Crill, citrus and walnuts; Wendell Hell, vegetables, H. C. Bohlander, hay and grain, R. D. Flaherty, secretary of the Farm Bureau, commodities at large, and Supervisor Jerome, representative at large, was chosen to meet with the SERA committee. Nearing Normal Flaherty pointed out that the price received by agriculturists for their products determines the wages they are able to pay for labor. Supervisor Jerome said that Orange county is nearer normal today in every respect than at any time in the history of the county. Lewis, speaking before the committee, deplored the fact that apparently the morale of agricultural workers has been broken by giving them relief to such an extent that they prefer to be on relief rather than working in private industry to support themselves. This is a matter which must be corrected, he said. Farmers said this was caused by paying a higher wage scale for relief work than agriculture could afford to pay. The release of the agricultural workers will drop the case load of relief workers on SERA here to below 3000 for the first time since the case load started mounting upward. Those on work relief now number 3700, as compared with 4900 in February, which shows that many have been leaving the relief rolls voluntarily to obtain work in private fields. Draws 50 Days For Drunk Driving Again the mixture of gasoline and barley corn were found to produce a net result of a jail sentence when R. E. Taylor, 432 West Chapman street, Orange pleaded guilty last Friday morning before Judge Frank Tausch of the Anaheim police court and was sentenced to pay a fine of $100 or spend the next 50 days in jail. Taylor, with a passenger, L. E. Cobb were picked up Thursday night, the well, I'll feel somewhat safe in Orange from now on. Last Monday night, when wondering just where to wile away a few minutes of the evening, was taken to a meeting of the Cheminot (executive committee) of the Orange County Volteur, 40 and 8, and there met the illustrious chief of police, George Franzen of Orange. He's just a regular fellow and boy does he like his unmm—whaddayacallums? ? ?—ummm, oh, yeah, scallops. George had his special partner "Wag" Wegner from Orange . . . Just like a cop always have someone handy to blame things on. Sure thre were a lot of other good fellas there too . . . but Ray Smith didn't get over. . . Nearly forgot to tell you . . . the meeting was at Balboa By the Sea, or some such name . . . and the feed was at Guzz'zz plaze. . . Even had a police escort going over so very carefully stopped at all stop signs—nearly. Roger Sherman was my special guide and I enjoyed every scallop of the evening. . . Quite a discussion was held at the meeting relative to just how a certain letter should have been written. It seems a committee had the task of arranging for a room at the coming Fresno Convention of the State Department of the Legion. The reply to their reservation stated that the room arranged for was in a small hotel and did not have a connected bath. . . Now the problem facing the committee was the wording of a letter demanding this modern convenience . . thus . . should the committee say "We need a bath" or "we want a bath" . . well, to stop all argument it was decided to go "without a bath." tsk! tsk! Then there was some discussion about 500 CLUB HOLDS. SURPRISE PARTY The 500 Club surprised Mrs. Joseph Carroll Tuesday afternoon when they met at her beautiful new home on Lincoln avenue. The members carried delectable refreshments with them and a delightful afternoon was spent in cards and sewing. A wall mirror was presented to the honoree by the members of the club as a token of esteem. The Monterey style house on the magnificent Carroll orange grove is a complete and beautiful home and a notable addition to this section. Five Hurt In Two Auto Accidents Fri. Two accidents the latter part of last week resulted in five being hurt and treated in the hospitals of the county. Gus Mata, Route 1, Anaheim was treated at the county hospital following a collision with a machine driven by Leland W. Davy of Fullerton at a street intersection in Santa Ana last Friday afternoon. He was suffering from a fractured collar bone and a possible concussion. Davy escaped with minor injuries. Mrs. Delpha Breece of 272 South Grand, Orange, received severe lacerations about the face, cuts, and bruises, last Friday morning about 7 o'clock when the car in which she was riding, driven by John Underwood, struck the car of C. M. Pannell as Pannell was driving from his garage into the street at Eighth and King streets, Santa Ana. Wayne Breece, 9, received a painful cut on the chin, and was sent home after receiving first aid treatment at the county hospital. Underwood and Pannell escaped with bruises. No one was injured when an auto- Again the mixture of gasoline and barley corn were found to produce a net result of a jail sentence when R. E. Taylor, with a passenger, L. E. Cobb were picked up Thursday night, the latter being booked at the station on a drunkenness charge. Cobb also pleaded not guilty and demanded a jury trial. The date was set by Judge Tausch for May 22 at 2 p.m. He was placed under bail of $150 which he could not produce and was remanded to the county jail pending his trial. Taylor chose to spend the next 50 days in jail. MESA GROUP SEES QUICK HAND LORE Floyd Stewart of Santa Ana was the featured performer at the meeting of the Costa Mesa Men's Brotherhood last Tuesday night. Miss Jackie Ballou was also on the program with some accordion music. Of course with a couple policemen in the crowd the Chef de Gare (that's the chairman) felt perfectly safe but kept the gavel in his hip pocket except when he wanted to use it...and then he took a death grip on it. Just got it back from the meeting before last he said, and was merely trying to keep the thing from going on another trip to the mountains or something... Well, we left before the meeting was entirely over and he still had the gavel, so if it shows up missing this time probably the folk at Orange will have a visitor this week or next. Never can tell. Program Committee Appointed By Prorate The program committee appointed for Lemon Proration Zone No. 1 to regulate the movement to market of the California lemon crop, has selected W. S. Shippey, as zone agent, to manage the program, according to Edson Abel, Secretary, Agricultural Prorate Commission. Offices have been established at 804 Bendix Building, 12th and Maple Streets, Los Angeles. All lemon shippers should immediately register themselves with the zone agent in order to secure their prorates from the start of the program.
