Control of Citrus Disease Explained
The prevalence of copious moisture conditions in the citrus orchard during the past winter and spring months has caused a greater than usual gummosis infection on the trunk and roots of citrus trees, according to farm Advisor Harold E. Wahlberg. The more general use of sweet root stock has had a tendency to aggravate the number of infections because of the greater susceptibility of this strain of rootstock.
Orchardists should inspect their orchards often during the wet season and carefully observe if any gumming is appearing on the trunk of the tree near the ground level, for this is the time that brown rot fummels may develop.
The best way to control the disease is by early treatment before the area becomes too large. The early surgical disinfectant treatment gives excellent control if carefully carried out. The disease is treated by cutting away the invaded, killed, bark and painting the wound with a good fungicide such as permanganite of potash. Exposed portions of the wood should be painted with an asphalt paint after the edges of the cut area begin to heal up. Trees severely affected should be pruned back or the tops thinned out, says Wahlberg.
Usually the disease can be prevented by keeping the soil pulled away from the base of the tree trunk. Care should be taken to keep the soil next to the trunk fairly dry, especially while irrigating. Excessive moisture in this area will encourage gummosis.
Young trees may be prevented from being infected by sprinkling a Bordeaux dust around the base of the tree for a few inches on the soil, some of it touching the trunk of the tree itself.
Orchardists should not confuse the gumming due to brown rot gummosis with the gumming due to scaly bark,
San Jacinto To Hold Fiesta Marsh Opening of Second Performance
HEMET, May 1:—Inspired by the enthusiastic reception accorded the first two performances of the spectacular Ramona Pageant, residents of this city and San Jacinto are completing elaborate preparations to entertain even greater throngs for this weekend's presentations. Performances will be staged in the picturesque Ramona Bowl here Saturday and Sunday afternoons, May 4 and 5, and on May 11 and 12.
San Jacinto is scheduled to do the honors in reviving early California hospitality to visitors with a colorful street flesta to be staged Saturday evening following the third pageant presentation that afternoon. Colorful dances of the days of the dons will be demonstrated by experts, with visitors invited to participate, and the favorite folk songs of Ramona's day will be played and sung by soloists and ensembles.
The 1935 presentations are pronounced by many spectators who have not missed an annual showing of the play since its inception in 1923 as the finest yet from the standpoint both of individual acting and smoothness of presentation. The verdure clad bowl is more beautiful than ever before because

Platt Produce Co. Loses State Permit
Platt Produce Company, a well known produce distributing concern operated for many years in Los Angeles by Jack Beaton, lost its license to do business in California a few days ago when the State permit to act as Dealer was revoked by C. J. Carey, chief of the Division of Market Enforcement, State Department of Agriculture.
Department records, according to Carey, indicate a series of grower’s complaints as filed against Beaton for a considerable period. On one previous occasion a license was suspended, but when new complaints were filed and were not adjusted after several extensions, the order of cancellation followed.
"It is with considerable regret," stated Carey, "that we feel that Platt Produce Company must forfeit its right to its permit to act as a wholesale produce distributor in California, but an extremely unsatisfactory complaint record, with many unsatisfied claims, makes such action mandatory under the Produce Dealers Act. The law is conceived to permit only those of financial integrity to engage in the wholesale produce business, and demands that persons in that business be qualified to meet the commitments to growers. We feel that every opportunity has been given Mr. Beaton during the last 18 months, but unsatisfied complaints and admitted indebtedness to growers gives us no alternative to the cancellation ordered."

Suggests Optimism
That fear of dire happenings in the future most of which, based on past experiences, never happen, is one of the principal things wrong with America today was the statement of Walter S. Gifford, president of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, at the celebration of the 50th anniversary of that organization. Mr. Gifford recalled the spirit of enthusiasm and optimism during war times when the American people were "trying to see how the impossible could be and was done" as the type of spirit that assures our country of getting out of its present difficulties. He decried the tendency toward pessimism and fear now predominated.
Coming from the head of the world’s largest private organization, this statement carried added weight when it is considered that during the early days of the depression telephone executives were among the few who refused to become enanarled in the type of optimistic statements so prevalent among business leaders in 1930 and 1931. Mr. Gifford was not one in those days to say that "prosperity was just around the corner" and his current statement to the effect that we should not be fearful of the future is worthy of added recognition on that account.
In speaking of the Bell System Gifford commented as follows:
"The American Telephone and Telegraph Company is fifty years old. It has become a great American institution. It is owned by you and your neighbors in every state in the union. It belongs to 'Main Street.' More than half of its nearly 700,000 stockholders are women.
"Its nation-wide organization, existing in substantially the same form for half a century, makes possible telephone service as we know it today. A telephone call is so easy to make that the person making the call has no idea of the complicated physical equipment and the vast organization of workers behind it. Now, it obviously does not just happen that practically anyone anywhere, any time can talk promptly with anyone else, anywhere in this country — or for that matter almost anywhere in the world. Nor does it just happen that the number of telephones per hundred of population in the United States is more than sixteen times the average of that for the rest of the world and is nearly 50 per cent higher than in any country in Europe. It is the result of the free play of individual initiative and ability fostered thoughtfully courteous day activities. They are ‘get the message through’.
“In the Telephone policy and our method based on the long pull brating one 50 years at the next. Practically the telephone and most in the business is the people and most of them done by people who decide to it.”
"We shall continue further improve telephone make it more economical. We shall continue to tell Bell System an attraction for people to work in our vestors. Above all, we strive to merit the good esteem of our fellow keep the American Telephone Company an institute American people can be...

"Everlasting Punishment" is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon on Sunday in all branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass.
One of the Bible selections in the Lesson-Sermon includes the verses from Matthew: "And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed; and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins. (then saith he to the sick of the palsy.) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. And he arose, and departed to his house."
The Lesson-Sermon presents also these passages from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker, Eddy: "Jesus healed sickness and sin by one and the same metaphysical process." "Both cures require the same method and are inseparable in Truth."
