Prepared Orange Juice Is Equal To Fresh, Claim
Scientists Find Vitamin C Content Varies Little During Tests
Do you prefer your orange juice fresh or canned? Science has discovered that it is now largely a matter of personal preference as the vitamin C content of both fresh and commercially prepared orange juice is practically the same.
Tests have recently been completed to determine the effect of carbon dioxide and sodium benzoate on the vitamin C content of orange juice. Vitamin C is the essential scurvy preventing vitamin, and there has been some question as to whether or not modern preserving methods did not destroy some of the value of orange juice in this important use.
The tests conducted on guinea pigs showed that no difference can be observed as to the amount of vitamin C present in valencia and navel oranges, and that the use of carbon dioxide and sodium benzoate in preserving processes does not decrease the amount of the antiscorbutic vitamin to any appreciable degree. Orange juice which has been diluted and to which sugar had been added to form orangeade retains at least two-thirds of its original vitamin value and even after pasteurization, the juice is equivalent in vitamin content to freshly squeezed oranges.

Duck Hunters To Need 2 Licenses For Short Season
Shooting Allowed On Saturday and Sunday Only, From Oct. 20 to Dec. 30
With the duck season opening October 20, the three offices of the state fish and game commission are receiving many inquiries regarding the shooting days, bag and possession limits, species that can be legally taken, and baiting of ponds.
The season and bag limits on migratory waterfowl have been fixed by the U.S. biological survey, which has given each state the privilege of 30 shooting days, to be taken between October 1 and January 15. The California fish and game commission elected to start the season October 29 at sunrise and close at sunset December 30, shooting days to be Saturday and Sundays.
All hunters must have a state hunting license and purchase a federal waterfowl stamp, which may be obtained at any post office in a city of 2,500 or more population. This stamp is to be placed on the state hunting license.
Bag and possession limits are 25 mudhens; 20 jacksnipes. Snipes may be legally hunted only on such days as duck shooting is permitted. The bag limit on geese or brant is four, with a possession limit of 8.
The bag limit on ducks is 12 with a possession of 24. Not more than 5 of any one, or of the aggregate of the following species may be included in a bag limit: canvas back, redhead, lesser or great scaup, ringneck, green-winged, blue-winged or cinnamon teal, shoveller or gadwall. Not more than ten in the aggregate of these species may be possessed at any one time.
There is no open season in this state on Ross geese, wood ruddy and buffle-head ducks, nor can shore birds be lawfully killed, with the exception of jacksnipes.
Not more than 25 live duck decoys may be used, and no live goose decoys are permitted.
The shooting day is from sunrise to sunset, except on premises that have baited ponds when shooting must cease.

Three of the 80 carloads of valencias shipped this week by the Central Orange County Citrus Exchange were destined for foreign ports, the balance to domestic markets.
There is no open season in this state on Ross geese, wood ruddy and bufflehead ducks, nor can shore birds be lawfully killed, with the exception of jacksnippe.
Not more than 25 live duck decoys may be used, and no live goose decoys are permitted.
The shooting day is from sunrise to sunset, except on premises that have baited ponds when shooting must cease at 3 p.m.
Permission to bait ponds must be obtained from the U. S. Biological Survey at Washington, D. C.
Blinds on commercial clubs must not be less than 80 yards apart and not more than two hunters shall occupy one blind.
It is unlawful to shoot game from a power boat, sail boat, automobile or airplane. It is not legal to possess an extension or cane gun, and hunters must not use a gun larger than 10 guage.
Hundreds of federal game wardens will cooperate with state game wardens to enforce the migratory waterfowl game laws, and especial attention will be concentrated on all duck areas to see the laws are observed.
California, instead of taking the full 30 days allowed by the biological survey, cut the season in this state to 11 weeks of two days each. Saturdays and Sundays. Many hunters have asked why the open days were not a weekend with a mid-week day. The federal law especially sets forth that all shooting days must be consecutive and must be the same for each week the season is open. After conferring with sportsmen, the commission selected Saturdays and Sundays as the days that would please the most people.

BANK LOAN SURVEY WELCOMED BY BUSINESS; SURPRISES PREDICTED AS PROBERS DIG THROUGH FILES
"Usury Racket" Is Charged Against Banks That Insist Upon Written Agreement To Retain 20 Per Cent Balance of Loan, Though Total Draws Regular Interest Rate, Earns 17½%
Uncle Sam's program to learn what is jamming the nation's credit machinery is quite likely to uncover some surprising banking practices. Such is the opinion of some business men who come under the classification of those designated to be included in the treasury department's survey.
The treasury survey is to get from the bank files 2,000 most recent cases of small business men who have been refused credit, 20 cases from 100 banks, also, field workers are to obtain from private business men themselves, another 2,000 cases of refusals of banks to lend them money, making 4,000 cases in all.
This survey by the treasury department is being conducted in the Chicago federal reserve area which comprises Iowa, Michigan, Northern Illinois and Indiana and Southern Wisconsin. The findings are expected to illustrate the entire national situation.
The program mapped out by Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morganman, Jr., to his chief research expert, Prof. Jacob Viner, is to find out why the vast stores of credit are lying idle in banks while business claims they cannot find financing.
Charge Usury Practice
All of this activity by Uncle Sam in searching for the monkey wrench in credit machinery is creating no end of discussion. Reports from different sections indicate that businessmen, some large, some small, have many axes to mind... even including the charge that usury is now being practiced by banks in some districts.
One case in point is ably presented by a keen business man in an eastern state. He terms it "the banker's new usury racket," not only illegal but subject to drastic punishment in many commonwealths. He cites laws wherein parties found guilty of practicing usury, because they bankers or small-fry money lenders, may be forced to face penalties ranging from repayment of all illegal interest rates, to complete cancellation of the entire debt or loan.
Wherein the charge is made that the usury racket is now being practiced by some banks, pertains to the general clapsed since the recordation of said notice. The amount of $1693.85 principal and interest and all other sums secured by said deed of trust, are now due, owing and unpaid on said note and there is also secured by said Deed of Trust the Trustee's fee and expenses of sale, estimated at $158.00 together with $46.78, paid and advanced by the owner of said note in accordance with the provisions of said Deed of Trust, with interest on said last mentioned sum.
NOW THEREFORE, NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the said Orange County Title Company, by virtue of the authority vested in it as Trustee under said Deed of Trust, will sell at public auction, to the highest bidder for cash, lawful money of the United States, on the 5th day of November, 1934, at the hour of eleven o'clock A.M., of said day at the North entrance of the Hall of Records in the City of Santa Ana, California, all of the interest conveyed to it by said Deed of Trust in and to all the following described property situated in the City of Anaheim, County of Orange, State of California, described as follows, to-wit:
The Westerly 104 feet of Lot Ninety-one (91) in Block "G" of Helmann and George's Addition Building-Lots, as shown on a Map recorded in Book 2, page 249 of Miscellaneous Records of Los Angeles County, California.

G. B. Bicyclists May Face Taxation
So many bicycle riders are taking advantage of the fine British roads that an organized effort is being made in Great Britain to place them under a registration and license system.
It is estimated that there are 10,000,000 bicycles using the roads throughout Great Britain. It is the opinion of a large section of the British motoring public that some part of the burden of road maintenance should be borne by bicycle owners.
borrower to maintain on deposit a 20% cash balance of the loan, it now is the practice of some banks to "write-in" this agreement on the loan notes, thus making it a matter of record.
The above is but one of the many axes which business men in cities, towns and villages have to grind with the banker. All of which the treasury department field workers, under Mr. Viner, may find if they dig deep enough, so say some business men in talks which have been "off the record"—but poured into ears of those who will listen by those in dire need of honest and fair credit.
