Brilliant Horse Show at Big Fair
The brilliant society horse show, an outstanding feature of the combined Los Angeles, Riverside and Orange County Fair in Pomona, September 15 to 24, and one that has already attracted national and international attention, will again see a notable array of equine aristocracy on parade. A total of $20,000 will be paid out in premiums. There will be a horse show every night during the ten days of the fair and during that time 70 classes will be shown. There are 12 $500 stakes including the fine harness horses, roadsters, harness horses, harness ponies, three-gaited saddle horses, hunters, jumpers, stock horses, Shetlands and heavy draft horses.
Large entries are the feature of every class. The heavy draft horses, always popular with the audience, will again be seen in four, six and eight horse hitches. All of the lading show horse stables will be represented among the entries.
Traffic Officer Says Parents Must Stress Safety Measures for Lists Nine Points Parents Should Impress Us Effort to Prevent Accidents; Claims Careless Offsets Safety Rules Taught at School; As Parents must co-operate with traffic officers, motor maximum results in protecting school children from accidents to be obtained. State Traffic Officer George Peterkin failure of parents to back up safety taught at school for that carelessness at home mitigates against safety points Officer Peterkin emphasizes are:
1. The tots just commencing their school careers should be accompanied to school for a few days by the parent, until they become used to traffic and familiar with the different hazards encountered on the way.
2. Pick a definite route and insist that the children follow that route every day. Also instruct them as to actions at crossings.
3. Use of roller skates or scooters on the way to school should be forbidden. As well let them carry loaded shotguns.
4. Never, NEVER, give the child the idea that cars must stop for him at pedestrian crossings. That may be the law but it isn't safety. Mothers should not take their children to the curb and then "shoo" them across the street on the run. Take the child across and teach it never to cross the street on the run, but to wait until the crossing can be made in safety at a walk. Teach the child not to cross if cars are near.
5. Where there are no sidewalks or curbs the child must walk on the left-hand side of the road, and although the law gives pedestrians the right to use the pavement, teach the children that the only safe place is on the shoulder of the road, out of the path of cars.
6. Older persons, in riding bicycles are setting a wrong example for the children by riding on the left hand side of the highway. While that is the proper side for pedestrians a bicycle is

6. Older persons, in riding bicycles are setting a wrong example for the children by riding on the left hand side of the highway. While that is the proper side for pedestrians, a bicycle is a vehicle and must travel in the right-hand side, as do other vehicles. If riding at night, lights must be used. Flashlights will do, if continuously burning while the bicycle is in motion.
7. Teach the children to avoid strangers and not to beg or accept rides with strangers. Degenerates are making a practice of waylaying school children.
8. To repeat, teach children not to run across crossings. Investigation of accidents in the county show that this is the greatest cause of accidents to children.
9. To motorists: When meeting a school bus that has stopped for the purpose of loading or discharging children, the motorist must bring his car to a stop. Do not make the mistake of failing to stop, even though the bus is on the opposite of the highway and headed toward you. The direction or side of the street makes no difference. Several children were very badly injured last year by motorists who knew the children were getting on or off of busses but did not think they had to stop. Arrests and convictions followed in every case.
Discussing the instruction of children as to their conduct on the way to and from school, Peterkin commented that "traffic of today is an adult problem, so do not expect the impossible from a child. Strict insistence by parents upon observation of safety rules is important. It has been my observation that fine teaching of safety by the schools has been in many cases nullified by slackness at home. For real results, the parents must back the teachers.
"Bus drivers are under strict supervision and are periodically inspected, so parents need not worry about safety on the bus, other than the acts of the public.
"The careless action of any children on busses or the bus driver should be promptly reported. Persons residing near the schools can assist by watching and reporting violations of the rules."
Juvenile Home Table Is Run at a Low Cost
Superintendent C. E. Redmond of the county juvenile home last week announced that the average cost can be made in safety at a walk. Teach the child not to cross if cars are near.

Juvenile Home Table Is Run at a Low Cost
Superintendent C. E. Redmond of the county juvenile home last week announced that the average cost per meal at his institution is seven cents.
During August 1762 meals were served to 56 inmates and 465 meals to five employees, the report shows.
The total salary bill for August was $353.70.
Five gallons of honey was purchased for $4 and the telephone for August cost $8.50, the report shows.
Twenty-four tooth brushes and 24 combs were purchased from the F. W. Woolworth store for $4.92, which included 12 cents sales tax.

Unlike the beer situation when a bowl of pretzels is passing for the necessary "meal" to accompany the brew, the new statute imposes a definite description of a meal. A meal, in the verbiage of the legislature's act, is: "That quantity of food of such nature as is ordinarily consumed by an individual at regular intervals for the purposes of sustenance."
Brewers Are Curbed
Control of beer establishments by brewers is forbidden in the act as an effort to prevent the collusion between manufacturers and distributors. It is provided further that no person having any interest in a brewery, distillery or liquor importing company would be allowed to have any interest in an "on sale" establishment or where liquors are consumed.
Cities and counties would receive semi-annually 60 per cent of the revenues derived from the act after deduction of administrative expenses.
Johnstons Hosts at Delightful Affair
Two hundred and five members of the Co-Workers' class of the First Presbyterian church were guests Friday afternoon and evening at a delightful covered-dish party at the home of Dr. and Mrs. H. A. Johnston on South Los Angeles street. Dr. Johnston is teacher of the class.
Invited for an afternoon of swimming and other sports, women of the class were joined at 6 o'clock by their husbands for an elaborate covered-dish supper served at long tables in the patio. The menu and other arrangements for the meal were in charge of a committee comprising Mrs. Floyd McCracken, Mrs. J. W. McLauchlin and Mrs. Louis Fisher, who were assisted in serving by Holly Markle, Ben Stroup, Earl Phillips and the president of the class, Milo C. Sharp.
The entire evening was spent most informally. During the supper hour, Mr. Sharp extended an invitation to guests of the class for this occasion to attend a series of special lectures which Dr. Johnston will give the next four Sundays at the regular class sessions at 9:30 o'clock in the Presbyterian church.
A variety of lawn sports, including ping pong, miniature golf, croquet, tennis and horseshoes brought the affair to a happy conclusion. Additional enjoyment was afforded the players by an organ concert which was transmitted to the grounds from the drawing room of the residence.

Furrowing To Be Feature of Fair
Proper Methods of Irrigation Correct Many Diseases and Poor Crops
Methods of furrowing and irrigation set-up will be the feature of the agricultural extension service booth at the Pomona Fair, which opens September 15 at Pomona, according to announcement from the farm advisor's office.
Citrus, walnut and truck crop irrigation methods will be designed and laid out on a small scale for the purpose of showing growers some of the faults which can easily develop as a result of too long irrigation furrows, poor leveling for truck crop or for tree crops, wrong pipe line locations, etc. Different types of soil require different treatment. These faulty practices and adverse natural conditions can be cared for by properly laying out the irrigation system before plaining takes place.
Many of the diseases and failure to produce properly in orchards is a result of improper irrigation practice. Much faulty irrigation practice is the direct result of failure to understand the real purpose of irrigation.
Soil profiles will be available behind plate glass to show water penetration and to provide examples of field conditions, making necessary certain modifications of the irrigation method. This exhibit will be located with other county exhibits on the second floor of the new grandstand building.
The Los Angeles fair management has invited Farm Advisor Harold E. Wahlberg to judge citrus feature and community exhibits on the opening day, Friday, September 15. M. Eastman assistant farm advisor, will judge the vegetable section.

State Chamber Urges Director of Conservation to Boost Number of State Posts
Establishment of 107 new Civilian Conservation Corps camps in California during the coming winter months, increasing the total number of these camps to 280, was strongly urged by the California State Chamber of Commerce before the director of emergency conservation work and other officials at Washington.
Recommendations for the establishment of additional camps have been submitted to Washington officials by General Malin Craig, commander of the ninth corps area, and by Regional Forester S. B. Show of the United States forest service. The plan calls for establishment of 169 forest service camps and 111 state division of forestry camps. All of the state camps and 62 of the 128 national forest camps now in operation are to be continued.
Many of the camps in the northwest and middlewest will have to be discontinued during the winter months because of weather conditions, but the activity in California, and particularly Southern California, can be continued throughout the winter. An analysis of the expenditures for equipment and supplies, made by the state chamber, show that continuance of these camps for an 18 months period will result in the expenditure of at least $36,000,000 in California by the federal government, resulting in much real benefit to California's economic life. During the 18 months period a program of forest improvement and fire prevention, originally estimated as requiring ten years to complete, will be practically finished.

Orchard Heater Smoke Measured
Conducts Series of Tests In Southern California to Show How to Decrease Smoke
An apparatus whereby the smoke generated by an orchard heater may be accurately measured, is announced by Prof. H. B. Walker. The apparatus was constructed by members of the agricultural engineering division.
A filter, made of white cloth, is used to catch the smoke as it comes from a heater. The filter then is placed in the apparatus, where a photo-voltaic cell measures on a micro-ammeter the exact amount of the smoke, as the reflection from the cloth on the cell generates electricity in proportion to the amount of light. Field tests have demonstrated that the machine works well.
Series of Demonstrations
To show growers who use orchard heaters how the apparatus works, and how they may lessen the smoke generated, a series of demonstrations will be held in southern California during September and October. In these demonstrations, it will be shown that in several makes of heaters, closing certain louvers with a hammer will reduce the smoke.
The dates of the demonstrations arranged at this time are: San Fernando, September 19; Citrus Experiment Station, Riverside, September 20; Arlington, September 21; Rivera, September 22; North Whittier Heights, September 23; Covina, September 25; Pomona, September 26; Narod, September 27; Upland, September 28; Redlands, September 29.
Demonstrations also will be held in Orange and Ventura counties, but dates have not been set as yet.
Kress Store Head Arrested Monday
G. A. Kell, resident manager for the Kress company, appears Friday morning in Justice Charles Kuchel's court to answer charges of violating the state pharmacy act on complaint filed by Inspector H. F. Dowdy, who states that he and another inspector on three separate occasions on or about August 28 purchased aspirin from Miss Marjorie Greenside, clerk, who is not a registered pharmacist or registered pharmacist's assistant. Kell was arrested Monday and arrhigned before Judge Kuchel Tuesday morning but his case was deferred to permit him to consult an attorney. The complaint also accuses General Manager J. C. Escar and Miss Greenside.
Wake Up Your Liver Bile – Without Calomel
And You'll Jump Out of Bed in the Morning Rarin' to Go
If you feel sour and sunk and the world looks punk, don't swallow a lot of salts, mineral water, oil, laxative candy or chewing gum and expect them to make you suddenly sweet and buoyant and full of sunshine.
For they can't do it. They only move the bowels and a mere movement doesn't get at the cause. The reason for your down-and-out feeling is your liver. It should pour out two pounds of liquid bile into your bowels daily.
If this bile is not flowing freely, your food doesn't digest. It just decays in the bowels. Gas bloats up your stomach. You have a thick, bad taste and your breath is foul, skin often breaks out in blemishes. Your head aches and you feel down and out. Your whole system is poisoned.
It takes those good, old CARTER'S LITTLE LIVER PILLS to get these two pounds of bile flowing freely and make you feel "up and up." They contain wonderful, harmless, gentle vegetable extracts, amazing when it comes to making the bile flow freely.
But don't ask for liver pills. Ask for Carter's Little Liver Pills. Look for the name Carter's Little Liver Pills on the red label. Resent a substitute. 25c at drug stores. ©1931 C. M. Co.

Valley Boulevard Officially Named
Valley boulevard has been officially designated as such from its source near Lincoln Park to El Monte, thus eliminating the confusion to which motorists have been subject. Eventually, it is reported, this name may apply throughout its entire length, the name Pomona boulevard being reserved for another thoroughfare. Valley boulevard, Alhambra avenue, Main street and Pomona boulevard have heretofore been applied between Lincoln Park and Pomona.
Slow Speed Urged Near School Zones
Reduced speed and careful driving by motorists when near schools are the objects of a statewide campaign this month by the California committee on public safety. "School Zones Are As Safe As You Make Them" is the slogan suggested for drivers.
In announcing the campaign, the committee points out that opening of schools for the fall term brings a multitude of pupils back to classrooms. With throngs of children on or near streets at intervals during the day, a condition exists that places an obligation upon all motorists to drive cautiously.
The committee further emphasizes that many thousands of younger children are making their way to and from schools and traversing traffic unattended for the first time in their lives.
