Watersheds Hit by Forest Fires
Careless Smokers Cause Most of Damage; Hazardous Areas Now Closed to Travelers
Nearly "one grand" of fires and one fire that was not so grand for the water users of southern California were charged to careless smokers in 1932 by Regional Forester S. L. Showe as he issued an order closing all national forests in California to smoking. Nine hundred and ninety-nine fires were caused last year by the careless throwing of lighted matches and burning tobacco in the dry litter of the forest and in the dry grass and grain fields of the State. The Matilija fire of last September which burned over 219,000 acres of watershed on the Santa Barbara forest is one of the results of thoughtlessness on the part of those who travel the mountains in the hot dry summer. In all national forests smoking is allowed at "Flying Stations" established along roads and trails for the convenience of smokers and at camps and places of habitation, according to Show.
Travelers in the national forests should note that auto and pack train parties camping in the national forests must have a shovel and ax before they can obtain a camp fire permit, and that hazardous areas and roads are now being closed to use and travel on account of the approaching fire danger season. On the Mendocino forest the Erickson windfall area is closed to all use except under permit from the forest service and the Brushy camp road is closed to travel. Blue canyon on the Sierra forest is closed to all use and the Ralston divide road on the Eldorado forest is closed to travel.

Spinner, 3-feet of Line Laden Trout
Captain of Game Wardens, J. D. Dondero of Lake county, reports to the state-fish and game commission that on May 26th he hooked, on a spinner, an 18-inch steelhead trout in Pillsbury Lake. On examining this fish he found it was one of 50 he marked in August, 1930, and liberated in Soda Creek. When this fish was marked it was four inches long. When caught last month it was 18-inches long and weighed three pounds. As Dondero brought the steelhead out of the lake he found a spinner and three feet of leader line snagged in the fish's mouth.
How often we all day-dream of some time journeying to far-away lands. And how seldom we Californians realize that right here at home are sights and fun of the kind we dream about!
When we stop to think of it—why, here all around us are thrilling wonders all the world comes to see. Ours to see now at little cost, with no need to save and wait.
Each of us could question himself—"Have I ever felt the spell of Yosemite; seen its high, misty falls; marveled at its mass of towering granite? Have I watched the long, graceful firefall dropping from on high through the blue summer night to the floor of the valley?"
"Have I lingered in the silence of redwood giants, centuries old, watching the sunlight filter down as through great cathedral windows?"
"Have I lived so near all these years and never strolled the streets of California's ghost towns where one may capture again the very spirit of '49?"

SIMPLICITY AND STRENGTH
Jesus hated prosy dullness. He praised the Centurion who was anxious not to waste his time; the only prayer which He publicly commended was uttered by a poor publican who merely cried out, "God, be merciful to me a sinner." A seven word prayer, Jesus called it a good one. A sixty-eight word prayer. He said, contained all that men needed to say or God to hear. What would be His verdict on most of our prayers and our speeches and our advertisements?
Jesus' language was marvelously simple—a second great essential. There is hardly a sentence in His teaching which a child can not understand. His illustrations were all drawn from the commonest experiences of life; "a sower went forth to sow"; "a certain man had two sons"; "a man built his house on the sands"; "the kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed."
The absence of adjectives is striking. Ward Beecher said once that "to a large extent adjectives are like leaves on a switch; they made it look pretty, as a branch, but they prevent it striking tinglingly when you use it.
"I recollect a case in which my father at a public meeting was appointed to draw up an article," Beecher continued. "He had written one sentence: 'It is wrong.' Some one in the meeting got up and moved in his enthusiasm that the sentence read: 'It is exceedingly wrong.' My father got up and said in his mild way, "When I was writing out this resolution in its original shape that was the way I wrote it, but to make it stronger, I took out the 'exceedingly.' Jesus used few qualifying words and no long ones. We refer to those three literary masterpieces, The Lord's Prayer, The Twenty-Third Psalm, The Gettysburg Address. Recall their phraseology:
Our Father which art in Heaven hallowed be thy name.
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Four score and seven years ago.
Not a single three-syllable word; hardly any two-syllable words. All the greatest things in human life are one-syllable things—love, joy, hope, home, child, wife, trust, faith, God—and the great advertisements generally speaking, are those in which the most small words are found.

Seeks Reports On Temblor Damages
Persons whose property was damaged $150 or more by the earthquake are urged to get in touch with County Assessor James Sleeper immediately in order to take advantage of possible leniency in appraisals, which may be authorized by the voters on June 27.
Blank forms on which owners of temblor-damaged property may state their damages may be secured from Sleeper. These reports must be made in order that they will be completed before the board of supervisors sits as a board of equalization, finishing its job by law on July 17.
