Resolved that trustees as a unit meet Fuerte Avocado Leads Varieties The Fuerte avocado continues to head the list for commercial varieties, according to the avocado variety committee of the California Avocado association, which has just reported to Austin Marshburn, chairman of the farm bureau avocado department. The Nabal and Benik are listed as candidates for commercial rating and are varieties of approved merit for coast and foothill districts. The variety committee has suggested a list of varieties most hardy to cold. They are the Benedict, Duke, Fuerte, and Puebla. It is noted in the report that the Fuerte represents more than half of all the fruit delivered to the Calavo Growers association during the past year, and as young plantings, which are largely Fuerte, come into bearing a further increase in percentage of Fuerte is expected within the next few years. The difficulty with the Puebla which the committee reports is that it "cut dark" in the fall of 1931. This did not recur in 1932, the crop being harvested in normal condition. The committee believes that the trouble in 1931 was due to the peculiar weather conditions occurring at that time. The variety committee also recommends the establishment of a variety test plot under the direction of the division of subtropical horticulture for the observation of meritorious seedlings and to provide for their thorough and adequate test. Any new seedlings that appear worthy of testing out and perpetuating might be reported to the farm advisor's office for registration. acres or less pay his share in one payment. Lower horizontal line shows COST OF LIVING WAS "UP" 100% IN 1920 WHILE THE COST OF GAS IS 64% LOW) Since 1913, the cost of living has soared. In 1920 it was more than double the figures for 1913. At the end of 1932, it was still 32% HIGHER, notwithstanding the decline from the "peak" of 1920. BUT—since 1914, and the advent of natural gas in Southern California, the cost of gas has remained at a consistent low level. At the end of 1932, the cost was 64% LOWER than it was twenty years ago. The "cost of living" shown in the above chart is for the Los Angeles area and supplied by the U.S. Department of Labor. The cost of gas—indicated by the lower horizontal line—is from the published rates of Southern Counties Gas Company. SOUTHERN COUNTIES C Avocado leads varieties Moves for a Dime But Also On Order "Bunch moves for a dime—no more, no less." But, he only meant one at a time. Joe Bunch told Police Judge Carragher in explaining his latest "racket." Y'see, Judge, I stand on the sidewalk in front of someone's place of business and if they give me a dime I'll move away. The Judge thought Joe, who admitted he formerly made a living by "recovering" old whiskey bottles, was entitled to another "move," so he gave him permission to leave town—or 30 days in jail. Now "Cornerstone Orators" Popular "Cornerstone orators" won a smashing victory at Sacramento recently. When the new Kit Carson junior high school was completed and all was set for the dedication ceremony it was discovered the contractor had failed to leave a vacant space in which to fit the cornerstone. The ceremony seemed doomed. Informed of the sealed-up corners, the board of education immediately got in touch with the ering contractor and workmen set about making a place to lay the cornerstone. Purely private business may earn large profits in times of prosperity. These profits increase as market prices for commodities increase. Gas rates have remained low during both "prosperity" and "depression." They are still 64% lower than the price level of 1913, although living costs are still 32% higher. Skilled employees, conservative management and government regulation will continue to keep the cost of this commodity lower than other factors in the cost of living.
