"'Take off your coat and make yourself at home,' said Jimmy, 'and try a sample of this beer.'" "'Jimmy,' I said, after I had settled myself comfortably, 'this isn't just a social visit—I've been asked by some of the boys over at the capitol to have a little talk with you. They are all a little disappointed in you, Jimmy, because you are so retiring. What we would like to see you do is to take a trip out of Sacramento once in a while and visit the other parts of the state. And when you get an invitation to make a speech, don't always turn it down—let the people see what their governor looks like." "'Now there's a big convention taking place in San Francisco tomorrow, and those people would love to have a speech from you. Jump in an airplane tomorrow and fly down there and—" "But Jimmy stopped me right there. 'No airplane rides for me, oldtimer,' he said firmly. 'Good old terra firma suits me, and I'm going to keep both feet on the ground.' "'Well, then ride down in your Long coln,' I suggested. "'No,' replied Jimmy, 'that's out that car is going to be sold, and from now on I'll either walk or I'll buy bicycle and ride that. And as for speeches and public appearances—I just can't do it—I always get stage fright." "Just then someone raped on the back door, and who should walk in but Walter Garrison and Jimmy Herz." "'We were in town visiting Earl Kelly,' said Walter, accepting the glass of home brew which Rolph offered him 'and we couldn't leave without stopping in to see you. By the way, Jimmy, I sure looks nice to see the capitol domes all illuminated." "At that, the governor lost his temper." "'My God,' he cried 'have they turned those lights on again? I've told them and told them not to waste the public money burning electricity where it isn't needed!' "He became so excited as he said this that I was glad the phone rang just then to distract his attention." "'It's Jack Inman,' said Jimmy, turning from the phone, 'and he wants us all to join him down town at the bowl ing alley and bowl a couple of games I'll tell him we'll be right down. O.K. boys.'" "'O.K. by us,' we replied in unison and away we went for an evening pleasure—just one happy family." One-fourth interest in E-7, J. Neip to H. Legion Endorses "Buy American" State Commander Atherton Says California Department Backed Drive Year Ago The following statement by Warren H. Atherton, state commander of the American Legion, on the "Buy American" movement, was issued from department headquarters in San Francisco recently: "The Buy American' campaign that seems to be spreading throughout the United States, especially since the difficulties of our government in collecting certain war debt installments, has a peculiar appeal to American Legion posts. "The movement received an impetus in the California department of the Legion a year ago. Michigan is especially interested in it and it is being advocated in Ohio and Pennsylvania as well as by our posts in other states. "Legion leaders who are promoting the idea of 'Buy American' believe it is generous to American industry and American labor. It is my personal opinion that too many of our manufacturers, merchants and individuals who deceive 'unemployment and hard times' either thoughtlessly or selfishly spend their money on imported foreign goods. America especially at this time of depression should protect her own payrolls by consuming American goods that require American labor and for which payrolls are maintained."
