Kohler and Goller were appointed to supervise Mr. Hansen's duties. The papers for the purchasing of the land had not arrived, owing to the steamer being late, so there was no further business. San Francisco, Calif., March 18, 1857. After opening of meeting the signing of Articles of Incorporation was at once taken up. Meeting adjourned. John Fischer, Secy. San Francisco, Calif., April 15, 1857. After opening of the meeting the minutes of previous meetings, March 16th and 18th and April 6th were read and approved. Report of Superintendent read, and map of available land sent by same, carefully studied. Mr. Beythien offered the following resolutions: First: That 4 shares be allowed to Americans living in Los Angeles, Senator Wilson, Tulgo, Ogler and others who wished to associate themselves with the society. Second: To await further report of George Hansen's on other land locations. Third: The Board of directors try to get a proposition from Don Plo Pico, or his agent Brodie, and report results at the next stockholders meeting. In placing the 4 shares of stock in Los Angeles, Mr. Hansen was to be instructed to pick men who would be of the greatest benefit to the society. The meeting was then adjourned to meet April 30th at 7:30 P.M. John Fischer, Secy. The membership list was left open until further notice. The superintendent's contract was again discussed, and signing of same deferred until such a time as the land was actually bought. The first bills were presented and ordered-paid: George Hansen, Salary $150.00 La Fontain, printing 500 bill heads and 500 receipt blanks 14.00 Notices in "California Democrat" (local newspaper) 7.00 Second: To await further report of George Hansen's on other land locations. The minutes of the previous meetings were read and the following resolutions adopted: First: That Mr. George Hansen be instructed to purchase from Keller's Ranch 1000 acres, which he considers suitable for grape culture, at the rate of $2.50 per acre, providing proper title for same will be furnished, with the privilege, if possible, of buying a further 1000 acres at the same figure within one year. Second: In the event that Mr. Hansen should have found another tract of land more suitable to the purposes of the society then the before named conditions shall be transferred to same. Third: That three days after arrival of steamer bringing confirmation of purchase, with the necessary legal papers which have been examined by Judge Ogler and Senator Wilson of Los Angeles, and title declared good, the purchase price may be drawn from the Firm Doesel, Sather and Church. Anticipating the triumph of the Chicago Cubs in the National League pennant race, the next two games are scheduled at Chicago on October 1 and 2. The committee to confer with Mr. McFarland, reported it had not been able to see Mr. McFarland so had no report to make. Resignation of Mr. Rooch received and accepted: Muttonbecher appointed Mr. McFarland's return, to do so, but he must allow ample time to get the land in readiness for the planting. Resolved to write Mr. Hansen and instruct him to close deal for land, as previously advised, to proceed with all possible haste to get some ready for plantings and construct fence all around same to keep out cattle. Minutes of previous meeting read and approved. The manager's report of May 25th was read and accepted. Owing to the absence of Mr. McFarland there was no report on the land deal. Vice-President Charles Kohler leaves on the 5th per steamer for L. A. He was asked to confer with Mr. Hansen and by lending his support, try and hurry the selection of a suitable piece of land along, and in every way further the interests of the society. There being no further business, meeting adjourned to June 15. John Fischer, Secy. San Francisco, Calif., June 15th, 1857. The president being absent meeting was opened by Vice-President Mr. Charles Kohler. Minutes of meeting May 18th and June 1st read and approved. Report of Manager read and approved. Manager's salary, $150.00, ordered paid. Messrs. Hameyer and Oettle wished to turn back their stock to the society. On motion made and duly seconded, the directors accepted same, and will at the next stockholders meeting offer it for resale. There being no quorum present the general meeting adjourned to meet August 15th, the secretary to have notices of same, in both German newspapers. John Fischer, Secy. San Francisco, Calif., August 15, 1857. The adjourned general meeting was called to order by President Otmar Caler. The semi-annual reports of the secretary and treasurer were read and Messrs. Zeyn and Meyer appointed to audit same. After being O. K'd, by committee the reports were accepted and filed. The manager's reports of July 25th and August 5th, also maps sent in by manager, were read and discussed. Mr. Kohler, who had been to L. A. reported very favorably on the land along the Santa Ana (River); after lengthy discussions it was resolved: First: The negotiations for land of the Rancho Santa Gertrudes and Rancho Pio Picos to be abandoned. (McFarland's Rancho Santa Gertrudes was on the San Gabriel near Downey. Keller property was Rancho Pio Pico, also on the San Gabriel River.—M. D.) Second: The manager, Mr. Hansen to be instructed to buy at a cost not to exceed $2.00 per acre enough land on the Santa Ana so each share of stock will have 20 acres of tillable land, and enough more for necessary public streets, and at least one public place. Also to provide for the privilege of bringing the water from the river through adjoining lands, without interference for all time. Above resolutions were amended as follows: To secure the privilege to buy within a year-an additional 1000 acres at the same price of $2.00 per acre. It was then resolved to notify all stockholders through the two German newspapers to pay the remaining 90% of their stock, $225.00, to the treasurer, Cyrus Beythien, on or before September 21, 1857. The secretary was instructed to have the manager's contract and bond in readiness. Several amendments to the constitution and by-laws were proposed, and after discussion same were referred to the board of directors to act. No further business the meeting adjourned. A special meeting of the stockholders was called for 8 p.m. Quorum being present, 27 shares, the president called the next stockholders meeting offer it for resale: After expressing their disappointment over the delay of the land purchase, meeting adjourned until after arrival of next steamer. San Francisco, Calif., July 6th, 1857. Fifth regular meeting of directors. There being no business meeting was adjourned to meet July 15th. John Fischer, Secy. San Francisco, Calif., July 15, 1857. After meeting was called to order the report of Manager was read and filed. Mr. McFarland is still absent and secretary was instructed to advise the manager by return steamer that if Mr. McFarland arrived on the next steamer, and agreed to their proposition, to close the deal, and in the meantime proceed with arrangements for the land on the Santa Ana so that that deal might be closed at short notice. Meeting was opened by president at 8 p.m. The detailed report of manager regarding the advantages and disadvantages of the several proposed sites for the colony, and the distance from them to Los Angeles, also distance to San Pedro, after due consideration, the manager to be instructed to buy the Santa Ana land, but if he, the manager, thought it possible to delay the purchase a little longer, in anticipation of San Francisco, Calif., August 29, 1857. A special meeting of the stockholders was called for 8 p.m. Quorum being present, 27 shares, the president called meeting to order. Minutes of the last meeting read and accepted. Report of manager, and maps were presented, discussed, and laid on the table for further discussion. Secretary was instructed to write Judge Ogier a letter of thanks for his opinion. The manager's suggestions as to amendments of the by-laws, being practically the same as those under consideration by the society, were adopted. First: Resolved that these are the by-laws of the society, and their business shall be carried on according to them. Second: Resolved that the amendments of the articles of incorporation suggested by the Los Angeles stockholders be submitted to two good attorneys, and should they declare them correct and of advantage to the society, then such amendments shall be made, and the articles of incorporation sent to the secretary of state to be recorded and the L. A. members notified of same. Messrs. Hittle and Fischer were appointed a committee to carry out these instructions. The contract with the manager, Mr. Hansen, was then read and approved. Meeting adjourned to meet Tuesday September 1st at 7:30 p.m. John Fischer, Secy. San Francisco, Calif., Sept. 1, 1857. There being a quorum present the meeting was called to order. Committee asked for more time to complete articles of incorporation work granted. Officers Navy and Navy Take Exams Vive Phil D. Swing has comments with the United Service commission to conduct examination for appointment to West Napoliis. Inquiries will be held at the county seat of the town in Mr. Swirg's district. Necessary for those desiring examination to promptlygressman, at his San and he will then issue authority to take the exam. Of this mental test will furnish satisfactory physical condition, good natural aptitude for leader. Swing feels that the examination is the fairest to the boys and to the officer selecting his candidate and naval academies. South Heads C. Churches Sponsor Thanksgiving Rite City Ministerial Union Backs "Wet-Dry" Debate And Evangelistic Campaign Members of the Ministerial Union of Anaheim stand behind plans for an annual union worship on the morning of Thanksgiving, an evangelistic campaign to be conducted after the New Year, and the "wet and dry" debate scheduled for Anaheim next Tuesday evening, as a result of the action taken at the recent meeting. Thanksgiving services will be held at the Bethel Baptist church, with Rev. W. R. Thornton of the Wesley Methodist Episcopal church, South, giving the sermon. Rev. O. R. Schroeder of the Bethel church will arrange details of the program. Rev. Schroeder, Rev. Thomas H. Walker and Rev. B. C. Voll were named a committee to nominate officers of the association to be elected at the October meeting. Rev. Ray Harker of the White Temple Methodist church read a communication from Evangelist George Wood Anderson regarding the proposed evangelistic campaign. PIONEER BRASS BAND Mrs. Clara Martin has in her possession a photograph of the first Brass Band organized in Anaheim. It was taken in W. A. Vale's Art Gallery in this city in 1870. The Band contained six pieces and the leader was Antone Grebius. Other members were: Harry D'Assonville, E. A. Pullen, A. Sipple, George Englehart, John Luedke. Mrs. Martin was herself at a later date a member of the Anaheim City Band, and her excellent instrumentation did much to gain for it the title of the best band in Southern California.
