The luckiest fellow we know of just now is the one who isn't even interested in the stock market page. City's Utilities Show a Profit An audit just completed of Anaheim municipal books shows that in the past year the city's utilities made a profit of $93,909 and has assets of $1,183,-902.82. The general fund revenues for the year totaled $380,120.70 and expenditures were $365,257.24, leaving a net operating surplus for the year of $14,-863.46. Capital expenditures were $63,-492.15. At the close of the fiscal year the city treasurer had on hand $12,0000 more than at that time a year ago. What the French seem to want of the German government is a money-back guarantee. A music critic says that the jazz age is over. Yes, all over everything. Speaking of prophets, how about the fellow who predicted that after the Hawley-Smoot tariff bill was passed, prices would go so high you couldn't see 'em with a telescope? London is still one million greater in population than New York, but it does not extend so high in the air. One of our neighbors is so ignorant he thinks a moratorium is a place where you swim in filtered water. A New York youth was arrested for stealing a box full of soil from a park, to grow flowers with. If you want to steal soil and get away with it, you want to do it on a big scale, like the soviets, for instance. It’s the leading color with college men—in two button suits, notched lapels, trimmer lines at waist and hips. Briar brown and Pewter grey are popular too. Center Street ANAHELM Field Day for Walnut Growers Features of Program, September 12, in San Fernando Valley By HAROLD E. WAHLBERG (Orange County Farm Advisor) A topic of much interest to all walnut growers over the entire state is the subject of tree die-back. The University of California, through the citrus experiment station at Riverside, has given this subject a great deal of study, not only recently, but during the past fifteen years. Certain facts have become quite apparent and are certainly more or less relative to this trouble. Field Day for Growers The entire trouble will be discussed as thoroughly as research information will permit at the eleventh annual inter-county walnut growers' field day, held under the auspices of the Intercounty Walnut departments of the Farm Bureau. This field day will start at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, September 12, at the packing house of the San Fernando Valley Walnut Growers' Association, North Los Angeles, formerly Zelzah, in the San Fernando valley. O. L. Braucher, of the research department, California Walnut Growers' Association, working directly with the experiment station, will discuss this subject. Chief Marketing Factor The greatest single factor in the success of any marketing venture is the offering to the public of a constantly high-grade, uniform and standardized product. To this end the state of California has set up such standardization requirements affecting walnuts; likewise the California Walnut Growers' Association has set up certain standards of grades for its various crops. At the field day A. W. Christie, field manager for the California Walnut farmable helium gas which will provide the static lift for the Akron will be contained in 12 separate cells which will require 60,000 square yards or more than 112 acres of fabric. The largest of these cells will contain almost 1,000,-000 cubic feet; the smallest will have a capacity of 100,000 cubic feet. Special Gas Cells "Gas cells in previous rigid chips were made of goldbeater skin (small portions of the intestines of cattle), but the Akron will have approximately one-half of its cells made from rubber impregnated fabric with a paraffin spread, and the remainder will be from a new fabric developed by Goodyear research which is known as 'gelatin-latez.'" With tire prices the lowest in history," concluded Mr. Myers, "together with the new 1931 Goodyear design, and the complete service we now give at Anaheim, filling our sales quota should be easy, so it looks like a trip to Akron and the zep factory." Mr. Myers now is in second place in the southern California contest. Bossermans Buy Barp's Market H. Bosserman of Lincoln, Neb., and his son, W. B. Bosserman, who for two years have been in the grocery business in Los Angeles, this week purchased and took control of Barp's Food Market at Center and Claudina streets. The Bossermans, both of whom have had extensive experience in grocery stores, have rearranged the grocery department of the local firm, which hereafter will operate under the name of Bosserman's Service Grocery. H. Bosserman operated a general store in Nebraska for 20 years, and for the last 10 or more years has been closely affiliated with the grocery business. His son, W. B. Bosserman, several of whose buddies in the army were Anaheim boys, has been in southern California and for several years has had his "eye on Anaheim" because it offered not only an ideal home community, but because it also afforded an opportunity for legitimate business. B. J. Henry Joins Chief Marketing Factor The greatest single factor in the success of any marketing venture is the offering to the public of a constantly high-grade, uniform and standardized product. To this end the state of California has set up such standardization requirements affecting walnuts; likewise the California Walnut Growers' Association has set up certain standards of grades for its various crops. At the field day A. W. Christie, field manager for the California Walnut Growers' Association, will discuss both the state standardization law as it affects walnuts, and the Emerald grading and blending system which has been put into effect this year. Other features on the morning program will be a discussion of advertising, its economics and its advantages; and a discussion of the marketing situation in respect to the country as a whole, particularly to walnuts. The topics will occupy the morning program. The afternoon program will be taken up by a field trip featuring soil management. Hal Myers Seeks Trip to Akron "It's difficult to get a correct idea of the size and detail of the navy alrship Akron front pictures," declared Hal Myers, of the Motor Tire company. "That's why I'm out to make my quota in Goodyear dealers' third annual zeppelin sales race because the dealers who make the highest percentage of sales to quota win a trip to Akron, and a chance to see this Leviathan of the air at the Goodyear-Zeppelin dock where it is being built. The Zeppelin sales contest ends in August about the time the Akron is expected to be making its trial flights, so fortunate dealers who earn the trip will get a close-up view of the ship. "Few of the thousands of spectators who see the Akron on its test flights will realize the number of special features of the ship's construction. For example, the gas cells. The tailoring of these cells is much more exact than that of clothing, and few will stop to think that the fabric used is measured in acres rather than in square yards."
