Nuptials Announced At Bridge Luncheon
A bridge luncheon at the home of the bride-elect, last Saturday, was the occasion for the announcement of the nuptials of Miss Virginia Deming, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Deming, and Marlowe Janss, son of Dr. and Mrs. John Janss, the wedding to be in the autumn.
Twenty friends attended the smart luncheon, a corsage at each cover concealing the news of the nuptials.
Miss Deming attended Pomona and Mills colleges, being graduated from Mills in the class of '27. She and Mr. Janss were both graduated from Anaheim Union High school and he was also graduated in the class of '27 of the University of Southern California. They will make their home in Westwood, where Mr. Janss is a druggist.
Edward B. Harker, Jr., Weds Miss Groover
The wedding ceremony of Edward B. Harker, Jr., and Miss Mildred R. Groover was held in the Presbyterian manse last Saturday evening, the Rev. Thomas H. Walker officiating. Miss Eloise Groover, sister of the bride, was bridesmaid, and Russell Booher, cousin of the bridegroom, was best man.
Following the ceremony the newly-weds left for a brief trip and are now at home on West Lincoln avenue.
The bride was graduated from the Santa Ana high school, class of '26, and since coming to Anaheim has been employed in the local telephone office.
Beach Dinner for Mission Workers
Picnics for "Strays" From Homelands
"Strays" who have wandered into California from the ranges of Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada, will hold their picnic round-up at Bixby park, Long Beach, on Wednesday of next week. The "big red cars" of Pacific Electric will make a special rate for the day and in the park all of the picnic attractions will be put on, including basket dinners, county headquarters, and during the afternoon the Sage Brush Salies will sing.
"Buckeyes" who are far, far from their Ohio homeland, will have their annual get-together at Bixby park on August 1. It will be an all-day affair, with a brief program beginning at 2 o'clock. Coffee will be supplied and good food can be obtained in the park. Harry B. George, president, will preside.
Endowment Dinner By Business Women
The Anaheim Business and Professional Women's club will give an endowment dinner in the City Park tonight, the purpose being to make a substantial contribution to the state organization's endowment fund. Members will take their favorite dish with table service for their guests.
The dinner will be over in time to hear the Long Beach band, which is to give a concert in the park.

Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Hawley entertained the Missionary Society of the Presbyterian church at their Sunset beach cottage at Los Onlas, Monday evening, a feature being a picnic dinner on the beach. A program was given later, when Miss Nettle Aubert led the devotions and the Rev. and Mrs. Thomas A. Walker talked of their recent trip back East.
Officers Re-Elected By Baptist Y. P. U.
The Baptist Young People's Union and the Sunday schools of the California German Baptist churches closed a highly successful convention last Sunday by re-electing and installing the old officers and selecting Wasco as the place for next year's convention.
The hold-over officers are: president, Hubert Stabbert; Anaheim; vice president, H. Iland, Wasco; secretary, Esther Leuschner; treasurer, Meta Seldel, Lodi.
Mr. and Mrs. Dowling Married 43 Years
The Rev. and Mrs. Frank M. Dowling were married 43 years ago last Saturday and the anniversary was observed at their ranch home on Olive road by an informal reception, followed by a dinner in the evening. Among the callers to extend good wishes was Mrs. Jerre Taylor, superintendent of religious education of the United Christian Missionaries, with headquarters in Indianapolis.
Mr. and Mrs. Dowling returned a few days ago from a vacation trip to their cabin near Arrowhead.

Mrs. Robert Gregg was hostess for a recent house party at her Balboa cottage, when the guests took an ocean plunge, played bridge and partook of a covered dish luncheon. The guests were Mrs. Eva and Miss Jessie Boyd, Mrs. John Kellenberger, Mrs. Theodora Frahm, Miss Jessie Coons, Mrs. Fletcher, Mrs. Lois Dyer, Mrs. Blanche Graves-Denis, Mrs. Susie Brown, Mrs. Esther Kemper.
Reno Is Thriving, Also "Wide Open"
"Reno certainly is a thriving city. It has all the features of a big metropolis, an unusual number of pretty divorcees, and is 'wide open' in practically every sense of the word." Mel Colbert, employee of the Economy Shoe Store, stated upon his return Monday from a visit to the divorce capitol of America.
Mr. and Mrs. Colbert and daughters Kathryn and Ellen visited friends and relatives at Reno during their two-week vacation.
OPEN HOUSE FOR NEWLY-WEDS
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Atherton, who were married on July 12 are now "at home" at Homewood avenue and Eighth street, Buena Park, having returned from their honeymoon trip. An "open-house" reception was given for them, Saturday evening, by Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Atherton.
Miss Lillian Lund and Miss Elsie Auer gave a dinner Thursday evening at the Chileken Shack, the guests being the Misses Clara Mork, Dorothy Kopfer, Helen Diller, Florence Auer and Ruth Tauhton.
Melbourne A. Gauer and family are spending a portion of his vacation in the Big Bear region.
Word from Miss Mary Millerick is that she arrived in New York and is at the Astor hotel where she is attending style shows.
Mr. and Mrs. Reginald Taylor and Mrs. Lester Randall left Saturday for Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, where they will visit for a month. Red Deer being the former home of the Taylors. They will return via Banff and Lake Louise.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Foster have returned from a trip of two weeks in the High Sierras.
Mr. and Mrs. Ross Hart, who made a vacation trip to Oregon, have returned home.
Mrs. Loretta Hain has returned from two weeks vacation at Long Beach.
Miss Elizabeth Morgan sang a group of songs for the Round Table club of Santa Ana, Friday noon.

WEDDING AT ST. MICHAEL'S
Miss Jane Cornell Gogaunssen, of Los Angeles, and Francis R. Scheffeld, of South Pasadena, were married in St. Michael's church by Rector D. Howard Dow, Monday, only members of the two families witnessing the ceremony. The newly-weds were friends of the Rector when he was at St. James church in Los Angeles.

Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Gregg entertained a number of friends at a swimming party and dinner at Balboa Beach, Thursday evening, followed by informal assembly around an open fire on the beach. FAREWEELL FOR MRS. RANDALL
Mrs. Lester Randall, who left Saturday for a visit in Canada, was the guest at a farewell dinner party given Friday evening by Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Russell at Highland Tea Garden. The evening was spent at bridge at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Russell, when the awards went to Mrs. C. P. Tompkins, Mrs. Elton McKamy, Mr. Russell and Blaine Huntoon.

A musicale for the Ladies' Aid of Evangelical church was given by the Misses "Ferne" and Margaret Hein at their home, Thursday afternoon. The program also included an address by the Rev. D. Burgl on "What Is the Church?"

Reception in Park For Newly-Weds
Mr. and Mrs. Walter S. Runyan have issued invitation to the wedding of their daughter, the Rev. Dorothy Katherine Runyan, to the Rev. Wayne R. McIntosh, next Monday evening, at the Anaheim Four-Square Gospel church.
Guests to the number of 225 have been invited to witness the ceremony, while there will also be 100 seats open to the public.
Following the wedding ceremony a reception for the newly-weds will be held at the City Park, for which 200 invitations have been issued.
A number of members of the Crusader group of the local church gave a surprise dinner for the bride and groom-elect at the City Park one evening last week. Miss Runyan has been pastor of the local church for several years.

Mr. and Mrs. F. J. O'Neil of North Claudina street left Wednesday for a ten-day motor trip to Chester, California, where they will visit friends and day-times motor to the opening fiesta for Mt. Lassen National Park. From Chester they plan to motor to Reno to spend a day, thence through the Green Lake valley to pack back into the mountains for a fishing trip, then to Bishop, Independence, across the Mosave desert and home.

Christian Science Lesson-Sermon
"Truth" is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon, Sunday, in all branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass.
One of the scriptural selections includes passages from the song of Moses: "... ascribe ye greatness unto our God ... a God of Truth and without iniquity, just and right is He."
Another Bible citation tells of the Master's work: "And Jesus went about all Gallice, teaching in... their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner sickness and all manner of disease among the people. And his fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them."
An excerpt from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy, etates: "Truth has no consciousness of error. Love has no sense of hatred. Life has no partnership with death. Truth, Life and Love are a law of annihilation to everything unlike themselves, because they declare nothing except God."
Junior Colleges Get Funds From State
The State Department of Education at Sacramento has made allotments of funds to junior colleges and grade schools, under which Fullerton Junior gets $42,800 and Santa Ana Junior gets $55,700. The Riverside County Junior gets $40,000; Long Beach Junior, $103,000; Chaffey, of San Bernardino, $54,000; San Bernardino Valley Union, $51,700.
The total state apportionments to the schools amounts to $11,044,200.
The State Department reports that the average daily attendance of high schools in California was 266,354, while in 1930 the daily attendance was 266,354.
Miss Twinem Will Teach in China
Miss Marguerite Twinem is attending school in Los Angeles, preparatory to going to Tientsin, China, where she will teach in the school of the M.E. Women's Foreign Missionary Society. She is well known in a wide circle of friends in Anaheim, where for the past two years she has been an active director of the Business and Professional Women's Club.
GIRL SCOUTS IN CAMP
A bevy of Anaheim Girl Scouts left Monday morning for their camp near Seven Oaks, where they will be for several days. The party is made up of Margaret Campbell, Alberta Maas, Katherine Anna McCullah, Rosalie Helin, Lois Jean Guass, Dorothy Marvin, Doris Berger, Alice Becker, Elizabeth Hardin, Shirley Lewellyn, Selma Sansbury, Barbara Phillips, Bernice Tompkins, Barbara and Louise Benson, Mary Shea, Eleanor Becker, Elaine Roquet, Hazel Brown, Luella Webster and Virginia Harbeson.
The girls were accompanied by Adah Wilcox, Adelaide Price, Mrs. Earl Phillips, Alma Callor and Katherine Shea.

Mr. and Mrs. E. Wiseman, Anaheim jewelers, and their Harrodsburg, Ky., visitors, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Reed, enjoyed last week end in a vacation at Santa Catalina Island, where the local couple did all in their power to show the "Magic Isle" off advantage.

LOWER TAX RATE SOUGHT
The county supervisors have been asked by the Laguna Beach Realty board to reduce the tax rate 15 to 20 per cent. The California Taxpayers association has also written the board urging a strictly conservative policy when making up the county budget.
