PORTRAIT OF THE HON. MRS. CUNLIFFE OFFLEY BY SIR THOMAS LAWRENCE
nished himself as the English court painter per excellence, and was in demand by all the royal families of Europe. He executed portraits of Pope Plus VII and of Cardinal Gonsalvi. Penny pictures of himself sold in England, it is said, for a young sterling, provided the pictures bore his autograph, and any kind of a painting by him brought from two or three thousand dollars. PORTRAIT OF ROBERT BURNS
HUNTINGTON LIBRARY
And the portrait in the Huntington Library is one of the Hon. Sir Thomas Cunliffe Offley, by Sir Thomas Cunliffe. It is one of his best, and that is saying much; because he has put it on a ten-year-old book in his library, priced porch-side by his time. He distinguishes by all the royal families of Europe. He executed portraits of Pope Plus VII and of Cardinal Gonsalvi. Penny pictures of himself sold in England, it is said, for a young sterling. Provided the pictures bore his autograph, and any kind of a painting by him brought from two or three thousand dollars. A distinguished art critic once said of him that he "made coxcomb of his sitters, and his sitters made a coxcomb of him." An attractive lonely man of the world, he never normal time to marry.
Mr. Huntington acquired three of Lawrence's best portraits: "The Hon. Mrs. Cunliffe Offley," "Pinkie," and "Little Red Riding Hood."
All told, he acquired more than forty canvases by the master painters of Lawrence's time, the eighteenth century period when portrait painting was at its peak, and all these prieless works of art, together with the Huntington Library and the 207 acres of surrounding grounds, belong now to the people of California.
It has taken the British Empire since 1763 to build up the British Museum, yet in many respects this Huntington treasure house surpasses the British Museum.

Elaborate Ceremonies as Prelude To Pasadena Fete for New Year's Day
HER GOWN IS ELABORATE
She Will Be Attended by Six Hand-Maidens
All the pomp and splendor of medals were revived in the coronation of the queen of the Tournament of Horses Brookside Park, Pasadena. A golden crown was placed upon the head of Queen Mary Lou Waddell of San Marino C. Hall Reynolds, president of the coronation and Miss Association will be the robes of an archibishop.
At the coronation were C. W. Olmsted, the cancer of the Southern California colony; J. V. Van Praag, chairman of the coronation parade committee; D. E. Peters, Pasadena archi-tect; M. S. Jones, boats committee; and R. C. Cole, associated with the Santa Ana leader of ceremonial decorations committee. They all were gorgeous church's robes.
The queen was crowned she was presented a spectacular flower salutation by the hundreds of pageant spectators. Land person had brought flowers from their home garden and these were showcased on the attractive young woman. Queen Lou Waddell, it junior girl will truly welcome all visitors to the 1931 Tournament of Roses which will usher in a year of festivals, pageants and festas throughout the length and breadth of California.
At the coronation ceremony she wore the gown in which she will appear on the official Tournament of Roses float next New Year's day. It is a peach satin court dress of the Josephine period with a red velvet court train embroidered in gold leaf wreaths. She wore an ermine shoulder cape with high silver lace collar.
Six attractive Pasadena Junior college girls will attend Queen Mary Lou in the New Year's day floral procession just as they did at the coronation ceremony on Monday. They wore exquisite court gowns in lovely colors. The handmaidens are Miss Fannie Arnold, Miss Alice Achley, Miss Mael Carberry, Miss Florence Joyce Dunkerley, Miss Myrta Olmsted and Miss Myrna Wilson.
Sound motion pictures were taken of the present and the coronation festivities will appear in motion picture sheds throughout the nation setting earth of California in mid-winter. One of the striking features of the queen was her appearance of a group of 15 youngsters between the ages of 4 and 6 doing a French cabotte. Music was furnished by the Pasadena First Department Band, prize winning musical organization under the direction of Henri Van Praag. Community singing was another feature of the festival which will become an annual event preceding each Tournament of Roses.
Unseen Gas Kills Without Warning
Again, warning is sounded against the unseen danger of carbon monoxide gas when the automobile motor is running in a closed garage. The Automobile Club of Southern California points out that this insidious poison attacks the autist in such instances without previous warning.
Because of the fact that the gas can quickly overcome its victims, hundreds of persons are killed yearly from exposure to carbon monoxide present in auto exhaust gases, manufactured gas and other gases.
It is an unsafe practice to warm up the engine in a garage, for the door may blow shut, if not already closed, making the exhaust gas deadly dangerous. Mechanics are warned never to work under a car when the engine is running, because of this hazard. Defective gas heaters in homes frequently cause tragedies through the escape of carbon monoxide in closed rooms.
NO CHANGE OF POLICY
European politicians, who at first thought after receiving the word that the Democrats had made sweeping gains in the American Congress, declared more or less joyfully that America was about to embark on a new European policy, are now changing their tunes, upon sober second thought. For instance, Jaques Bainville, in one of the leading French journals said recently:
"Whey Republicans replace Democrats or Democrats defeat Republicans we always think it will be favorable for Europe, but the Democrats are just as indifferent to Europe as they adversaries. It would be better if they did not mix in European affairs at all rather than follow the methods of President Wilson who in the period from 1918 to 1919 contributed so much to the European mess."
"The Hoover regime remains, and so long as it continues there will be no change in debts or tariffs nor will there be any difference afterward."
There is a great deal of sound thinking displayed in the above. The election does not mean that Uncle Huechel State of California is safe.

we always think it will be favorable for Europe, but the Democrats are just as different to Europe as their adversaries. Guardian of the Family
"My father, who is past 75, shares our bottle of Syrup Pepsin with his little great-granddaughter aged three. And when I feel constipated, with headache and biliousness, I also get my share of Syrup Pepsin. We would as soon think of being without salt and sugar as not to have a bottle of Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin in the house." (Name and address will be furnished upon request)
Constipation Always a Danger
"Always something," says mother. "Billiousness, sour stomach, headache, colds, fevers—you never know when or what." Syrup Pepsin is mother's safeguard. Sweetens stomach, moves bowels; children recover like magic. No wonder mothers everywhere know and trust Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin. It is the guardian of the family's health. Sweet, sirupy—children and old people love it. Mild, yet thorough in action. Sudden colds, fevers, headache—conditions responsible for nearly all disease—a dose of Syrup Pepsin and all fear is gone. Once in the home every mother says—"I keep it always on hand." Every druggist calls Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin.
