Sheperd, President of the Shepherd Tractor and Equipment Company, Southern California Distributors for "Caterpillar" Tractors, Combines and Road Machinery, tells many interesting stories of "Caterpillar's" light tread. Dynamite! A box of it was carelessly left under an orange tree in the grove of E. B. Webb, Porterville, California. Along came Mr. Webb on his 2-Ton "Caterpillar," cultivating close to the trees. He saw the box of dynamite as the box shattered. Dynamite and caps both rolled under the tracks—but there was no explosion. Eggs! A nice fresh egg was buried to a depth of 2 inches in loose summer-fallowed soil. Less than an inch of dirt was spread over it by Prof. E. J. Stirniman of the University of California, who made this test to determine the pressure per square inch of the wide tracks. A "Caterpillar" Twenty pulling a full load was driven over the egg and it came through as whole and hearty as ever. Men! The world war yields this story of a man run over by a big war-time "Caterpillar." Dr. Paul G. Capps, of San Mateo, California, tells this: "During the war, I was regimental surgeon to a regiment of French seventy-fives, motorized by 'Caterpillars.' On one long march through mountainous country we made camp about midnight in a small field. I was sound asleep when the roar of a tractor awakened me. The air was filled with piercing screams. The tractor stopped. Immediately I was informed a man had been hurt—would I see him? I found a man who was badly frightened but not otherwise injured. "I examined this man carefully and the skin was not broken, and except for a small bruise that developed the next day he was unhurt and was never entered on the slick and wounded register. His arm was covered by two of the track plates and merely pushed a small distance into the soft ground." The latest story, says Mr. Shepherd is of a little Canadian field mouse that was run over by a non-packing "Caterpillar". Mr. F. L. Peskett, of Dauphin, Manitoba, tells his story: "One day my 'Caterpillar' Fifteen was pulling a tandem disk in the field and I noticed a mouse directly ahead of the tractor. One of the tracks ran over it and the disk came along and dug it up again. Then the mouse ran off in another direction, apparently yall right." "Caterpillar' enjoys a 'light tread' because the weight of the tractor (from two to ten tons of heat-toughened steel in each) is evenly distributed over a large area by the wide tracks, says Mr. Shepherd. In fact, there is less pressure per square inch on the ground." "Caterpillar' enjoys a 'light treat' because the weight of the tractor (from two to ten tons of heat-toughened steel in each) is evenly distributed over a large area by the wide tracks, says Mr. Shepherd. In fact, there is less pressure per square inch on the ground under a "Caterpillar" track than there is under a man's foot. 'Common Clay' Shapes Fate Can an unmarried mother hope for justice from our "best people?" Who are our "best people?" Can a girl who has made a mistake ever rehabilitate herself? These are some of the absorbing questions that are fearlessly answered in "Common Clay," Victor Fleming's remarkable production for Fox movie-tone featuring Constance Bennett and Lew Ayres, which opens next Monday for 3 days at the Fox Theatre. Closely following Cleves Kinkead's noted Harvard prize play in its theme and story, the screen version is said to be even more gripping and dramatic than the original. Miss Bennett enacts the role that carried Jane Cowl to fame before the footlights. The story centers around a pleasure-loving girl who takes a job in a speak-easy because of the galaxy and music she craves. When the establishment is raided, she sees the dangers of the path she is following and abandons the bright lights for a position as a maid in a fashionable home. Here, however, she finds herself subject to the same unwelcome attentions an eventually falls in love with the young heir of the house, played by Lew Ayres who betrays her. Her subsequent efforts to secure justice for herself and her child, with the unexpected turn of events at the climax form a basis for one of the most interesting screen offerings of recent months. Miss Bennett's work as the girl is acclaimed by critics as a triumph of audible films. A distinguished cast, including Tully Marshall, Beryl Mercer, Hale Hamilton, Purnell B. Pratt, Matty Kemp and other favorites, enact prominent roes. Anaheim, Calif., Aug. 14, 1930 RE-ELECT Charles D.
