Going To Europe For Information Systems of Propagation Will Be Studied by California Authority Methods of propagation from seedlings will be studied in Europe by Dr. W. L. Howard, professor of pomeology at the University of California College of Agriculture at Davis, who leaves for England next month. Results of his study will be viewed with keen interest by California agriculturists for many systems of propagation not used in the United States are known across the Atlantic. The common practice in California is to bud or graft to the seedlings. In Europe propagation is accomplished also by hardwood cuttings and by layering. As layering here has been accomplished by suckering from the roots, Dr. Howard hopes he may find how this is overcome in Europe and to bring back information useful to California. Dr. Howard will be on leave for six months, and before returning will attend the ninth international horticultural congress, August 7 to 15, in London. 4-H Clubs Are Starting New Year The large interest in 4-H work being shown by the rural boys and girls of Orange County indicates that more and better work will be done by the agricultural clubs in 1930 than ever before. Re-enrollment of old members in existing clubs is proceeding rapidly and several new clubs are in the process of formation in different parts of the county. Yorba Linda and San Jaun Capistrano will each have two clubs this year; the boys of high school age maintaining separate organizations. The Tustin Club apparently will maintain its portion as the largest club in the county. Savannah, the youngest club, is out for an efficiency record. Villa Park and Buena Park clubs are reorganizing and will furnish real competition creation, which is challenge to the best that is in a boy and his leader. The purpose of the 4-H Club work is admirably expressed by Theodore Roosevelt. "I believe in the free public training of both the hand and the mind of every child born of woman. I believe that by the right training of men we add to the wealth of the world. All wealth is the creation of man and he creates it only in proportion of the trained use of the community; and the more men we train, the more wealth everyone may create." The 4-H Club member "learns by doing." Daily Radio Program Beginning each day at 12 p.m., and continuing 10 minutes, talks of interest to farmers, growers and producers will be given during the week. Other clubs, such as Katella, are ready to start reorganizing for the coming year. The Club Council has adopted sixteen projects for competition in 1930. This is an increase of three over 1928; namely, baby beef, sheep and sugar beets, all of which have been requested by members in dothers interested in furthering the production of these commodities in Orange County. A complete four-fold program of activities has been adopted by the County 4-H Club Council, which embraces individual improvement, community service, agricultural projects and re- Distribute Pheasants In California Superintendent August Bade, of the Yountville State Game Farm, operated by the Division of Fish and Game, reports the distribution of several shipments of pheasants to areas in California not formerly stocked with these birds. The setting aside of this area as a game sanctuary was made possible through the activity of Luis M. Denio of Martinez. Another plant of pheasants was made last week in Mono County. The birds in that shipment were sent first to Reno then to Minden, Nevada, and back by truck to the Antelope Valley, where they were liberated near Bridgeport. Eleven ranchers of the Antelope Valley section have set aside over 7,000 acres as a refuge, which is posted against all shooting. Plans are being made at this time for an initial plant of pheasants from the Yountville farm on the new game refuge recently created in San Luis Obispo county, which will be made during the first week in January. 25,000 of your Neighbors will say... NAME ADDRESS ANAHEIM GAZETTE Advertising Bill Of Fruit Exchange Nearly Two Millions Spent for Sunkist Publicity Last Year In an address before the 42nd Annual Convention of the Newspaper Publishers Association held at Long Beach on January 11th, W. B. Geissinger, advertising manager of the California Fruit Growers Exchange disclosed that his organization is one of the biggest advertisers of the west having invested $11,800,532 since the inception of Sunkist advertising twenty two years ago. Mr. Geissinger in his talk before the convention brought out some striking side-lights and facts on California's position in the advertising world. Comparing California with the state of New York in regards to amount of advertising space used both locally and nationally, Mr. Geissinger said, "New York state's population of 11,550,000 is 153 per cent greater than that of California and has 605 newspapers compared with 637 for California. The California newspapers in 1928 carried 272,903,455 lines of local display advertising and 77,252,632 lines of national display line as compared with 330,846,191 local display lines and 94,012,116 national display lines for the New York papers. In other words California carried 82.3 per cent as much local advertising and 82.5 per cent as much national line as the newspapers in New York state." Speaking of the uses of advertising in cooperative marketing, Mr. Geissinger cited the California Fruit Growers Exchange and the results obtained by a sustained policy of educational advertising. "In 1907 the first Sunkist newspaper campaign was conducted with an investment of $6,000. During last season the Exchange invested $1,680,000 in advertising their products. During the twenty-two years of Sunkist advertising and sales promotion, consumption of citrus fruits has increased 336 per cent while the population has only increased 39 per cent." "In addition to the three national advertising campaigns in newspapers this publication are to be placed in rooms and apartments for rent in Orange County and will be sent to those who may take up residence here during the year. A number of articles are to appear in this issue including one entitled 'WHY GO TO CHURCH?' "In addition to the three national advertising campaigns in newspapers we now schedule in a normal year, we have the important dailies and weeklies in the leading citrus belt communities of California for the past three seasons in an institutional campaign," said Mr. Gelssinger. "We appreciate the splendid cooperation and editorial support which many of the publishers have given this campaign." In speaking of advertising throughout the United States, he said, "A reasonable estimate for 1228 places the expenditure for newspaper advertising in the United States at $800,000,000 and the share for periodical advertising of all kinds including business and farm newspapers at $300,000,000. Including other forms of advertising a total of $1,210,000,000 is spent yearly and another billion dollars for direct by mall advertising. The 1929 total was a gain of $5,541,000 over 1928, when the vegetable production in California netted growers $77,638,000. Lettuce was the highest individual crop in point of value, returning nearly $23,009,000 to the growers. Cantaloupes were second at $13,242,000, asparagus third with $8,776,000, and peas fourth with $5,106,000. As a general rule were lower in 1929 than in previous years according to E. E. Kaufman, federal-state crop statistician, who prepared the report on truck crops. The decrease in yield was caused by long cold spring weather and a dry summer. A general increase in cereals kept the total production in practically all crops above that of 1928. M. P. THOMPSON CO.
