Pneumonia and Flu Due This Spring
Pneumonia, Flu and Measles May Be Epidemic It is Predicated
Watch out for an epidemic of influenza and pneumonia during February and March of the coming year. While you are about it, prepare for a run of measles at the same time.
Dr. Walter M. Dickle, director of the state department of public health, is predicting the aforementioned situation, based on a method of figuring epidemics in advance, through study of current data on the subject.
About the only cheer in sight, according to Dr. Dickle, is the fact that outbreaks of "flu" and pneumonia in the spring months are usually not as extensive as those during the fall.
So with this slight consolation—especially to the persons who always get what is around, extensive or not—Dr. Dickle plunges into a discussion of what to do when you feel the clutches of one of these respiratory infections, as the profession calls them.
In the first place, and before you feel anything coming on, don't allow your gregarious instincts to dominate—in other words, stay away from crowds. If there is one thing a respiratory germ does enjoy, it is a crowd. He, or she, thrives on them, literally and figuratively.
Then after you have disregarded this advice and find the disease coming on you—go to bed. Not only go to bed, but stay there. When you figure you have had sufficient rest remain in bed for another two or three days and you will probably be ready to get up.
Dr. Dickle advises a physician being called in all cases of influenza and pneumonia. The serious results of these diseases must be viewed with apprehension, he said, and pointed to the 1928 death rate in California of 47.3 per 1,000 for influenza, and 96.3 per 1,000 for pneumonia as proof of his contention.
varied from 9.5 pounds to 84.2 pounds per colony.
The study revealed that the average total cost of production per 100 colonies was $396.00, divided as follows—labor $135.44, material $107.31, cash overhead $16.53, location rental $29.20, interest $41.68, and depreciation $55.91. The most important factor influencing returns, of course, is quantity production.
The average amount invested in the business swas $861.23 per 100 colonies, divided as follows—bees $375.00, nives $364.62, buildings $43.77, and equipment $77.84. The range of investments was from $756.87 to $1599.20 per 100 colonies.
DEPORTATIONS
A deportation party, consisting of 56 mental cases and 60 boys from the Preston school of industry, left California for middle western and eastern points on December 18.
The party will cost the state just $15,755, but state officials estimate that the saving to the state is $179,684, based on an estimated institutional life of from 14 months to 10 years. The party members will be returned to the states from which they came.
MENTAL HYGIENE
After setting his corps of assistants to work, Dr. Frederick H. Allen, selected to carry out California's mental hygiene study, has returned to Philadelphia until next June, Mrs. Anna L. Saylor, head of the state department of social welfare, told the governor's council meeting.

Speaking of measles, Dr. Dickle told how this disease comes in regular cycles and an increasing incidence of the last few weeks proves to him that measles will be right up in front among leading alliances of children during January, February and March. Adults are by no means immune to measles, he said.
Beekeepers Study Cost of Production
The third year of cost records on honey production in Orange County will close January 1st, and the fourth year started. This is the first standardized study of operation costs by beekeepers in the Pacific Coast, according to Harold E. Wahlberg, Farm Adviser, who is directing the work in cooperation with the Farm Bureau Beekeepers Department.
By these records the local honey producer can analyze the various cost items that are involved in the business in comparison with the other operators. The average cost of the entire group submitting monthly labor and material charges is also determined, which provides another standard of comparison.
On the basis of the 1928 wholesale honey prices, it took an average of 35 pounds of honey per colony to pay all expenses including labor, material and overhead charges. The 1928 study involved the reports on 1461 colonies of bees in Orange County. The average number per apiary was 385 colonies. The average production was 46.2 pounds of honey per colony; the production...
