MOTOR NOTES Motorists desiring to make a one-day loop trip of approximately 100 miles will enjoy the one which extends through Mint Canyon, Agua Dulce Canyon to Vasquez Rocks, Soledad, Sand, Bear and Placerita Canyons, then homeward through Newhall and San Fernando, according to the Touring Department of the National Automobile club. Pavement is continuous to a point 18 miles beyond Saugus. Turning right at a well marked sigh, a good dirt road leads to the Vasquez Rocks, purported to be the hiding place of the notorious bandit who terrorized California during the years from 1857 to 1874. This road leads north of the rocks and continues around them leading around their southern extremity, thence back to the entrance road which is retraced one mile to a junction point. A very good road leads through Agua Dulce Canyon. This is a new road built on a new grade and it intersects the Soledad Canyon road 2½ miles east of Lang. A good dirt road with a few streams crossing is had through this canyon to the intersection of the Sand Canyon road. Good dirt road leads through this canyon to the Placerita Canyon road. Fair dirt, narrow and winding, with one grade of 15% leads through this canyon to main highway at northern limits of Newhall. Gold was discovered in Placerita Canyon and samples of it sent to the Philadelphia mint two years prior to the discovery of gold on Sutter Creek. Many mounds of rock and dirt remain attesting to the zeal of the padres of the San Fernando Mission, who removed much gold from this canyon. A second application of oil is now being applied on the National Old Trails route from a point 8 miles west of Ludlow to Needles. A third application of oil will be applied on this section the latter part of the month. Upon completion of the oiling, practically all of the wasn-boarded conditions will be removed. The new gravel road between Gila Bend and Casa Grande, Arizona, is now nearing completion. This new road will shorten the distance 94 miles before completion. Trojan Institution Is Fifty Years Old Twelve men and women who will have been on the faculty of the University of Southern California for 25 years or more when the institution celebrates its 50th anniversary in June, 1930, are announced as an honorary faculty group of the semi-centennial celebration committee by Dr. Rockwell D. Hunt, dean of the graduate school and general chairman of the committee. The members of the Trojan "silver committee" are: President Emeritus George Finley Bovard, who started as an instructor in 1881 and was elected president of the University in 1903, serving in that capacity for 18 years; Dean Laird J. Stabler of the college of pharmacy, who has been at the University since 1894; Dean Walter F. Skeele of the college of music, on the faculty since 1895; Dean Lewis E. Ford of the college of dentistry, at S. C. since 1897; Prof. Albert B. Ulrey, professor of biology, Prof. Charles E. Pemberton of the college of music, and Miss Margaret G. Borthwick of the department of German at Southern California since 1901; Dr. J. F. Mauer of the college of dentistry, appointed to the staff in 1902; Dean Emeritus Frank M. Porter of the school of law whose service dates from 1904; Dean Emeritus Ezra A. Healy of the school of religion, Mrs. Adelaide Trowbridge Perry of the college of music, and Prof. James Main Dixon of the department of comparative literature, who became members of the faculty in 1905. The University of Southern California was founded in 1880. New Parachute Packs Invented A new parachute has been designed by Sgt. E. H. Nichols, instructor in the flying school at Brooks Field. It completely covers the wearer's back and is but two inches thick, forming a comfortable back rest. When the wearer stands the weight of the pack is carried comfortably on the hips and shoulders. A third application of oil will be applied on this section the latter part of the month. Upon completion of the oiling, practically all of the wasn-boarded conditions will be removed. The new gravel road between Gila Bend and Casa Grande, Arizona, is now nearing completion. This new road will shorten the distance 94 miles between the Pacific Coast and Southern Arizona points. Another popular short cut at this time is the splendid gravel road which extends from Gila Bend through Ajo to Tucson. It is 26 miles shorter than the route from Gila Bend through Phoenix to Tucson. The fishing along he Rogue and Klamath rivers bids fair to be the best for four years. Already the first of the fall run is appearing in both streams and several specimens have been taken as far up as Grants Pass on the Rogue. The fishing is done mostly by wading these streams and it is well to be provided with English waders and heavy hob-nailed shoes, as the rocks are very slippery. It is advisable to use a fly or a No. 4 brass spinner, kept very bright. A heavy duty rod with a good heavy line and plenty of bocking and an extra heavy leader must be used, as the fish are large and heavy, running from 5 to 9 pounds in weight. Brown and gray hackle Professor Silver Docor, Royal Coachman, Jock Scott and Yellow May flies, tied to a No. 6 hook will be found effective. On the road from Bakersfield to Maricopa via Connor, 40 miles, pavement is had to a point 6 miles beyond Connor, with good oiled dirt to Pentland and balance paved. Motorists from Southern California points should turn off the Golden State highway at Reed's Station and take a good oiled dirt road to Pentland, thence over pavement to Maricopa. The distance from Reed's Station to Maricopa is 24 miles. Fishing conditions are now at their best at Bubbs, Wods Creek and the Kings River and in Woods, Charlotte, East, Reflection, Bullfrog, Rae and Baxter lakes in the High Sierra district. All kinds of trout are available in these waters, ranging in size from 5 to 12 inches in the lakes and from 8 to 26 inches in the streams. Worms, salmon eggs, gray hackle royal coachman and spinners are bringing favorable results. Sage hens are fairly plentiful in Long Valley Deep Springs Valley and in the Bodie district, and hunters to these districts can be reasonably sure of good results. Good fishing is now reported from Birch Lake, Black and Sixth Lakes, Birch and Big Pine Creeks. Rainbow, lochloven, eastern brookk and black spotted trout are found in these waters, averaging in size from 6 inches. New Parachute Packs Invented A new locar parachute has been designed by Sgt. E. H. Nichols, instructor in the flying school at Brooks Field. It completely covers the wearer's back and is but two inches thick, forming a comfortable back rest. When the wearer stands the weight of the pack is carried comfortably on the hips and shoulders. Sgt. Nichols has also invented a machine gun parachute pack which makes it possible for a machine gun to be set up and fired in less than a minute after it has been dropped to the ground from a plane. The machine gun floats to the ground in a kapok-cushioned pack, with a cushion between the gun and its tripod. Rounds of ammunition and a container of water also are placed in the pack, which, when equipped, has a total weight of 125 pounds. By pulling a cable, the pilot releases the bag, the weight of which pulls the parachute ripcord. In tests conducted at Brooks Field, bombing planes released the guns from as low an altitude as 150 feet, placing them with only negligible drift. In the tests the gunners descended from other planes, from regulation attitudes, so that they would reach the earth in time to set up the machine gun as soon as it reached the ground. Worms, grubs, March Brown, Blue Bottle and Mosquito flies as well as spinners are bringing good results. Tourists through New Mexico will soon have the boon of an extensive and authoritative system of directional signs to aid them in finding and exploring the 313 wonders of which state boasts. The State Highway Department is now making surveys and completing the preliminary steps toward the erection of such a system. These signs will amplify the already complete line of warning and road condition signs now in place. On the route between El Centro and Julian via Vallecito, pavement is had to a point three miles beyond Dixieland followed by a sandy, slow road, with many cross-washed sections to Vallecito. A fairly good desert road leads via the Campbell Ranch and Box Canyon to San Felipe Creek, thence fair to good gravel through Banner to Julian. The route from Paso Robles to Hanford via Shandon is not advisable at this time. Cottonwood pass is in very rough condition and practically impassable due to heavy trucking. On the road from Fredonia, Arizona, to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon 78 miles, splendid improved gravel road is traversed throughout, with the exception of two miles of highway immediately north of the V. T. Resort. Re-alignment of highway is under way on this section and a number of short detours are in evidence. These detours offer slow going during or immediately after rains.
