Gasoline Taxes For Last Quarter Increase In Receipts Shown Over All Previous Quarters The activities of California motorists do not cease when the peace pact been warring dealers in gasoline become effective, according to reports issued by the State Board of Equalization. The conclusion of the board is based on returns made to that office by distributors of motor vehicle fuel for the quarterly period ended June 30th. For the months of April, May and June, the total distributions of motor vehicle fuel amounted to $27,517,866.7 gallons. The tax of three cents per gallon on such distributions, less 1% shrinkage, will amount to $9,133.469. This is the greatest assessment against distributors for any one quarter and is an increase of 6.8% over the previous highest quarter ended September 30, 1928, when a tax of $8,551.39 was charged against distributions of 287,921,761.9 gallons. It is further noted by the board that the current assessment shows a gain of 7.7% over that for the corresponding quarter in 1928, when the tax roll amounted to $4,772,266.69 on distributions aggregating 285,430,526.2 gallons. The board reports that the total assessments for the half year ended June 30 are $17,68,058.82. This compared with the assessments for the corresponding period of 1928, for which a tax of $15,935,122.09 was levied, indicates a gain of 11%, and it is believed that the motor vehicle fuel taxes for the year 1929 will exceed $35,000,000. After the allowance of refunds because of use of the fuel for non-highway purposes, it is estimated that more than 33,000,000 will remain to be spent for highway construction and maintenance. Although June is the month in which residents and tourists start using the highways in great number, returns from distributors for prior years demonstrate that the peak is usually not reached until July or August. For this reason it is considered likely that the taxes for the ensuing quarter ending Versatility of The Game Warden Become Fire Fighters When the Occasion Presents Itself The versatility of the California game warden has again been demonstrated. Reports have reached the office of the Division of Fish and Game detailing the resourcefulness and efficient work done by Deputy William J. Harp, of Arcata, in fighting a huge fire in his district, and by his efforts and those of a crew of men under his direction, perventing the almost certain killing of thousands of fish in Redwood Creek, when huge tanks containing 30,000 gallons of strong tanning extract burst and the liquid released. The Oaktex tanning extract plant is located on Redwood Creek in Humboldt county, in Harp's district. A few days ago while Harp was about a mile away from the plant and the employees were at lunch, fire broke out in the boiler room of the plant. Harp ruhed to the scene and alided in fighting the fire. As it was impossible to reach the pumps, the fire fighting apparatus was useless, and the men worked as a bucket brigade and saved the blacksmith shop and bark sheds, where approximately $40,000 worth of bark was stored. When it was a certainty that the eight huge tanks containing the strong tanning extract would be devoured by the flames, Harp took several men, a light truck, and a Presno scraper, and working like madmen against heavy olds, an emergency dam of river gravel was thrown up to halt the stream of liquid, which would have been fatal to the fish had it reached Redwood Creek, only a few yards from the burning buildings. "Quick thinking, and willingness to help in any emergency is a part of every good deputy's mental and physical equipment. Deputy Harp's efficient work not only saved valuable property, but thousands of fish as well. It was fine work," E. L. Macauley, chief of patrol, declared upon receiving the report. When we stop for a moment to think of the many elements which go into law violation, our cosmopolitan population, our great wealth, our native organizing ability, which can be misdirected as well as properly directed, we can agree with Mr. Wickersham, the chairman of the commission, when he says that no one can realize, who has not looked into it, just how baffling and perplexing the question is. "There are forty-eight states and the federal jurisdiction," Mr. Wickersham declared, "yet there is no place where statistics concerning crime are assembled to which one can go and read them as one would read health statistics." In its effort to get a start on the problem the commission is going into the courts and police bureaus of the country for the figures. The work of assembling the statistics will therefore be necessarily slow and laborious. In addition there will be the hearing of witnesses and the assembling of opinion from men and women in every walk of life. The job is not one which can be done in a day and yet it is one which ought to be done as thoroughly as possible. There is no question that something can be done in an effort to arrest the crime evil in America. It is a national menace which can no longer be ignored. Those who oppose the theory of prohibition of the liquor traffic in America are wont to blame the crime wave on to the violation of the eighteenth amendment. But those who have studied the question, while admitting that bootlegging and hijacking form a serious problem, know that the causes are deeper than this. Others have blamed the crime wave on to the jet-down which followed the tension of the World War. But now that the period of re- Near Completion Of Game Preserve To Be Ready For the Birds Within Six Weeks, It Is Said It won't be long now! With the mammoth seven-acre cage that will house various kinds of game birds, practically completed a few miles from Chino, and the buildings for housing employees, incubators and supplies well on their way to the finished product, the Southern California game farm will soon be in full operation. A visit to the new game farm showed that great work has been done at that place. Located adjoining the beautiful Los Serranos Country Club about four miles from the city of Chino, in what has been termed ideal pheasant territory, the new plant being made ready for the Division of Fish and Game will take care of the needs of Southern California, as its capacity will be the same as the first game farm at Younville in the Napa Valley. New steel construction has been used in building the pens that will house the birds, and the home of the breeding birds and the young chicks will be as modern and sanitary as human ingenuity can make it. Within six weeks it is expected the workmen will gather up their tools and turn the place over to August Bade, superintendent of game farms, who will immediately place the necessary breeding stock to start things off right. In addition to the famous ring-neck pheasant, which has been liberated in large numbers throughout the state in carefully selected areas in the past three years, mountain and valley quail, wild turkeys and Hungarian partridges will be propagated in Southern California to in due time gladden the hearts of Southern California sportsmen. Propagation under Bade has been highly successful at Yountville, and the superintendent has voiced his enthusiasm over the prospects in the south. The plant here will be under Bade's supervision and competent trained bird men will be stationed here to see that the record made at Yountville is equal if not bettered, Bade insists. If the bootleggers get to making it much stronger it won't be long until the safe crackers will be using gin to eat their way into the burglar-proof vault. WHEREAS, said H.H. ORANGE COUNTY TITLE BY H.A.GA There is no question that something can be done in an effort to arrest the crime evil in America. But now that the period of reconstruction is over in America it would seem that this post-war relaxation ought to be about over. Yet the crime wave continues. The truth is, of course, that crime was on the increase before the war and before the eighteenth amendment was adopted. There were violations of the liquor laws even then and the liquor question was in politics, just as it is in some communities today. One notable fact is that the criminals of today are to be found in large part among the youth of the land. Just why this is true is probably due to one reason. It may be that the American home is not what it used to be in many instances, yet it is an undeniable fact that all over America there are millions of homes where parents try industriously to guide their children along proper paths, just as they have always done—and these homes are to be found in the city as well as in the country. Life today, and the rearing of children, is a much more complicated process than ever before. Therefore many people blame the crime wave in part at least on to the complications of modern civilization. But this is only passing the buck. The root of the evil must be found and when it is found it will doubtless be discovered also that the tree of iniquity has several roots. This is what makes the task of the new crime commission so difficult. No one remedy can be found because there is no single reason for the increase in crime. At any rate, President Hoover is to be commended for tackling this important problem in characteristic fashion. The high character of the members of the commission, and their intelligence and ability can assure us Propagation under Bade has been highly successful at Yountville, and the superintendent has voiced his enthusiasm over the prospects in the south. Maybe the girls don't wear ruffles on their dresses any more because it would look too effeminate. that a real effort will be made to find a solution or solutions; to the problem confronting them. And certainly every good citizen has it as a part of his duty to co-operate with the new commission in every way possible. We do not want America to be known as the most lawless of the civilized nations. The reputation is not an enviable one and in addition, the menace is one which knaws deeply into the fundamentals of the republic. NOTICE OF SALE OF REAL PROPERTY BY TRUSTEE UNDER DEED OF TRUST.
