Calliope Wail Graces Screen
"Dangerous Curves" Provides All Typical Sounds of "Big Top"
A sixty-four year old wall familiar to amusement seekers throughout the world has been brought to the motion picture screen. It is the tuneful whine of the circus stew calliope and it is heard in "Dangerous Curves," Clara Bow's new Paramount talking picture.
The steam calliope first joined the circus in 1885 with the Hagenback-Wallace show. It was a tremendous sensation and proved a great crowd gatherer. One by one the other shows took up the calliope until now it is as much a part of the circus as the "big top," lemonade, peanuts and elephants.
In every stand or town played the calliope provides part of the ballyhoo by parading the streets. In circus parlance this is called "tooting up."
All phases of circus life from the action in the rings to the colorful routine existence of the performers were pictured in the new Bow picture. The "It" girl portrays a performer who turns from an equestrian act to a clown stunt. Richard Arlen, her leading man, takes the part of a tight-wire performer.
"Dangerous Curves" will be the feature on the program at the Fox theatre Saturday and Sunday.

Scale Treatment To Begin at Once
Reports from various districts in Orange county show that the black scale hatch is nearing completion and treatment will start during the last few days of July for the control of this pest. Parts of the county have a very serious infestation this year due to late treatment and an uneven brood of scale during 1928.
It is interesting to note that the scale is hatching practically a month later than last year, due no doubt to the late spring season. This same lateness in the season has caused the new crop of fruit to be retarded in growth, so that in some cases fumigation will be postponed a few weeks to permit fruit to size up. Combination treatment work should start at once, where possible, in order that the entire territory may be covered during the effective season.
Detailed recommendations for citrus pest control for the season appeared in last month's news letter. The recommendations applicable at this time are here briefly summarized:
BLACK SCALE. Treat as soon as the scale have hatched and before they reach the invulnerable stage.
PURPLE SCALE. Early fumigation for black scale will, in most cases this year, partly control purple scale. A second fumigation may be necessary, however, seven to nine weeks after the black scale treatment. For heavy infestations along with black scale, the combination treatment, spraying followed within ten days by fumigation, gives the best known results on both scales.
RED SCALE. Resistant red scale or heavy infestations along with black scale are best controlled by the combination treatment. Ordinary infestations are best controlled in the winter time.

Complete Report On Fruit Fly
The most complete authentic information yet made available on the Mediterranean fruit fly will be mailed to citrus growers during the week of July 29 in the form of the Handbook of Citrus Insect Control for 1929, by R. S. Woglum, entomologist for the California Fruit Growers' Exchange.
Mr. Woglum has added a section on the fruit fly to his regular annual report and the exchange is mailing the booklet to all member growers, associations, district exchanges and field men. Copies will be mailed to non-exchange growers upon request to the Pest Control Bureau of the exchange.
Mr. Woglum had the cooperation of Dr. F. R. Cole, United States Bureau of Entomology, who prepared a number of charts and color plates on the fly. Exact color reproduction, enlarged of the Mediterranean fruit fly in all stages and of other common fruit flies, done by Dr. Cole, are declared to be the best and most helpful information yet published. A chart showing the complete life cycle of the fly and other maps, charts and photographic illustrations add to the handbook, which gives most complete information on detection and eradication of this serious pest.

EDUCATIONAL OUTLAY

The state, according to the state superintendent of public instruction, will apportion out among the fifty-eight counties, more than $26,500,000 for the fiscal year 1929-30 for the support of elementary and high schools and junior colleges of the state. This huge sum all goes for payment of salaries of teachers.
Add to this the immense sums raised by taxation each year by the counties and municipalities of the state for supFASTER SERVICE from ANAHEIM to the EAST!
