Worthless Checks Land Trio in Jail
Operated in County for Several Weeks Past
Three young men who are alleged to have been active in issuing and passing fictitious checks during the last two months, had a crimp put in their asserted activities when they were arrested by Deputy Sheriffs Harry Carter and Joe Scott and locked in the Orange county jail.
Two of the trio, Harold S. Kennedy, 18, photographer, 1845 Stanley street, Long Beach, and Lonnie Russ, 19, of 1045 Anaheim street, Long Beach, were arrested at Signal Hill, when Carter made a trip to Long Beach looking for them after he had arrested the third member, Charles W. Johnson, 20, a laborer, of 921 South Main street, Santa Ana.
According to Herman Zabel of the bureau of identification, the three are said to be about equally implicated in a series of bad checks issued in Orange county, Long Beach and Colton. The checks have been issued under the name of Harold Kennedy, Robert Davis Ray Olinger, Clyde A. Teeter, W. W. Dodson, S. S. Dillow and Lewis Collins, usually in amounts of $18.75. Zabel said and the total amount said to have been obtained is thought to run well over $200.
Five checks in Orange county, six or seven in Long Beach and two in Colton have been attributed to the activities of the group Zabel asserted, and added that there might be others out that had not yet been reported to the authorities.
Russ has given Santa Ana police trouble in the past, according to Deputy Carter, who stated that he had returned him to Santa Ana from El Paso several months ago, in connection with an investigation of a stolen car case. Carter said that it was believed that Russia became acquainted with Kennedy while in the El Paso jail, as Kennedy was a prisoner there at the same time and is alleged to have followed Russ to Long Beach upon his release.

Thousands Leave on Visit Back East
Twenty-Five Hundred Left On Union Pacific Wednesday
More than 2,500 persons left Wednesday from Central station and the new Union Pacific East Los Angeles station on the first day of the "back ast" excursions at reduced rates. It was revealed by George R. Bierman, general passenger agent of the Union Pacific.
Special arrangements were made with the motor coaches of the Union Pacific Stage company, and they left the terminals, East San Pedro, at 7:30 a.m., Glendale and Anaheim at 8 a.m., to make connections with the special at the East Los Angeles station.
In addition to the special there were also four sections of the Gold Coast Limited, two sections of the Los Angeles Limited, the extra-fare train, and two sections of the Continental Limited.
Additional sections of the Union Pacific trains will continue to leave daily to accommodate the heavy tourist travel this season, which will far surpass that of last year. Mr. Bierman declared.
An interesting fact was revealed by Mr. Bierman when he declared that the majority of the passengers leaving the first day of the reduced rates carried round-trip tickets and were making the trip only for pleasure and were not leaving Southern California permanently. Many of the passengers in the Irvine section.

The wets have been yelling a good deal about "life for a pint," and it probably is true that a good many lives have been snuffed out in the last few years because people have consumed even less than a pint of the stuff the bootlegger hands out.
