California Leads In Fishery Product
Over Half A Billion Pounds Is the Output For 1928
California's fresh fishery products lead the world. This industry, probably unknown to many, has been for many years one of the greatest of the industries of the Golden State, but it remained for the startling increase in 1923 to show world leadership with a production of over half a billion pounds of fish, 528,481,044 to be exact.
This figure, showing an increase over the production last year of 104,113,32 pounds, is taken from a report which is now in course of preparation for publication by S. H. Dado, of the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries, Division of Fish and Game.
Much of interest is contained in this mass of figures showing all of the fish taken in California waters and from south of the International boundary line brought into California.
Sardines, as usual, lead with 420,269-665 pounds as against 342,275,289 during 1927. The great increase in the production of mackerel is an interesting feature of the report, which shows that due to the greatly increased activity in the canning of this fine food fish, 35,251,298 pounds taken in 1928 place it in second place. This was an increase over 1927 of 30,522,395 pounds.
Third on the list we find bluefin tuna with 13,700,870 pounds. In 1927 4,898-386 pounds was considered an excellent record. Sole finished fourth with 10,-280,-19 pounds; rockfish fifth with 6,-414,-971; salmon totalled 4,478,566; barracuda, 4,385,214; skipjack, 4,262,732; snakes, 2,066,243; bonito, 1,317,963; herring, 1,139,682; halibut, 1,308,053 pounds.
Pompano totalled 3,295 pounds and pike 3,780 pounds, while 1,029 pounds of suckers were caught also. In the Sacramento-San Joaquin district 168 pound of terrapin were taken, and eels with 227 pounds remained the smallest figure on the list. However, this figure was increased from five pounds in 1927, 222 pounds being taken in the Los Angeles district and five in the San Diego district.

of obtaining such valuable statistics, which show California as the leading state in one of the greatest and oldest of all industries." N. B. Scofield, head of the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries declared after carefully examining the report, which will be ready for publication within a few weeks.
Attempt to Curb Billboard Matter
Advertising, too, is judged by the company it keeps and a forceful demonstration is made of this condition in the recent nation-wide attack that is being launched on objectionable advertising on both billboards and over the radio.
Homer D. King of the Hemet News hits the nail on the head in the following recent article:
"A billboard across from the News office carries a tobacco company advertisement picturing a boy and girl, heads together, each smoking a cigarette. It is an example of the increasing boldness of the billboard trust and some cigarette advertisers. Most newspapers would refuse to accept such an advertisement. The cigarette manufacturers kno wilt, so they are using the mediums of the billboard and the radio in their audacious campaign to encourage smoking among women and girls.
Not long ago the same billboard that this week carries the startling cigarette advertisement displayed a poster urging increased church attendance. This poster, is was explained in heavy type, was "donated to the churches of the community by the owners of this billboard." Ministers were advised by letter of what the billboard company was doing for them.
The ministers, we presume, were loud in their applause of the Christian spirit exhibited by the billboard trust. Ministers, charitable by nature and training, are not expected to look for niggers in woodpiles.
The purpose of the gratis "go to church" posters is, of course, to win ministerial support for billboards in the war that may soon wipe them from California landscapes. The same trick is being worked on the American Legion.
It would seem that the cigarette manufacturers and the billboard com-
Senate Committee Sidetracks Measure
Expressing disgust with the manner in which the senate judiciary committee refused to grant a hearing on the floor of the senate for Senate Bill 737, by Senator Frank Merriam of Long Beach, calling for publication of retractions in case of libel committed by a newspaper through error, Assemblyman Chris N. Jesperson of San Luis Obispo county today introduced a companion measure in the lower house.
"We'll start this bill through from the other direction," said Jesperson, "and see what happens."
There has been no fairer measure presented to this legislature, and yet the newspapers of the state were unable to get a fair hearing on the floor. Their bill is killed in committee.
"The senate judiciary committee has passed out bills of special interest to the legal fraternity, such as the one making the pay of superior court judges equal to that of the chief justice of the state supreme court, as well as many judicial council measures.
"Let's have a floor hearing on this libel bill, too. This measure is as fair to the plaintiff as it is to the defendant and merely straightens out the libel laws of the state which now, as evidenced by the recent Santa Cruz News case, do not permit a newspaper publisher to take the witness stand in his own defense in certain cases of erroneous libel.
"I'm going to see that this measure is given a fair hearing on the floor of the legislature."
This measure has the endorsement of the California Newspaper Publishers' Association and the California Press Association, representing most of the newspapers of the state.
Beet Thinner To Be Made At Davis
A mechanical beet thinner, planned to expedite the work of thinning sugar beets, is being made in the laboratories of the Agricultural Engineering Division of the University of California at Davis. Prof. H. B. Waller, head of the division, and Dr. W. W. Robbins, botanist, are co-operating in the planning of the machine.
he thinner is to be made on the principle of the cotton blocker, which has a knife swinging back and forth across the row at the surface of the soil. The beet thinner, however, will operate on fourrows at a time, the knives being spaced to correspond with the drills of the beet planter, which seeds four rows at a time.
While it is not hoped that all hand labor can be eliminated by the use of this implement, it is believed the work can be made much easier and can be done more rapidly and cheaply through its use.
