Broadcast On Farm Outlook Secretary Jardine, Senator McNary, Representative Haugen In Program Jan. 28. A nation-wide radio broadcast which will include talks by the secretary of agriculture, the chairmen of the agricultural committee of the two houses of Congress, leading agricultural economists in the government service, and music by the United States Marine band on Monday January 28, will take to the million and a half American farms equipped with radio sets the Department of Agriculture's statement of the agricultural outlook for 1929. The broadcast will be transmitted through a network of stations associated with the National Broadcasting company. This network will cover the nation from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast and from the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico. The program will open at 1:45 p.m., Eastern Standard time and will continue for one hour. Senator Charles L. McNary of Oregon, chairman of the committee on agriculture of the United States senate, and Congressman Gilbert N. Haugen of Iowa chairman of the like committee of the House of Representatives will join with Secretary William M. Jardine of the Department of Agriculture in pointing out to listeners the aid given by authoritative outlook information to the adjustment of the nation's agricultural production to the demand of consumers in this country and in the world. Secretary Jardine will briefly state the main factors in the foreign and domestic situation which will influence the market for this year's outturn of American crops and livestock. The chairman of the department's outlook committees on wheat, corn, tobacco, potatoes, hogs, beef cattle, dairy products and poultry will summarize the Newest of the new five months ago ~ and newest of the new today! A. basketball teams clash Saturday night, January 26, at the Olympic Auditorium in the first of a three-game series, a revised Trojan line up will probably take the floor in an attempt to break S. C.'s losing streak in conference games. Henry Cano and Aaron Nibley are slated to open for the Trojans in their customary forward places, but Jesse Mortensen, the lofty center, appears scheduled to make way for Frank Smith while Captain Lloyd Thomas and John Lehnerg, guards, will probably see a pair of sophomores, Ray Harris and Jim Truher, in their jobs. These were the changes in the lineup effected by Coach Leo Calland of the Trojans in the Occidental practice game Tuesday night and the Southern California coach has strongly intimated that he will stick to this combination as the starting five against the Bruins. In the Stanford game last Saturday night, inability to hit the bagket when repeated chances to score were presented again brought defeat to the Southern Californians. Statistics on the Card-Trojan contest reveal that the Southern Californians took 97 shots at the hoop from the field and scored only 12 goals while the Cardinals had only 57 cracks at the basket and made 13 field goals. The statigies show that the offensive system as worked out by Calland is doing its part in placing the Trojans in position to score and that it is the Southern Californians' inability to "hit their hat" when set for shots that has meant defeat in the three conference games played thus far this season. Staleness brought on by a strenuous football season is believed by Calland to be responsible for the hoop defeats of Troy, since Captain Thomas and Mortensen, both of whom were cage stars last year, had just finished a long season with Coach Howard Jones' grid team before reporting for basketball. It is to give Thomas and Mortensen a rest that Calland has decided to shift his lineup for the U. C. L. A. game, for without doubt these men will be back in the starting combination before the season has ended. Lehnera also needd a rest, in Calland's opinion, as he has borne the brunt of the Trojan attack throughout nearly all of the practice and conference games played to date, but there is a possibility that he will be back in the starting group by Saturday night. Changes in the U. C. L. A. lineup tried by Coach Caddy Works in the California series last week-end apparently did not strengthen the Bruins, and it is expected that Workg will go back to his old combination for the Trojan game. In this case the probable starting lineup for Saturday will be as follows: So. Calif. U.C.L.A. Nibley f. Wilde Cano f. Linthicum Smith c. Woodruff Harris g. Balter Truher g. Frank P. Moore, chairman of the Arizona Livestock Board, was expected to arrive here today to investigate conditions and it was believed locally that his findings will result in the lifting of Arizona's quarantine. The Federal Department of Agriculture of Canada issued a blanket quarantine order against livestock from the Pacific Coast states, Arizona and Nevada and from the states of Sonora and Lower California in Mexico. Only a small area near Whittier has been quarantined by the United States Department of Agriculture. Surveys of virtually all ranches in this vicinity have been made during the past few days, it was said, and no additional cases have been discovered. The 3,500 hogs which were infected on the ranch have been slaughtered and buried in quick time and a spraying and disinfecting apparatus has been brought home from treatment to completely wipe out all traces of the disease on the ranch. Several veterinary regularly emailed by the State Department of Agriculture, United States Bureau of Animal Industry and the Los Angeles County Livestock Department, and experienced in foot and mouth disease control work, have been concentrated in Los Angeles. Many of these veterinarians responded to the emergency call by driving all night in automobiles from various parts of the state. In addition, the federal government has augmented the regular force with trained man from surrounding states as a precautionary measure. Mealybug Survey To Be Started A survey of the mealybug infested area in Orange county will be started at once. The object of the inspection will be to determine the following: 1. The degree and extent of mealybug infestation; 2. The number of Cryptolaemus or other natural enemies present, if any; 3. Any of the factors affecting the infestation of mealybug by biological control methods; such as the presence of ants, recent treatment for other scale pests, or treatment proposed for them, size of trees, amount of crop, etc. If weather conditions permit it is expected that this first inspection will be finished by April 1, when a second systematic coverage will be made to determine the condition of the groves following the first spring generation of the mealybug in the field. Following previous practices, liberation of Cryptolaemus will be made on the heavier infestations first, then on the medium infestations and finally on the light infestations as far as production permits. Several heavy infestations have been reported during the winter months, due no doubt to the cessation of activity on the part of Cryptolaemus which do not reproduce to any extent after the latter WHILE Ethyl gasoline is of any car, it is an abscission motors. Several heavy infestations have been reported during the winter months, due no doubt to the cessation of activity on the part of Cryptolaemus which do not reproduce to any extent after the latter part of September in a normal seagon. The carry-over of large numbers of adult Cryptolaemus with a very low percentage of mortality in the field to date this winter, gives a good deal of encouragement as to the probable mealybug situation for the coming year. Cheesemaking Course at Davis Instruction in the technique of carrying starters, pasteurization of milk for cheese manufacture of various types of cheese is some of the work to be offered at the annual Short Course in Cheese Making, to be held at the University of California Division of Dairy Industry at the university farm, February 4 to 14. In making this announcement, Dr. C. L. Roadhouse, head of the division, points out that short courses also are to be given at the same time in market milk, butter, ice cream and dairy bacteriology. Cheddar cheese, Monterey cheese and Cottage cheese are manufactured regularly at the University Farm creamery; in addition the Edam, brick, limburger, Neufchatel and cream types are made by the students at intervals, and instruction will be given in their manufacture if requested by those enrolled. Anyone interested in the problems of dairy manufacturing, says Dr. Roadhouse, is eligible to attend those short courses. SOUTHERN COUNTIES GAS COMPANY WHILE Ethyl gasoline will improve the performance of any car, it is an absolute necessity in the newer high compression motors. If you are driving such a motor, with merely advanced spark, you must use Ethyl to enjoy full high compression performance—increased speed and power—less consumption and generally reduced operating costs. Developed after years of scientific research in the great laboratories of the General Motors Corporation, Ethyl was designed by automotive engineers as the only commercially practical substance that will overcome destructive "knock" and develop highest power and efficiency in any motor. A few years ago only one per cent of American automobile manufacturers produced high compression motors. Today, the result of Ethyl, there are more than fifty-six per cent.
