S.C. Edison Company Expects Great Year Heavy Increase in Business Already Assured The year 1929 is to be a year of great commercial activity for the Southern California Edison company in the Santa Ana district, according to word brought back by W. L. Delmling, district manager, from the annual district managers' meeting at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles Friday, December 28. "A quota of 6000 electric range sales is scheduled for the Southern California Edison company system for 1929," said Mr. Delmling. "Of this total, we in this district have promised to sell 245. Electric appliances of all kinds have taken hold of the popular fancy and the consumers' acceptance of the modern electric labor-saving devices is growing day by day. This is particularly true in the big territory comprising the SanJA Ana district." Throughout the United States the average kilowatt hour consumption by domestic consumers for all purposes is 429 kilowatt hours per year. On the lines of the Southern California Edison company records show a use of 560 kilowatt hours per consumer per year. This figure covers domestic use of electricity only. During the twelve months ending December 30, 1928, new business totaling 9663 horsepower was taken on the lines in the Santa Ana district. For the twelve months of 1929 a total of 13,200 horsepower of new business has been catalled for this district. This is an increase of 37 per cent and serves to indicate to some degree the growth which the Santa Ana district and the adjacent communities are enjoying. "Everything points to a big year in 1929," said Mr. Delmling. "All our estimates and anticipated accomplishments have been checked thoroughly. We know that Southern California must continue to grow and prosper and we are prepared to take care of the electrical needs of this entire territory." Scientists say that their investigations show that girls are born more talkative than boys. We always wondered why there was no remedy. Nicargi NEW YORK - CHICAGO - LONDON - SAN FRANCISCO - LOS ANGELES RAILROADS PROSPEROUS The very substantial increase in the earnings of the railroads during the fall, after many months of unsatisfactory business, indicates that the carriers have at last turned the corner. It is significant, too, that this increase has been most pronounced in the case of the western roads, which for years have been lagging behind the others in the matter of earnings. The situation a few weeks ago, with shrinking revenues and with employees on many lines asking for wage increases, did not look promising, and it was feared the roads were drifting back into the unfortunate state in which they were in 1917 when the government took control of them as a war measure. At that time the bureau of railway economics called attention to the declining revenues and asked the public to consider their bearing on the ability of the railroads to render efficient service. It was apparent that a further drop in earnings would have forced an increase in rates. It is to be hoped that the declining curve of railroad earnings touched bottom in September and that the carriers from now on will get their full share of the improved business which is reported as coming to other industries. The public is particularly desirous of hearing of railroad prosperity because it is an accurate barometer of business conditions generally and, as the employer of hundreds of thousands of men and as the consumer of vast quantities of raw and manufacturer materials, can do much to foster national prosperity.
