What Orange County Is Thankful For
Bountiful Crops and Good Prices Make Everybody Happy
By H. E. WAHLBERG
County Farm Advisor
Thanksgiving to the Easterner or Middle Westerner brings a picture of snow, the furnace fire, a cessation of most outside work on the farm and preparation for a long, cold, dreary winter. To the Southern Californian, native or adopted, Thanksgiving has a much different meaning. It is here the summer spends the winter. Outdoor life continues unabated in the sunshine; such work as needs be done on the farm, can go on almost uninterrupted. The vast network of good roads throughout our sunshine country offers a constant invitation to the lover of the outdoors to enjoy the countryside to the fullest extent.
Thanksgiving marks the close of the harvest of many major crops of Southern California—Valencia, Walnut, Limia beans, peppers, persimmons, deciduous fruits, sweet potatoes, sugar beets, alfalfa, tomatoes and a long list of miscellaneous crops. A few crops however, start their harvest season about this time—for example, the navel orange, the Fuente avocado and the winter vegetables. In either case, there is occasion for Thanksgiving, and 1928 has been no exception to the rule for most growers. I want to recite here some of the things for which growers in my own county of Orange have reason to be thankful, and much that applies to Orange county in this respect "goes" elsewhere in the Southland, also.
Oranges are again in the lead from an income standpoint in Orange county, though the crop was only 70 per cent that of last year. Notwithstanding this shortage in the citrus crop, the 1928 return of $25,000,000 to this county has only been exceeded by the 1927 returns, which reached the total of $28,000,000. The average box returns this year were somewhat higher than for last year, which accounts for the favorable figure for the smaller production. The citrus industry stands at the head of the farm.
Two co-operative packing-houses of the Southern California Persimmon Growers' association are running overtime, packing the fruit for the holiday trade. Fifty to sixty cars will be shipped to eastern markets and the balance will go to Paelfic Coast points. It looks like a good year for the persimmon grower and he can be thankful that most of the average and production is co-operatively handled, packed and shipped, as otherwise, the market would have been in a deplorable condition. Besides, he can decorate his Thanksgiving table with one of the most attractive fruits grown in California.
Grain growing has not been the most lucrative farm business in Orange county, first because it is dry-land farming and dependent largely on the rainfall, and second, because the average grower has not taken advantage of improved varieties and better seed for planting. Through the efforts of the agricultural extension service and grain growers department of the Farm Bureau, however, a great improvement has taken place in the grain industry of this county. Progressive growers have substituted Hero, Oregon Club Mariout and 4000 for the old common barley that has been used year in and year out for the two generations. Where the improved varieties have been used, the production per acre has been increased 50 to 200 per cent. The demand for the better seed is rapidly increasing. And now in 1928 another advance has been made after several seasons of agitation by the Farm Bureau grain department. Two seed dusting machines have been installed at the El Toro and Irvine warehouses. These installations will increase the yield of grain in these parts from 10 to 20 per cent and make a higher-quality product. It is an advance to be thankful for in this year of 1928.
Last and most important, all of Orange county can be grateful for the progress made toward the conservation of waste waters. The county flood control engineer, Paul Bailey, will soon have a definite plan for the people of the county to adopt, looking to the permanent conservation of flood waters. The permanency of agriculture here will depend upon the development of some constructive plan to catch and use every drop of water that falls in the county's watersheds to which the local commonwealth is legally entitled.

The citrus industry stands at the head of the farm businesses from a prosperity consideration at the present time, and merits the spirit of Thanksgiving from its constituents.
The walnut crop in Orange county did not fare so well this year, either in quantity or quality. Many groves are harvesting less than was anticipated and where control measures were not practiced, the quality of the crop was reduced by aphis and coiling moth infestations. This year will demonstrate clearly the effect of proper spraying for the commercial control of these pests. Packing-house crack tests are showing up the "dirty" groves caused by neglect or by use of wrong materials. The returns to the Orange county for 1928 will approximate $2,000,000, as compared with a little less than $4,000,000 last year. The walnut grower, however, does have something to be thankful for. Through the good sales campaign of the California Walnut Growers' association, the immense crop of 1927, the largest in the history of the industry, has been completely sold and there is no holdover, so far as the producer is concerned. This has made way for a good schedule of opening prices for the 1928 crop and will, no doubt, compensate in a measure for the short crop this year. It is also a cause for satisfaction that ways and means are available for satisfactory pest control in walnuts if they are judiciously and intelligently practiced by the grower.
The lima been industry fared well this year both as to crop and prices. The acreage was greater than that last year, the increase being due to the encouraging prices for this commodity during the last two or three years. Sugar beet growers in some sections are using this crop in their rotation scheme. Being a legume it has gained an enviable economic place amon field crops as an MORE... c er"u.... effective soil builder. The yields this year have been satisfactory in most sections, production ranging from 750 to 3500 pounds per acre. The dry land averaged 750 pounds, the irrigated about 1350 pounds. An unusual circumstance this year was the comparatively light straw yield from the bean vines, resulting in a shortage of straw for use as citrus fertilizer. The price to the producer was around $8 to $10 per ton loose—a high mark for bean straw. The consumer or fruit grower held as high as $15 to $16 per ton in the bale delivered to the orchard.
The bean grower is celebrating Thanksgiving this year with prospects
Southern California Starts Basketball
Coach Leo Calland, developer of championship teams, this week called his 1928-29 Trojan basketball candidates together for their first workout and began laying plans for his newest court campaign. The goal of which is a second straight Pacific Coast Conference casaba title for Southern California.
Already Calland has a record for coaching championship squads that is hard to beat. The last four teams with which he has been associated have won or tied for conference titles. In the spring of 1927 when he was director of athletics at Whittier College, he coached the Poet basketball team to a tie for the Southern Conference title and in the fall of the same year he came back to Southern California, his Alma Mater, and was line coach of the varsity football team that tied with Stanford for the Pacific Coast Conference championship.
Last winter and spring, in his first season as varsity basketball coach at Southern California, his squad won the Coast Conference crown, and this fall his freshman football team at S.C. won the "Little Big Three" title and went through the season undefeated and unscored on.
Seven of the letter men of Calland's championship court squad will return for the team this season, these being Captain-elect Lloyd Thomas and Johnny Lehners, guards; Jesse Mortensen, center; and Lowry McCasilin, Aaron Nibley, Harmon Hirdler and Henry Cano, forwards. He will be without the services of Thomas, Mortensen and McCasilin until after the Notre Dame football game December 1, as all three are prominent members of Coach Howard Jones' Trojan grid squad.
Missing from the championship basketball squad will be Captain Jack Bruner. All-Coast center; Tommy Lewis, guard, and Charley Bone, forward.
A good curry of lamb can be made of lean cooked lamb chopped in small pieces. To each 3 cups of the meat allow ½ cups of chopped celery and per-quality product.
Orange county can find ample reason for celebration from the fact that a real start has been made during 1928 toward such plant of conservation. This plan makes safe for future generations, as well as our own, the supply of water so essential to a growing and intengively developed community.

year have been satisfactory in most sections, production ranging from 750 to 3500 pounds per acre.
The bean grower is celebrating Thanksgiving this year with prospects of good returns when they are all in. The trade indications are that the 1928 crop will be well cleaned up before the next crop is harvested, which also contributes a good feeling for the coming season. The 1928 bean crop will return over $2,500,000 to Orange county.
Growing and maturing conditions were just right this year for the sugar beet crop. Usually the yield gives way to high sugar content or vice-versa, but this year has seen a happy combination of good yields and good sugar tests. Although the harvest campaign is not yet completed, the crop records so far indicate a heavier average yield for Orange county. Where it usually is around eight tons per acre, the present crop, based on available figures, will average close to ten tons per acre. The sugar tests run from 18 to 20 per cent, in comparison with 16 to 17 per cent of ordinary years.
The sugar beet deal looks better this year than it has for several seasons and will probably result in renewed interest on the part of many growers in this crop.
Nineteen hundred and twenty-eight has produced the biggest persimmon crop yet. The new acreage that has been planted during the past five or six years is now coming into commercial bearing. The latest survey of the industry in Orange county, made by the agricultural extension service, shows a total of almost 700 acres devoted to persimmon growing. The crop which is now being harvested and packed will approximate 900 tons. Practically every orchard is picking more fruit than estimated in the early part of the season and the quality is also very satisfactory.
A good curry of lamb can be made of lean cooked lamb chopped in small pieces. To each 3 cups of the meat allow 1½ cups of chopped celery and tops, 1 medium sized onion chopped, % cup of brown gravy or broth, 3 tablespoons of butter, % teaspoon of curry, 3 dashes of tabasco, and salt to taste. Brown the celery and onion in the butter. Add the meat, gravy, and seasonings. Stir until well mixed and hot. If too dry, add one-half cup of boiling water. Serve with a border of flaky rice, garnished with parsley.
The modern husband is safer than the head of the house was thirty years ago. The rolling pin has vanished and the broom is rapidly giving way to the vacuum cleaner.
The old-fashioned man who used to smile when he took a drink now confines it to coughing.
