Forest Committee Meets at Santa Ana Question of Raising $20,000 Fund Was Discussed The Tri-Counties Reforestation committee met at Santa Ana Thursday, October 11th. About twenty members were present. S. B. Show, U. S. District Forester, L. M. Deering from the same office, S. A. Nash-Boulden, Forest Supervisor, and Geo. H. Cecil, Forest Supervisor, were present. The question of raising funds to meet the federal appropriation of $20,000 was one of the principal matters discussed by those present. As a result of the discussion it appeared that Riverside and San Bernardino counties would attempt to raise their portion of the $20,000 fund by inducing the packers and shippers of oranges to pay $1.00 per carload of branges shipped, while those from Orange county thought it would be better in that county to raise money from the general fund from the Board of Supervisors. A recommendation of the Finance committee to this effect was adopted by the general committee. The chairman was authorized to use his best endeavors to secure state and federal assistance in utilizing the unemployed in times of labor slack in this work; and also was instructed to communicate with authorities in Washington requesting that there be no distraction in the funds for carrying on the work of Forest Experiment Stations in California, as it was agreed that the necessity for obtaining all possible information on this subject was very great at the present time, in view of the disastrous fires which recently occurred. J. J. Prendergast of Redlands gave a very interesting and helpful detailed report of the recent fires in Mill Creek and the Santa Ana, the method of combatting the same and of handling the men. While he suggested that it might have been better to have had more men for supervision, at the conclusion of his remarks he stated that he was for the Forest Service one hundred per cent. Tuberculosis in Cattle on Decline By W. M. CORY. Assistant Farm Advisor Loss from disease is the most serious foe that confronts the dairyman and livestock producer. A consistent battle is being waged against the major infectious diseases, namely bovine tuberculosis and contagious abortion by government authorities and owners of livestock. It is gratifying to note that success is following the campaign but in certain sections there still remains a lot to be done. From surveys conducted by the Bureau of Animal Industry, United States Department of Agriculture, the status of bovine tuberculosis shows a livestock infection for the United States of: Year Per Cent Tuberculosis 1922 4.0 1924 3.3 1926 2.8 1928 2.0 The areas still having the greatest per cent of infection are the North Atlantic States, the North Central States and certain counties of California. Orange county can feel proud of the progressiveness of her dairymen and livestock breeders by the fact that less than 3% infection exists here among livestock, whereas in some counties the infection runs over 15%. However there is an economic loss where 3% exists, so that this figure needs reduction as rapidly as possible. To better comprehend the extent of the campaign for tuberculosis eradication on September 20th, there were 568 counties in the modified accredited areas wherein the extent of the disease does not exceed one-half of one per cent and work is making good progress in 600 other counties. At present there are 169,000 accredited herds containing 2,240,000 cattle. Approximately $2,000,000 cattle are now under State and Federal Supervision. Clean-Up Campaign By Pepper Growers By ERIC E. EASTMAN Assistant Farm Advisor The Pepper Growers' Department of the Orange County Farm Bureau, at a recent meeting in Garden Grove, decided to wage a clean-up campaign this Fall against their old enemy, the pepper weevil, and resolved that not one pepper stock should be left standing in Orange county on December 5th. A letter is to be sent to all growers informing them what the most effective method of control known at the present time is the extermination of the old and immature weevils during the Fall by thoroughly plowing under and burying all parts of the pepper plants immediately after the last pickling. This process kills the eggs and immature beetles and destroys the food plants upon which the mature beetles feed and winter over. Nightshade plants also serve as feeding and breeding places for the pepper weevil, and are to be eradicated wherever found—about buildings, ditches, roadsides, etc. This program of thoroughly cleaning up all pepper fields and grubbing out all Nightshade plants will remove all known sources of infestation, so that the expense and difficulty of pest control will be largely eliminated for next year, and greater profits come to the growers.
