Mineral Production Of Golden State Orange County Output Sixty-Three Millions Last Year California may be a paradise for emigrating Iowans, Kansans and Nebraskans; it may be a temporal heaven for sportsmen; indeed, it may be many things, but it will ever remain the "pot of gold" at the end of the miner's rainbow. Perhaps the old "desert rat" or "pocket hunter" is now seen less than in the days of yore, but the mining industry has taken great strides and now surpasses any other state in number and variety, says Lloyd L. Root, state mineralologist. The total mineral production value in California during the last year is conservatively estimated at $377,205,000, and the total production value in Orange county, $63,223,082, according to Root. "The mineral industries in California have reached quite a different phase from that of the old gold-rush days more than 50 years ago." Root said. "A broader and more intimate status has been attained, touching practically every avenue of domestic and commercial endeavor. "Marketing is quite a factor in the new phase of mining. The old timer could, and still does, take his metal to the mint and receives its equivalent in the 'coin of the realm'; and he knows from day to day and year to year, without variation, just how much each ounce of gold will bring in that coin. Marketing and competition, however, are vital factors in the industrial and structural groups of mining. "Few people realize the importance of this state as a producer of commercial minerals. The total value of output has been surpassed by not more than four or five states, and no other equals outside the United States." Those states which do exceed California are usually the great coal states Rare Treat For Visitors of Note Richfield Oil Co. Will Show Them California in Great Plane Distinguished visitors to the Pacific Coast—domestic and foreign—have in the past been given official sight-seeing tours by the state executives in motor cars, trains and ocean liners. Herafter, now that a giant de luxe "air yacht" has been placed at the Vaposal of the Pacific Coast state officials such visitors will be enabled to get a genuine birds-eye view of the grandeur and glory of the gorgeously scenic states—California, Oregon and Washington. Perhaps no announcement in recent months has created quite the interest that did the one made by officials of the Richfield Oil company following the arrival from New Jersey on the Pacific Coast of the huge blue and gold, tri-motored Fokker monoplane—literally an nerial palace car. This announcement was to the effect that the Richfield company, ardent booster of aviation and naturally strong for the Pacific West, had purchased this big de luxe air liner specifically for the use by governors and lieutenant-governors. These executives—of the three Pacific states—have just been invited in a letter dispatched from Richfield headquarters to commandeer the big plane at any time they wish. "Not for official business, rather for personal entertainment and for showing important western visitors the glories of this country," explained an oil company official, elaborating on the announcement. The great plane, declared the finest ever manufactured in America, is an "extra-fine edition" of the huge Fokker multi-passenger "ships" which now play regularly between San Francisco and Los Angeles on the Western Air Express passenger route. Though a sister ship to these, it is far finer and much more elaborately fitted. The cabin contains a kitchenette, re-tificate No. 4578. Official Records, in the County Recorder of California; and filed Many Fishermen After Golden Trout Flocking to the High Sierras in Pursuit of Speckled Beauties July first marked the opening of the Golden Trout season and many shortmen and enthusiastic fishermen are now seeking the habitats of these rare specimens of "Golden Beauties." One of the most accessible as well as most beautiful regions of the High Sierra District where Golden Trout as well as Loch Leven, Eastern Brook, Rainbow and Steelhead may be secured is in the Big Pine Creek district and in the numerous glacier-fed lakes and nearby canyons. Reached from Los Angeles by a ride of seven or eight hours, the route to this scenic mountain region which rivals Yosemite in beauty, lies over paved road to Saugus and Moline, thence over wide graded gravel road with some chucky sections to Indian Wells; with the same type of surface, somewhat corrugated for a distance of ten miles leading into Lone Pine followed by good graded gravel for 3 miles, excellent oil gravel to Manzanar and good graded gravel to Independence. Oiled gravel is traversed for 9 miles, with one-half width concrete for 8 miles and good gravel and oiled gravel into Big Pine. At this point the motorist turns left and follows a good mountain road, with some narrow sections, a distance of eleven miles to Glacier Lodge, where one may secure horses for the ride into Big Pine Canyon to the string of beautiful lakes above. A ride of two or three hours by horseback brings one to an elevation of 11,000 feet, at the Upper Camp, surrounded by crystal lakes and with Incomparable views of the nearby Pallade Glacier and ragged, barren mountain peaks. The cabin contains a kitchenette, refrigerator, table, eight oversuffted chairs and a complete sending and receiving radio set. Powered, as are the Western Air Express planes, with three Wasp motors, it has a top speed greater than 150 miles per hour and a normal cruising speed of about 125 m.p.h. New Association Joins Exchange By a unanimous vote of the stockholders, the Carpenteria Mutual Citrus Association, Carpenteria, Santa Barbara county, recently joined the California Fruit Growers' Exchange, according to a statement from the latter organization. The association handles the lemons from a number of the best groves in Santa Barbara county and is a desirable addition to the big co-operative. The fruit represented was formerly marketed through the exchange up to about a year ago when the new association was formed. Practically all the growers are old exchange members who have always believed in co-operative marketing of their fruit. George Bliss is president and Percy Houts is manager of the new association which is affiliated with the Ventura County Citrus Exchange, the local district exchange at Santa Paula. About 60 cars of lemons will be shipped this season. Expert Entomologist Talks About Pests In outlining to the board of directors the work of the Pest Control Bureau of the exchange during the past year, Entomologist Woglum stated that the main purpose of the work is to establish a sound program of pest control in every district—a program based on the most effective, economical and safest insecticide methods known. Mr. Woglum discussed with charts the most effective methods for the control of various pests, commenting on the effect of temperature and humidity on several, which indicated that climatic conditions limit the districts in which these pests work. The report in booklet form, under the title, "Handbook of Citrus Insect Control for 1928," has been mailed to all exchange growers. The booklet contains definite recommendations for control in each of the citrus districts with Bank of Los Angeles, legal owner and holder of deed of trust on March 31st to be recorded in the office Recorder of Orange forms, a notice of such its election to cause the scribed in said deed of trust in accordance with the pre-statement in said deed of trust in the obligation created by notice of default and was duly recorded in B485. A big builder who has large undertakings in various cities was asked the day after the Houston convention if he was planning on any curtailment of his developments. He replied promptly that having listened to the democratic national convention he was really expanding his line. "That was all I needed," he said. "I figured they were going to have harmony at Houston even if they had to fight for it, but when I read their platform, which in its serious parts was only an imitation of what the Republicans had said, I made up my mind that the people of the country would appreciate that as between the real thing and the substitution of an imitation, that there would be no doubt as to their choice. The country is prosperous," he continued. "but not so prosperous that it can afford the luxury of a democratic administration, and that is why the Republicans will win." NOTICE INVITING PROPOSALS FOR CONCRETE WORK Notice is hereby given that sealed proposals will be received by the City Council of the City of Anaheim, at the office of the City Clerk of said city, up to the hour of 8 o'clock P.M. of Thursday, the 12th day of July, 1928, for furnishing to said city all labor and concrete material required for approximately 68 cubic yards of concrete in engine foundation in the city power house. Plans may be seen and further information secured at the office of the city engineer, and all proposals must be on forms furnished by said engineer. The City Council of said city reserves the right to reject any and all proposals. Dated this 18th day of June, 1928. EDWARD B.
