Wahlberg Advises On Walnut Pruning
All Young Trees Should Be Pruned in Summer
For the first four years of a walnut tree's life all pruning should be done in the summer, according to Harold E. Wahlberg, farm adviser. "This pruning should not be done all at one time, but should be in the nature of control of growth and continued training along lines determined upon by the grower," he continued.
"Young walnut trees grow very rapidly. Their training should begin the first summer in the ground. The grower should establish in his mind first what general type of tree he wants. This decision should be based upon a factor of strength and tree permanency."
"A walnut tree lives to be forty, fifty, sixty or one hundred years old. Therefore there has to be a strong framework. A grape vineyard lives perhaps 15 years, yet we recognize that a grape vineyard must be trained during the second and succeeding years very carefully to establish its growth in the proper manner.
"A walnut grove is far more worthy of care than a grape vineyard. Weight distribution is about the most important element of strength in an old tree. This means that permanent lateral branches must be some distance apart on the trunk and also that they should be distributed around the circumference of the trunk approximately an equal distance from each other.
"It is the experience of many that a somewhat 'central leader' type of tree is better than the old-fashioned 'open vase' type, as far as strength is concerned."

ELECTORAL VOTE 'ZONES'
This is the way the states, which will cast 531 electoral votes, may be divided (more or less arbitrarily) geographically:
(A vote of 266, or a majority of the whole number of 531, will be required for the election of the nominee who will assume the Presidency March 4, 1929.)
New England (6 states, 44 votes): Connecticut 7, Maine 6, Massachusetts 18, New Hampshire 4, Rhode Island 5, Vermont 4.
"Middle Atlantic" (5 states, 108 votes): Delaware 3, Maryland 8, Pennsylvania 38, New Jersey 14, New York 45.
"Solid South" (19 states, 114 votes): Alabama 12, Arkansas 9, Florida 6, Georgia 14, Louisiana 10, Mississippi 10, North Carolina 12, South Carolina 9, Texas 20, Virginia 12.
"Border States" (4 states, 51 votes): Kentucky 13, Missouri 18, West Virginia 8.
"Southwest" (3 states, 16 votes): Arizona 3, New Mexico 3, Oklahoma 10.
"Lake States" (4 states, 67 votes): Indiana 15, Michigan 15, Ohio 24, Wisconsin 13.
"Corn Belt" (7 states, 82 votes): Illinois 29, Iowa 13, Kansas 10, Minnesota 12, Nebraska 8, North Dakota 5, South Dakota 5.
"Mountain States" (6 states, 24 votes): Colorado 6, Idaho 4, Montana 4, Nevada 3, Utah 4, Wyoming 3.
Pacific Coast (3 states, 25 votes): California 13, Oregon 5, Washington 7.
The ten states of the "Solid South" cast the largest group of votes—114. The "Middle Atlantic" group is next in strength with 108 votes. The "Corn Belt" states, seven in number, have 82 votes.
The four industrial states of what was once known as the "Middle West" (before the political title of "Corn Belt") became attached to the other states of the old "Middle West") all border on the Great Lakes, and a part of their problems (as they will be stressed to the delegates both in Kansas City and Houston) is similar in a marked degree to those of the "Corn Belt" states. These four states have a voting strength of 67.
The "Solid South" has been uniformly Democratic since the era of "Reconstruction" passed completely away. Its 114 votes are claimed by the Democrats every four years and there is never any disposition by the foremost G. O. P. leaders of the nation to dispute this claim. The Democratic nominee must win 152 additional votes in the rest of the country to be elected.

One of the features brought out very forceibly in the novel orange show display of West Brothers was the new improved India tire, carrying a remarkable guarantee of 20,000 miles.
This concern has been operating in Anaheim for the past eight years, and each year they make special efforts towards bringing before the public eye the various items they have to sell, and they are very efficient in the methods they use to bring this about.
OUR FLAG
In 1775, the continental congress appointed a committee to suggest a single flag for the thirteen colonies. This flag had thirteen alternate stripes of red and white with an azure corner bearing-the-red cross of St. George and the white cross of St. Andrew. This flag was used by John Paul Jones on the flagship Alfred, but there was much dissatisfaction because it bore a design so distinctive of the flag of England.
On June 14, 1777, congress provided "That the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes of alternating red and white; and that the Union be thirteen stars, white, on a blue field, representing a new constellation."
From that date to this the Stars and Stripes has never engaged in an unworthy cause, has no taint of scandal or dishonor, and today represents the mightiest nation in the world.
The celebration of Flag Day, as conducted all over the country on June 14, is not merely an occasion for the exhibition of surface emotion; nor is it designed simply to provide an opportunity for public display; nor to arouse a mere temporary patriotic enthusiasm.
Its purpose is to teach in an entertaining and effective manner what the American flag really typifies: to impress upon the minds of all the martyrs that has glorified it, and to inspire in every heart that true patriotism which prompts to peace time loyalty and devotion no less than six time sacrifice.
CHEAP LABOR AND TARIFE
Those who attempt to preach to the American worker that foreign competition is a myth, and that the tariff is simply a bulwark for theattening of the industrial captains of America would do well to read an extract from a recent issue of the Berliner Tageblatt relative to conditions under which European labor works to produce articles in competition with our own workmen. It is a description of conditions in the Leuna Works where some 30,000 men are employed. The morning arrival is being pictured and the translation runs as follows:
"Everyone started at a trot for the rangeways leading to the narrow gates
BRULE AS THE HUB
As Calvin Coolidge knows his Parkman and, therefore, New France, he is aware that the region where he will spend his vacation this year is the hunting ground of the Brule Indians, and the scene of the heroic labors of Father Allouez among the red men.
Indeed, were he to mount a very slight distance in an airplane at night, and look to the west, he would see the thousands of glimmering lights on the docks at Allouez on the Bay of Saint Louis.
All about the summer White House are reminders of the time when the Jesuit fathers, the voyageurs and the trappers were undergoing hardships and sufferings of such intensity as to make their life an integral part of the history of civilization in North America.
Although there are three cities with an aggregate population of more than 170,000 within easy motoring distance of the President's vacation camp, he is as shut away from urban life as he was a year ago at the State Lodge, some distance from Rapid City.
Great walls of rock rose on either side of the South Dakota trout streams; this year there will be great walls of cornfields, and he will be able to go for miles without beholding the slightest indication of a human habitation.
The Henry Clay Pierce estate on the Brule is wide as well as long, and if solitude and fish are the things most desired, the President will not for a single minute be disappointed.
What has become of the good old-fashioned political days when the editor of the official Republican organ and the editor of the official Democratic organ wouldn't speak as they passed by?
Well, the pacifists have made some success in reducing the amount of armor. The corset seems to have about passed out of public life.
Those who attempt American worker that foreign competition is a myth, and that the tariff is simply a bulwark for theattening of the industrial captains of America would do well to read an extract from a recent issue of the Berlin Tausendblatt relative to conditions under which European labor works to produce articles in competition with our own workmen. It is a description of conditions in the Leuna Works where some 30,000 men are employed. The morning arrival is being pictured and the translation runs as follows:
"Everyone started at a trot for the gangways leading to the narrow gates admitting the employees to the grounds. We passed in one by one, every man inspected. Each must show his employment card to the gateman. From time to time some one was picked out of the line and handed over to a special inspector. Possibly an agitatory pamphlet had been found in his possession. Of the men thus pulled out of the lines, every fourth or fifth was ordered into a dressing room. 'Hands up.' The inspector's skilled fingers glided quickly over the suspect's body; he must empty his pockets, and if there was anything suspicious must disrobe. Except at the Leuna Works and the works at Leverkusen and Oppau, only the kaffirs in the South African diamond mines are, so far as I know, subjected to this indignity."
Is it any wonder, under these conditions, our foreign competitors are able to undersell our American workmen? Is any better evidence needed as to the necessity of a tariff?

West Brothers have exhibited at every California Valencia Orange Show, with the exception of one year, and each year they put forth every effort towards making the show a success by the novel displays they achieve.
They are Orange county distributors for India trees, and they have a tire that is one of the foremost leaders in the tire world today and one that they can be proud to exhibit.
The camping equipment displayed at their booth was brought about through the courtesy of the Pacific States Equipment Company. This consisted of the Champion Tuk-a-way steel bed, the first and only folding bed built for rear wear, and the Poncho mattress, a combination that would make any vacation outfit complete.
The demonstrations will feature proper methods of scraping and disinfection. Opportunity also will be given to see scaly bark scraping done a year ago. In order the growers may recognize the difference between the healing process and the diseased bark. Some growers are doing unnecessary scraping on treated areas that are going through the healing process.
Demonstrations will be held as follows:
Tuesday, June 19, 2 p.m.—Place of Rose Shafer, Tustin, on First street, one-fourth mile east of Prospect avenue.
Wednesday, June 20, 10 a.m.—Place of David Clough, south of Olive, on corner of Tustin and Taft avenues.
Other districts will have demonstrations later and will be announced in this paper.
Fumigating and Spraying of Trees
Citrus growers of Southern California will gather at Fullerton on Saturday, June 30, to receive the latest information on citrus pest control problems, according to announcement from the farm advisor's office. Prominent entomologists have been scheduled to report on various phases of the pest problems.
Spraying vs. fumigation will be one of the outstanding discussions of the day. Mr. R. S. Woglas, entomologist of the California Fruit Growers' Exchange, will present data and charts showing comparative results of the two methods of scale control. These data have been secured from scale inspections in all sections of Southern California.
During the day the growers will be shown a typical Orange county grove that has been treated by both methods. This will give them an opportunity to see first-handed the effect of each method on the tree, as well as scale kill.
Other discussions of the day will cover "Argentine Ant Control," "The New Mealybug Parasites From Australia," "The Quarantine as It Effects the Citrus Industry."
The county insectary at Anaheim will also be visited, where millions of mealybug predators are being raised for field distribution.
HAS BEST OF TRADE
Treasury experts assert that payments on foreign debts bring $206,000 to our treasury. This is exactly offset by sums sent home by inmigrants. Our trade balances with Europe amounts to about $500,000,000 per year. This is more than offset by the $617,000,000 spent in Europe each year by American tourists.
In addition to this, America expends $43,000,000 in charitable contributions and $22,000,000 for freight on foreign ships. According to Mr. Hoover, these sums almost exactly offset the net amount paid America by foreigners for interest on their private debts and upon their war debts.
Europe is still further benefited by American capital investment and loans to the amount of nearly $14,000,000,000. According to these figures, Europe should be sitting easy so far as trade balances are concerned with the United States.
