New Method Found For Growing Crops Soil Not Needed, According to Scientific Experimenters No longer need one long for broad acres to go into farming. In fact, you don't even need sunlight to grow bumper crops. University of California experimenters have shown. Instead, certain equipment is necessary. Nevertheless, splendid roses, begonias and other flowers are being produced on plants that have not known soil since their seedling growth. And at the College of Agriculture, in Davis, a splendid wheat crop was grown without soil or sunlight, maturing in 13 weeks. It certainly looks like the last emancipation for the soil tillers. No more "sod-busting," no more cultivating, harrowing or handling of teams or tractors. Jars of water can replace flower and truck gardens, according to one set of experiments. Dr. W. F. Gericke, associate plant physiologist in the experiment station, is the creator of the "soil-less" flowers and vegetables. He does with "food pills" for the plants, with a different chemical compound for each different type of plant. The proper chemical treatment is given the water in a jar and the bulb, root, or seed of the plant desired is inserted in the jar. Thereafter, the plants need no attention. They grow their own roots, are stronger than soil-grown varieties, develop faster, bloom oftener and, in the case of flowers, attain more brilliant colors. Dr. Gericke also is trying to obtain additional beauty of color and odor through chemical means. Several varieties of roses, sweet williams, zinnias, pansies, carnations, begonias and different kinds of vegetables have been thus produced in Dr. Gericke's greenhouse. Wheat, grown without soil or sunlight, but of a better quality than the national interest is being shown in the "Race of Century' Attracts Interest" Paddock and Borah to Contest in Olympic Finals, June 16 National interest is being shown in the "Race of Century,'" the classic 100 meters dash among the world's fastest sprinters which will feature the Southwest Olympic finals at the Los Angeles coliseum June 16. All Southern California will turn out to see this event, and the eyes of the entire world will be focused on Los Angeles, awaiting the outcome of the speed duel between Charley Paddock, the "fastest human," and Charley Borah. It is anticipated that a capacity crowd of 80,000 people will turn out to see a race that will live in world's history like the famous original run of Phillipedes carrying news of the battle of Marathon, out of which grew the modern marathon that is always regarded in Europe as the classic event of each Olympiad. Americans consider the 100 meters dash the Olympic classic, and this event far overshadows the marathon insofar as interest in this country is concerned. For this reason Americans everywhere are wondering who will win the 100 meters run at Amsterdam this summer. They are interested to know whether we have in this country a man capable of defeating Koernig, the great German sprinter. In seeking to find a man capable of matching strides with Koernig, track fans naturally turn to Paddock, 100 meters champion in the 1920 Olympiad, and to Borah, national 100 yards champion in 1926. Borah is generally rated a favorite to win the 100 meters dash at Amsterdam, but many doubt his ability to defeat Paddock. Others believe that the two California schoolboys, Frank Wykoff and Frank Lombardl, will prove the sensations of the June 16 race. Wagering is heavy on the outcome of this race, with Paddock a 10 to 8 favorite to win and Wykoff a heavy play offish ahead of Lombardl. Wheat, grown without soil or sunlight, but of a better quality than the ordinary wheat, has been produced in a thirteen weeks' experiment by Prof. R. A. Davis, division of agricultural chemistry, and Prof. D. R. Hoagland, division of plant nutrition, at the College of Agriculture. Jars of water, containing the chemical elements needed for plant growth, were used as "soil." For the "sun," ultra-violet rays from a battery of argon-filled lamps of 300-candlepower each. Application of the lights for 16 hours a day brought rapid growth. Doubling the number of lights quadrupled the growth rate. The experiment proved that all the sun rays essential to plant growth were present in the electric glares. Previous troubles with the infra-red, or heat ray, was oblated in this experiment by use of an electric fan to circulate the air in the wheat field without soil or sun. Through the application of the lights, the wheat was grown to maturity in 13 weeks. Under field conditions, five months are required for this same growth. All of the runners are training hard in the hope that a new world's record may be made that will stand for many years.
