Result of Treatment For Walnut Pests
Season Approaching When Trees Need Attention
Walnut growers are approaching that season of the year when they turn their attention to pest control. Therefore a report at this time regarding such work carried on in Orange county last year may prove of value in determining the program for this coming spring and summer.
The following has been compiled from reports sent to the horticultural office:
Aphis spraying, 1927, 825 trees, $0.532 per tree.
Worm spraying, 1926, $0.47 per tree; 1927, 1082 trees, $0.786 per tree.
Worm and aphis spraying, 1926, 1870 acres, $0.59 per tree; 1927, 13,409 trees, $0.662 per tree.
Aphis dusting, 1927, 22,370 trees, $0.199 per tree.
Worm and aphis dusting, 1926, 2297 acres, $0.58 per tree; 1927, 2520 trees, $0.553 per tree.
Worm dusting, 1926, $0.46 per tree.
Approximate total treated, 2010 acres. Total spent, $16,028.
Following is the treatment applied in experiments:
Dust twice for aphis, spray for worms, two orchards, mould 3.00 per cent, worms 4.80 per cent, shrivel 7.80 per cent, black .89 per cent, light 55.18 per cent, amber 26.23 per cent.
Combination dust, 17 orchards, mould 3.06 per cent, worms 3.34 per cent, shrivel 17.54 per cent, black .69 per cent, light 46.24 per cent, amber 25.00 per cent.
Self-mixed combination, one orchard, mould 2.83 per cent, worms 4.22 per cent, shrivel 27.78 per cent, black 1.32 per cent, light 34.88 per cent, amber 22.29 per cent.
Spray for worms and aphis, 13 orchards, mould 3.70 per cent, worms 1.59 per cent, shrivel 17.16 per cent, black
State Government’s Financial Statistics
What It Cost to Run California During Last Fiscal Year
The Department of Commerce announces a summary of the financial statistics of the state of California for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1927. The per capita figures for 1927 are based on an estimated population of 4,375,000.
The payments for operation and maintenance of the general departments of California amounted to $60,-409,900, or $13.81 per capita. This includes $22,964,209, apportionments for education to the minor civil divisions of the state. In 1926 the comparative per capita for operation and maintenance of general departments was $14.48 and in 1918, $7.18. The payments for operation and maintenance of public service enterprises in 1927 amounted to $2,046,169, interest on debt, $4,839,056; and outlays for permanent improvements, $14,235,821. The total payments therefore for operation and maintenance of general departments and public service enterprises for interest and outlays were $81,530,946. The totals include all payments for the year whether made from current revenues or from the proceeds of bond issues.
Of the governmental costs reported above,$16,087,711 was for highways,$6,214,284 being for maintenance and$9,873,427 for construction.
The total revenue receipts were $81-944,960, or $20.33 per capita. This was $21,649,835 more than the total payments of the year; exclusive of the payments for permanent improvements and $7,414,014 more than the total payments including those for permanent improvements. This excess of revenue receipts is reflected in purchase of investments and increased cash balances not shown in this summary. Property and special taxes represented 20.4 per important contribute highway revenue.
The total collection on the gasoline tax to $258,838,813. The nation is 2.76% that 10,596,000,000 were used by motor vehicle year. This was an average over 1926 and sumption for each given as 458 gallons.

Dusted worms, one orchard, mould 3.26 per cent, worms 4.39 per cent, shrivel 22.05 per cent, black .24 per cent, light 41.2 per cent, amber 23.26 per cent.
Experiments on 16 trees were as follows:
No treatment, worms 3.5, mould 4.7, shrivel 12.35, blank 1.5, black .76, amber 14.85, white 59.78, tons 36, per lb $0.1258, blows 7.15.

Two treatments, dust, worms 2.52, mould 3.6, shrivel 10.42, blank 1.85, black 1.26, amber 22.05, white 58.07, tons 55.7, per lb $0.1413, blows 5.8.
Three treatments, dust, worms 2.4, mould 1.8, shrivel 3.45, blank 1.92, black .65, amber 20.68, white 70.95, tons 109.5, per lb $0.1456, blows 4.5.
You see from this that in those orchards receiving three treatments for aphis as compared to those receiving no treatment the percentage of shrivee is greatly decreased with a material increase in percentage of white meats; also the price per pound orchard run is two cents more and two percent less blows.
Again it is interesting to note that those orchards receiving one treatment in each case were sprayed for worm and aphis and had the lowest percentage of worms.
We are indebted to the packing house managers for their co-operation in helping us obtain this data.
Harvesting methods, irrigation and other factors may enter in but we believe it is well demonstrated that pest control is a link in the chain walnut growers cannot profitably afford to neglect.
Therefore the horticultural office recommends that walnut growers apply a combination of arsenate of lead and black leaf "40" at the proper time for the first treatment at the rate of 15 pounds of basic arsenate of lead, three pounds of spreader and one pint of nicotine per 300 gallons of water, followed if necessary by dusting for aphis.

REAL VERSUS FAKE
In a day when about every beverage, legal or otherwise, is synthetic, and when the human stomach is being corroded with innumerable concoctions supposed to imitate fruit juices, it is encouraging to dietitians and orchardists alike to know that the University of California is earnestly working to give genuine products entering into such uses a place in the sun. There isn't anything particularly new, of course, about the wor kof Prof. W. W. Cruess of the fruit products division at Berkeley, for he has been studying fruit by-products uses for years—the interesting thing is that he and his helpers are getting results. They say their experiments in the preparation of pure carbonated fruit beverages and pure fruit syrups for soft drink stand and soda fountain sale have definitely shown that there is no excuse whatever, even from cost considerations, for selling the public anything but the real article. Wholesome, delicious fruit drinks to replace the oceans of "artificially flavored and colored" water now consumed annually by the American people can be prepared commercially at an expense low enough to allow of good profit to the grower, manufacturer and dispenser and then sold at reasonable prices to the thirsty, according to Professor Cruess.
The manufacturers of the fake stuff will make it and the fountains will sell it, of course, just as long as customers are willing to swallow it—and pay for it. And the profits in the highly colored bogus fruit juice drinks are, without doubt, about the largest realized in any industry, the principal expense being for the flamboyant advertising that keeps alive the thirst for the various concoctions. The irony of the situation from the orchardit's vineyardist's and small fruit grower's point of view is that the very advertising that brings young and old to the fountains and stands to guzzle artificial fruit juice beverages generally portrays in gor-
important contribution to the total highway revenue.
The total collections the country over on the gasoline tax in 1927 amounted to $258,838,813. The average tax for the nation is 2.76, and it is indicated that 10,596,000,000 gallons of gasoline were used by motor vehicles during the year. This was an increase of 8.3 per cent over 1926, and the average consumption for each motor vehicle is given as 458 gallons.
While the gas tax is providing a large fund for highway development, there is still a long way to go; as it is reported that there are 518,000 miles of roads throughout the country being ministered to by road workers. Only about 70,000 miles of these are designated as really first class, so that there is still a great deal of improvement to be done. However, in addition to the half a million miles of roads that are being cared for, there are about 2,500,000 miles more of highways in the United States that are infrequently traveled, but eventually will call for improvement, so that it is not surprising that road building in the country is second to education in total expenditures.
We don't know much about Italian politics, but we judge that Mussolini may be slipping a little. We noticed in the papers the other day that he has been writing some poetry.
The man who saves money nowadays isn't a miser; he's a wizard.
