Coolidge Proclaims Annual Forest Week Week of April 22 to 28 Fixed By the President President Coolidge has issued a proclamation designating the week of April 22-28 as Forest Week. This is an annual custom, and the Dominion of Canada is observing the same week. The President's proclamation is as follows: "For several years a special week has been set apart for public discussion of our forests and of what must be done to safeguard and restore them. Among the agencies making for progress in this direction, American Forest Week has proved its usefulness, and I am glad to proclaim it again and to announce that Canada is again concurrently observing a similar week. "The rehabilitation of our forests demands first of all that the forest fire evil be suppressed. Many of the forested states, with the co-operation of timberland owners, have undertaken organized protection against forest fires; and in recent years, under the Clarke-McNary law, the federal government has given its support to the movement. This great co-operative enterprise must be extended and strengthened until every forested county in the United States is safeguarded against forest fires. "But we are still far from the goal of complete protection. Every year, on the average, 80,000 fires scourge our woodlands, steadily undermining their vitality. For this bad situation, the blame falls equally on us all. Public agencies rarely provide adequate protection against fire, the timberland owner is too often indifferent to his property, the forest worker is too often neglectful of the future forest, the average citizen is too often careless with fire in the woods. We must all gain such respect for the forest that light brown sugar has a more delicate flavor for candy making than dark brown sugar. Butter is more pleasing in delicately flavored candies than substitutes. Always use butter to grease your candy pans, for the fat used is sure to taste." NOTICE OF ASSESSMENT Anaheim Union Water Company, location of principal place of business, 303 East Center Street, Anaheim, California. Notice is hereby given that at a meeting of the Board of Directors, held on the 6th day of February, 1928, assessment No. 69 of $3.00 per share was levied on the capital stock of the corporation, payable at once to the Secretary of the company at Anaheim, Orange County, California. NOW THEREFORE said notice recorded "But we are still far from the goal of complete protection. Every year, on the average, 80,000 fires scourge our woodlands, steadily undermining their vitality. For this bad situation, the blame falls equally on us all. Public agencies rarely provide adequate protection against fire; the timberland owner is too often indifferent to his property, the forest worker is too often neglectful of the future forest, the average citizen is too often careless with fire in the woods. We must all gain such respect for the forest that its destruction through indifference or carelessness shall be unthinkable. "We cannot permanently abuse our forests with impunity. The soil is the ultimate source of all our wealth and of life itself. One-fourth of our American soil is best suited for forests. Much of this land is already idle. More of it is being made idle by destructive logging and fire. Yet we cannot safely permit our forest land to lie fallow and useless any more than we can permit our farms and factories to lie idle. "To make our vast empire of forest land fully productive of continuous crops of timber will have momentous consequences in our national life. It will give agriculture the advantage of a new and valuable crop. It will afford permanent employment to millions of men in the forest industries. It will provide raw materials for many industries. It will furnish traffic for our railroads. It will maintain foreign and domestic commerce. It will restore our forests as conservers of soil and water, and as givers of health and pleasure to our people. "We already have made a beginning in forest renewal; but the task is stupendous, and we should permit no satisfaction over what has been done to blind us to the magnitude of what remains to be done. "Now, Therefore, I, Calvin Coolidge, President of the United States of America, do hereby designate and set aside as American Forest Week the week beginning April 22 and ending April 28, in this year of 1928. I recommend to the governors of the various states that they also designate this week for special observance by all our people; and that where practicable and not in conflict with law or custom, Arbor Day be observed during the course of the same week. I urge that during that week all citizens and appropriate organizations—including public officials, legislators, business organizations, educators, editors, clergymen, landowners, and others—give thought to the preservation and wise use of our forests, to the end that energetic forest policies will be adopted in all communities. "In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed." Getting Religion Awoke Conscience Score up another victory for "old man conscience." This time it is a man who hunted in California without a license, and after getting religious, decided to salve his conscience by paying a fine that was long overdue. As a result, the Apostolic Faith Mission of San Francisco is to be enriched in the amount of $10. In December, 1926, Joe Hunter, then chief of patrol for the fish and game commission, received a letter from a man in Oregon. This man admitted that he had hunted in California without first securing the necessary license. He declared he had nursed this a long time, but after getting religion at San Francisco, decided his conscience must be obeyed, and he wanted to know what to do to square things. Hunter advised him that as his offense was outlawed, a nice thing would be for him to send a money order for the minimum fine for hunting without a license to the commission with instructions to donate the amount to some worthy charity. Under date of February 1, comes another letter, and attached thereto a check for $10. The one time game law violator apologized for the long delay, and instructs the commission to give the check to the Apostolic Faith Mission of San Francisco, explaining his request in these words: "As they are the people that told me the way to get saved and keep saved. Hoping this will meet with your approval and show my good faith." Needless to say, the man's conscience fund check was turned over the mission, and he has been advised that he has made good in the way suggested, to "take." At least this man should be a good fish and game conservationist after this demonstration of his faith in our efforts to protect California's wild life," Eugene D. Bennett, executive officer and attorney for the division of fish and game, remarked, after reading the Oregon letter.
