Fighting Disease Among Children
More Than a Thousand Inoculated in Past Month
Dr. K. H. Sutherland, county health officer, has issued the following statement showing the activities of the antidisease workers during the past 30 days:
"During the month of January, the county health department continued its participation in the nation-wide program to secure a more general immunity against diphtheria by the increased use of toxin-antitoxin. One thousand one hundred and ninety-seven children in the towns of Santa Ana, Orange, Anaheim, and Garden Grove were immunized during the month. This number swells the percentage of immune to 90 per cent in some schools, and the department feels that a foundation is laid for a markedly lower incidence of diphtheria in these localities."
"Scientific study has perhaps accomplished more in the control of diphtheria than it has in the case of any other of the contagious maladies. Antitoxin, introduced a number of years ago, has reduced the mortality from diphtheria from about 30 per cent to almost nil, where the anti-toxin is administered early enough and in sufficient quantities. While it is good to rescue a person from serious illness by means of a recognized remedy, it is better to prevent him from acquiring the disease. In the case of diphtheria this can be accomplished by the use of toxin-antitoxin. For several years past, under the increasing use of toxin-antitoxin, the incidence of diphtheria has diminished, but in 1927 a virulent type of diphtheria appeared, which increased the number of cases somewhat and the death rate markedly. Hence, there has been a renewed effort over the whole country to secure a more comprehensive immunity to diphtheria by general use of toxin-antitoxin."

LOCAL BREVITIES
F. A. Yungbluth, president of the Chamber of Commerce, and Secretary George W. Reid attended the annual banquet of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce at the Ambassador-hotel on Wednesday evening. More than a thousand people were present, and the meeting was the most interesting ever held by the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce.
M. F. Reagan, of Los Alamitos, who died February 6, left an estate valued at $126,000, according to a petition for probating his will, which was filed Tuesday. A large part of the property consists of real estate in Orange county. The will-was made August 12, 1927, according to the petition filed by the First National Bank of Anaheim. The majority-of the heirs, according to the will, reside in the east and southwest. Leonard Evans is attorney for the petitioner.
Movie fans who had hoped to get a closeup of Fritz Field and Rudolph Schildkraut, DeMille studio actors, when they appeared in court in Santa Ana to answer to a charge of speeding 59 miles an hour near the county hospital, were doomed to disappointment, for the case was transferred to the Orange justice court and instead of a jail sentence, a fine of $75 was meted out. Field, who was driving, asked for a change of venue through the Auto Club of Southern California to Judge Angle's court and the request was granted as the offense took place in the orange justice court district. Schildkraut, who accompanied Field at the time of the arrest, was expected to accompany Field to this county, but neither appeared when the case was called in Orange and the fine was paid by W. D. Payne, club attorney.

$20,000 Equipment in New Service Station
The new service station, known as Shep's Service, located at the corner of Los Angeles and Broadway, has four visible gasoline pumps and other extensive facilities, including a hydraulic lift for car greasing, and battery and tire departments. It is said the investment represents a total of $20,000.
Shepley comes to Anaheim from San Diego, where he resided for 19 years and where for the past 14 years he has been actively engaged in operating automobile service stations. In addition to the station here, he also owns a service in Garden Grove.
The station will give motorists 24-hour service. Shepley being assisted during the day by Marion Umpress, formerly of Garden Grove, and the night shift will be in charge of Dallas Manning, an Anaheim resident, and for several years connected with various service stations here.
The new station's pumps will serve Associated gasoline, one pump being devoted exclusively to Associated Ethyl. Cycoil motor oils will be handled, and also a full line of Western and Eastern oils will be carried.
The greasing department includes one of the latest type hydraulic lifts, and this together with complete Alemite equipment will be placed in the hands of an expert employee. As Shep explains, proper greasing is important, and he intends to render the best service possible in all departments.
