Bank Figures Show California’s Wealth
More Than Seven of Each Ten People Have Money Deposited
More than seven out of each ten people in California have money on deposit in either state or national banks, according to a statement issued by Will C. Wood, state superintendent of banks. This means that we actually have more bank accounts than we have adult population.
A conservative estimate of California's population places it at 4,950,000 at the present time. There were 3,069,464 separate savings accounts in California banks in June of this year. Total deposits in these accounts amounted to $1,698,729,000; thus there were more than six savings accounts for every ten people in the state.
There was an estimated total of 1,700,315 commercial checking accounts carrying $1,000,3778,000 for the same time. This indicates that more than three out of each ten people in California carry commercial accounts.
The total number of accounts of individuals in June, 1927, both savings and commercial, was 4,769,779, totaling $2,699,107,000. In addition to this, there was on deposit in California banks approximately $300,000,000 in the form of accounts of counties, municipalities, the United States, postal savings, cashiers checks, certified checks, etc.
But as regards accounts of individuals, we find that there are almost as many separate accounts as there are people in the state. However, we must allow for duplication in the case of people who have both commercial and savings accounts.
'Rube’ Ellis’ Team Meets Roscoe Stars
Next Sunday afternoon at the county fair grounds, on the state highway between Anaheim and Santa Ana, the Orange County baseball team, under the management of that most popular veteran ball players, George "Rube" Ellis, will entertain the great colored team recently organized and known as Roscoe's All Stars of Los Angeles.
"Rube" has gathered together a bunch of hustling young ball players, who have already earned the spangles of the real ball player and who will be heard from in the next few years, which is giving Orange county fans some real baseball. The colored team is composed of players who would be wearing major league uniforms if it were not for the color line.
The leading baseball boosters of Orange county met at a dinner at the fair grounds, Monday evening, to lend their aid in putting over the present project of winter baseball and also to pave the way for the Portland Coast League Club during training season. Ernie Johnson, manager of the Portland club, is a Laguna Beach resident during the off season. When the Portland team trains at the fair grounds, Orange county fans will see such clubs as the Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago Cubs and other eastern clubs in action.
Sunday's game promises to be very interesting. Those sponsoring better baseball for Orange county are asking that the fans give "Rube" Ellis and his team the support of their presence.
All Boy Scouts in uniform will be admitted free at Sunday's game and will be guests of the Orange county club.

State Banks Show Increased Assets
San Francisco Shows Decline In Savings Accounts
State banks have maintained the strong position which they held on June 30, 1927, according to figures released today by Will C. Wood, state superintendent of banks.
Greatest progress has been made by the commercial banks, where total assets have increased from $620,130-143.77 on June 30 to $636,855,937.66 on October 10, a gain of $15,725,793.69; and gross deposits from $467,950,820.70 to $475,781,954.34—again of $7,331,133.64.
The greatest portion of these gains was made by the banks outside of the large cities, indicating that financial conditions in the agricultural districts are improving.
Savings banks show a slight decline in both total assets and total deposits. The falling off was limited to San Francisco alone, and substantial progress was made elsewhere.
Superintendent Wood is of the opinion that the decline of savings deposits in San Francisco is due almost entirely to withdrawals by people who are using their savings to invest in the securities market, which has shown unprecedented activity. There is no reason to believe that the rate of savings has declined; the money is going into stocks and bonds instead of into the savings account.
Superintendent Wood expressed entire satisfaction with present conditions, pointing out that the increase in assets for the state system as a whole was accompanied by a slight decline in loans and bank borrowings, thus reflecting greater liquidity.

The ceremony was performed at St. Boniface Catholic church, at a nuptial mass solemnized by Rev. Father Patrick Browne, pastor of the church. A quantity of beautiful flowers, ferns and potted plants were used in the decorations.
Miss Geraldine Dolan and Misses Rose and Elizabeth Donnelly played the bridal chorus from Lohengrin as the bridal party entered, and Mendelssohn's wedding march as the recessional. Placentia orange and lemon shipments over the Santa Fe since last January total 1876 cars. While most of Placentia's fruit goes to markets by rail, a large amount goes by truck, to Los Angeles and to the harbor for shipment by boat. Nearly all of the Valencia oranges have been shipped. A small quantity of off bloom fruit remains to be trucked to Los Angeles and other nearby markets. Placentia lemons brought good returns this year, according to packing houses.
La Habra shipped 75 cases of tomatoes this season. The shipments would have been double this figure, but the heavy rain storm a month ago ruined the crop still in the fields.
