Farm Land Values On Upward Trend
Prices in Western Agricultural Belt From $50 to $250 Acre
The consensus of opinion of the secretary-treasurers of the National Farm Loan Associations of Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota and Wyoming, reporting on prices of farms in their territories, is that the bottom has been reached and that there is an actual increase compared with a year ago.
This was brought out in reports made to the Federal Land Bank of Omaha recently during the meeting of these officials here. Not only did they believe that prices were higher, but they indicated a more active market than for several years past. A few stated that they had requests for farms in their vicinity which they could not fill, a condition of the real estate market which they had not enjoyed for several years.
The sale of land, almost without exception, is being made to farmers living near it who are familiar with the farms and their probable financial returns. Fewer foreclosures than a year ago were recorded and more bona fide sales are made to farmers and others who are confident that the purchase of farms at current values are "good buys." Nothing like a boom in farm lands was indicated, but a gratifying increase in selling price and a more active market was almost universally reported.
Almost without exception, secretary-treasurers from Iowa reported a more active market for farm lands in their territory and an increase in sale values compared with a year ago. Those who did not report an actual increase in prices indicated their belief that the bottom had been reached in the farm real estate market and sales from now on would be at a higher level.

THINGS WORTH KNOWING
Q. To whom was the contract for the building of the Coolidge dam let?
A. It was let by the United States Indian office to the Atkinson-Spicer Company, Los Angeles.
Q. Can fish breathe out of water?
A. True fish breathe by means of gills. Water is passed through the gill openings and oxygen from the water is extracted in the process. The water mammals, such as whales, seals, etc., breathe like other mammals on land.
In Colorado, Utah, the Dakotas, Michigan, and other states which might be named, sugar corporations exist, but only as refiners and marketers. The sugar beet itself, however, is produced by individual farmers, and the seizure of the market by low-priced cane sugar (which would be inevitable if the tariff were affected) would mean that this group of American farmers (and it is a very considerable group) would be absolutely eliminated, and their fields would become simply idle acres. Here is one of the many cases that is self evident to all where the tariff alone stands as a bar between penury, poverty and failure, and their ability to make a decent American life for their families.

Brimming over with the best of harmless fun—an amusing and always entertaining film feature—is the verdict of critics who have seen "She's My Baby" in previews, and which is being shown at the United Theatre for four days.
This Sterling production, directed by the well-known Fred Windemere, stars a number of noted screen players, notably Robert Agnew, Kathleen Myers, Mildred Harris and Earle Williams. The advent of "She's My Baby" is of particular importance at this time, since it marks one of the milestones in the motion picture industry's sincere efforts to produce always-entertaining pictures for the public.
Swift, crushing laughter permeates this high comedy, and it is so typically American as to bring the lighter side of our national character with an amazing fidelity to truth. The story concerns the domestic troubles of a typical American middle-class home, with the father and mother seeking a little relief from the monotony of twenty years of married life by becoming entangled in laughable alliances with outsiders. That there is a flapper female daughter who infuses this new blood into her parents goes without saying... A delightful film tid-bit!
The raw life of the lumber camps in California is the story basis of "A Gentleman Roughneck," in which Frank Merrill is appearing at the United Theatre Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 17, 18, and 19.
The story is of such vigorous, rough and tumble nature, requiring a location of such a character, that it was necessary to go into the heart of California's biggest forest to find it. In filming "A Gentleman Roughneck," a great sawmill with its awe inspiring machinery is used. These shots are of intense interest, giving the film an atmospheric quality that well repays the trouble and great expense of sending the large company to an almost inaccessible place.
In this latest picture many famous actors appear, including Virginia Warwick; Jack Richardson, William Conklin, Murdock MacQuarrie, William Hays and Eddie Boland. Each of these players stand at the very top of their various specializations.
"A Gentleman Roughneck" will be shown at the United Theatre Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 17, 18, and 19.

Bert Lytell, the popular exponent of mystery roles on the screen, has what he believes is the best example of this type of part in "Alias the Lone Wolf," Louis Joseph Vance's thrilling mystery story adapted for the screen by Columbia Pictures. In this production Lytell again impersonates the famous Lone Wolf character, Michael Lanyard, which he created on the screen ten years ago.
The latest expo loits of the well-known Lone Wolf promise thrills galore as well as romance, in a strange story of intrigue, with most of the action taking place on a real ocean liner. The denouement is said to be even more startling than in the previous stories.
Edward H. Griffith directed this Columbia production with a notable cast surrounding the star. Lois Wilson, of "The Covered Wagon" fame, plays opposite Lytell.
"Alias the Lone Wolf" will be shown at the United Theatre Sunday, November 20, both matinee and evening.
THE SUGAR BEET FARMER
The campaign to protect the tariff rights of the American sugar beet growers should be one of the most interesting of all such campaigns to the American people. The sugar beet industry in America exists largely by reason of its tariff protection. The sugar beet farmer, living on the American standard, and paying the American wage scale, to such help as he employs is constantly battling against the large acreage, corporation-owned Cuban cane sugar producers who have at hand an inexhaustible supply of cheap peon labor which can be herded, corralled and harassed into intensive activity.

Q—What is the largest exclusively woman's college in the United States?
A—Hunter college, whose enrollment for 1926-27 was 3448. Smith is second with 2085.
Q—Who sponsored the law that prohibits transportation of prize flight films in interstate commerce?
A—The law was passed two years after the fight for the heavyweight championship between Jack Johnson (colored) and Jim Jeffries. The showing of the moving pictures of that fight prompted the passage of the law. It was believed that the pictures were directly responsible for inciting a number of race riots which broke out in various parts of the country following the fight.
Q—How does the Manx cat differ from other breeds?
A—As a rule they are tailless and the hind quarters are decidedly elevated. A white Manx cat is almost unknown, and pure black ones are exceedingly rare.
